MALIN KUNDANG

Once upon a time, in a remote village there was a family of fishermen on the coast of

West Sumatra. Due to the poor financial condition of the family, the father decided to make a

living overseas by crossing the vast ocean.

Father: Mom, Dad wants to wander across the country.

Mother : (Mother surprised) Why do you want to wander?

Father: Because i can't let our financial condition continue like this. , where it is very possible to

make money because there are many jobs in various fields. For example, the harbor has ships,

and ship warehouses.

Mother : But father… (anxious)

Father: Can't help it, the only way my father can do is to wander across the country to earn a lot

of money.

Mother: Alright, if that's what's best for all of us. Where is it?

Father: From home we have to go to the harbor to get on the ship, after arriving at the port of the

other country. Look for the building to the right of the Harbor with a wooden fence in front of it.

Mother: how does the appearance of a boss in a foreign country really look like?

Father : The person is male, tall and big. Has slightly dark skin and has a sharp nose.

The housband said goodbye to her wife. (In front of the house)

Father: Mom, dad went wandering yes. Take good care of yourself and our son Malin. If I had

earned a lot of money, I would come back here again.

Mother: (with a resigned face) okay, I'll wait for you here until you come home. Be careful, don't

forget me and your child.

The father left by boat. Arriving at the other side of the country, he immediately met his boss .

Father : Good morning sir. Introducing my new employee here.

Boss : Morning too. Alright introduce yourself now.

Father : My name is Salim, I am 45 years old. I come from a foreign country.

Boss : How was your daily life before?

Father: My daily life before was fishing and raising chickens for sale.

Boss : Well then, if you work here you will be paid 2000 cents. Do you agree or not?

Father: OK, sir, I agree.

Boss: OK, I'll read the rules at work. Namely: must arrive on time, always prioritize safety, wear

polite clothes.

Father: ok sir ready.

Malin's father never returned to his hometown so his mother had to replace Malin's father to

make a living. Malin is considered a smart kid but a bit mischievous. He often chases chickens

and beats them with a broom. One day when Malin was chasing chickens, he tripped over a rock

and injured his right arm hit by a rock. The wound became a scar on his arm and could not be

lost. Because he felt sorry for his mother who worked hard to earn a living to raise herself. Malin

decided to go wander in order to become rich after returning to his hometown someday.
Malin : Mom, I want to wander.

Mother: Why do you want to wander, son? Mother's advice, you should just accompany your

mother here. Let it be. My father just migrated to the other side of the country.

Malin : I also want to be like father, mother. I feel sorry for my mother, who has to toil every day

to make a living. I want to make a living for us mom

Mother : Malin, okay mother will allow you to wander if you want it. Don't forget your mother,

Malin. Mother will always wait for you here until you come back here. Don't forget to bring

thick clothes because it's cold there and also bring a big black bag that is on top of the wardrobe.

Malin : Fine mom, I'll come back here again. (While carrying things)

Malin went wandering by boarding a merchant's ship. While on the ship, Malin Kundang learned

a lot about seamanship from experienced crew members .

Malin : (While looking around) There seems to be a village there. Maybe I can find a job there.

Malin Kundang headed to the village closest to the beach. The village where Malin anchored was

a very fertile village. With his tenacity and persistence at work, Malin gradually succeeded in

becoming a very wealthy man. He had many merchant ships with more than 100 crew members.

After becoming very rich, Malin Kundang proposed to a girl to be his wife.News of Malin

Kundang who had become wealthy and married reached Malin Kundang's mother. When mother

was sweeping on the terrace.

Neighbor : Mom, mom, (calling while meeting Malin's mother)

Mother: Yes sir, what's wrong?

Neighbor : Do you already know that Malin, your son, is married?

Mother: (smiles in surprise) Really?! Thankfully, he finally found his heart's desire. I pray that

he will always be happy with his wife.

Malin Kundang's mother felt grateful and very happy that her son had succeeded. Since then,

Malin's mother went to the pier every day, waiting for her son to return to his hometown. After a

long marriage, Malin and his wife made a voyage accompanied by many crew members and

bodyguards. Malin's mother who saw the arrival of the ship to the dock saw two people standing

on the deck of the ship. He was sure that what was standing was his son, Malin Kundaang and

his wife.

Mother : Is that Malin my son? Is he with his wife? (Holds chest while thinking about what he

saw)

Mother : Malin... Is it true that you are Malin, where have you been malin. I miss you, you are

now a rich merchant, aren't you?

But seeing an old woman who was dressed shabby and dirty hugging him, Malin Kundang

became angry even though he knew that the old woman was his mother, because he was

embarrassed when this was known by his wife

Malin : Who are you? I'm not your son. I am a very rich person, I can't have a mother like you.

I'm disgusted to see you! My mother died long ago!

Mother : (Teary) Malin...

Neighbor: Malin! You don't just talk, this is your mother. Mother who always takes care of you.

Why do you not easily remember your own mother?! (furious)

Malin : I already told you before, that my mother died a long time ago. So she don't claim to be

my mother.

Malin's wife: my husband, is it true that the old woman is your mother?

Malin : Not my wife, she is not my mother. You believe me. When I lie to you

Malin's wife: But, why do I feel sure that you are my husband's mother.

Malin : Trust me my wife.

Neighbor : Mom, what are the characteristics of your child that can prove that he is your child?

Mother : (With confidence) Malin has a birthmark on his right arm.

Neighbor : Now you show me your right arm? If it's true that you have a birthmark on your right

arm, it means you are truly this mother's child. Now show me your right arm.

Malin : All right. (When he looked at his arm, it was true that there was a birthmark on his left

arm. It meant that he was the mother's child)

Neighbor: So then it's clear to everyone that you are this mother's child

Malin : No way. This is definitely an impossibility. Did you guys use magic to make this mark

on my arm.

Neighbor: You can't avoid it anymore son. You are Malin, this mother's biological child.

Malin : I do not believe it. Come on escort, we're sailing again. Come on my wife, let's get out of

here.
Bodyguard: Yes sir. (while looking down slightly)

Malin's wife: Wait! (snaps) I'm sure now that you are this mother's son. I don't like having a

husband who is disobedient to his mother.

Malin : What did you say? Fine, if you don't want to go with me, I'll go sailing alone.

Getting treated like that from his son, Malin Kundang's mother was very angry. He did not

expect his son to be a rebellious child. Because of her mounting anger, Malin's mother cursed her

son.

Mother : All right. I thought that when you became rich you would remember your mother, but

you didn't. If you do not recognize me as your mother, I will curse you to stone.

Malin : Whatever you say!

True, when Malin turned around to die at that place, the mother's prayer was granted and finally

Malin turned to stone. Everyone was immediately shocked to see what happened.

The message that we can take from Malin Kundang's story is never to be disobedient to parents,

especially a mother, because a mother has conceived, given birth and cared for us, and the prayer

of a mother is an extraordinary prayer.
