TOPICS
1. Types of L.I.S.

2. Concept of L.I.S planning and feasibility.

3. Important Parameters in L.I.S.

4. Finalisation of parameters of L.I.S.

5. Major components of L.I.S.

6. Design of Various components of L.I.S.

7. Important Govt. GR / Circulars.

3
WHAT IS L.I.S. :-
 A Mechanical arrangement provided to irrigate the
area which is at higher level than the water source.
 History : After drought in 1972, Maharashtra Irrigation
Development Commission (IDCOM) was established
to facilitate financial support to Lift schemes. Water
users co-operative society will be formed to bear the
electricity charges and water cess.
 Later on Govt.of Maharashtra under took small L.I.
schemes in trible and hilly areas.
 In Western Maharashtra lots of K.T.Weir were
constructed and due to facility of releasing water from
U/s dam several co-operative L.I.S. are established.
 Success of these Schemes lies in sowing of cash crops,
sugar cane, vegetables, fruits etc.
 Vishnupuri Lift Irrigation Scheme in Nanded Dist. is
the first major L.I.Scheme administratively
approved in 1979 in the state.
TYPES OF L.I.S. :-
 (1) According to Ownership :-
a) Government L.I.S. Schemes.
b) Co-Operative L.I.S. Schemes.
c) Private L.I.S. Schemes

(2) According to Command Area :-

a) Large L.I.S. (More than 10,000 Ha. Area)
b) Medium L.I.S. ( above 2,000 Ha.& upto 10,000
Ha.Area )
c) Small L.I.S. ( upto 2,000 Ha.Area)
TYPES OF L.I.S. :-
 According to Head :-
a) Low Head ( Lifting head up to 10 meter.)
b) Medium Head (above 10 meters & upto 40 meter)
c) High Head (above 40 meters)

According to Stages :-
a) Single Stage :- Water is lifted in single stage.
b) Multi stage :- Water is lifted in more than one
stage.
According to Way of Pumping :-
a) Series pumping :- Discharge remains same
head goes on adding. Also called as inline pumping
system. Pumps are frequntely operated in series to
supply grater head than individual pumps

b) Parallel pumping :- Here discharges get added

head remains same. Multiple pumps are run

parallely and connected one common header

(Raising main).
 CONCEPT OF L.I.S. PLANNING :
 L.I.S. should be technically feasible, economically
viable, socially accepted and environmentally
sustainable.
 Croping pattern should be appropriate and realistic.
 Height of Lifting
 Distribution system.
 Economical feasibility.
 Design discharge of the scheme
 No.of lifting stages & No.of Rows of Raising Mains.
 Beneficiaries involvement
 Planning of Construction.
FEASIBILITY OF L.I.S. :-
 Before taking any LIS scheme the following criteria's
should be checked
 Availability of required electric load from M.S.E.D.C.L.
consent should be taken.
 Govt. GR dt 23/11/2016 gives the guide lines where LIS
can be taken.
 Draught prone areas (declared by Govt) .
 Tribal areas (declared by Govt) .
 Hilly areas (declared by Govt) .
 Where annual rainfall is less than 15 inch.
Contd…….
 Where it is necessary to lift and utilise the allocated
water awarded by the interstate tribunal
 For the rehabilitation of project affected peoples.
 Atleast one of the above condition should be fullfilled.
 Prior approval to the scheme from the Chief Minister
is necessary.
 The minor LIS will be taken in hand at the cost of
Govt. of Maharashtra in tribal area where
 No alternative is available.
 Written demand by the beneficires.
 Water availability is ensured .
 Identification of command area & cropping pattern.
 Calculation of discharge for rising main which will be
70% of the peak discharge required.
 Calculations of H.P. required for the project.
 Calculation of diameter & rows of rising main & No. of
Pumps, size of pump house etc.

DISCHARGE (Q)
Discharge is calculated as per Govt. circular dt.6.7.2009.
• Total net crop water requirement at root zone in Mm3 per 1000 Ha.
for peak fortnight as per modified penman method = X
• Conveyance efficiency of project = 70%
• Field application efficiency = 70%
• Overall efficiency of the project = 0.7 x 0.7= 0.49 Say= 50%
• Discharge required for 1000 Ha considering 12 days on and 2 days
off.

X * 106
= =1.929 * X m3/Sec
12 x 24 x 60 x 60 x 0.5
• Designed discharge
= 0.70 * 1.929 * X
= 1.3503 * X m3/Sec. / 1000 Ha.

16
PUMPING CAPACITY

To be worked out with respective to Gross Head of pumping.

• Gross Head for pumping = H = Static head for pumps +

Frictional loss in rising main + losses in bend.

• Total H. P. Required = w Q H /75 X η

w = Density of water (1000 Kg /m3)

Q = Discharge ( m3 /sec)

H = Gross Head (m) for pumping.

η = Efficiency of pump

17

TECHNIQUES ADOPTED FOR DESIGN
All design procedure has been formulated, standardized and
made available to the designers (i.e. S.D.E., A.E.-II, Sectional
Engineer ) as printed manual. Since the procedures /
responsibilities has been documented, uniformity in the
design is achieved.
USE OF SOFTWARES
• STAAD – PRO
Internationally accepted 'STAAD_PRO' software is used for the
analysis of frame structure of power house / pump house. Due
to this, 3 dimensional analysis in a short time can be done
owing to speedy and economical solutions of the problem. The
limit state method of design is adopted for the structural
design of R.C.C. components
• SAP 2 & PIPE 2010 USED FOR SURGE ANALYSIS OF L. I. S.
56
IN HOUSE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Computer programs developed in advanced Excel by

Engineers of this wing as listed below

• Design of retaining wall.

• Optimization study for economical diameter and thickness of rising
main
• Design of saddle support on rising main.
• Design of Anchor & Thrust block on rising main
• Design of R.C.C. slab.
• Design of Isolated footing for columns carrying axial load and biaxial
moment.
