After studying this unit you should be able to:

• Understand nouns
• Identify and explain the types of nouns
NOUNS

Nouns are words which name people, places, things, animals or ideas. Examples:
pencil, Mr. Nandy, sparrow, London, freedom, mathematics, and etc.
There are two basic kinds of nouns:
a) Common
b) Proper

A common nouns names a general person, place, thing, or idea. It does not refer
to something specific. Example: shoe, cat, house, etc
A proper nouns names a specific person, place, thing, or idea. It refers to a NAME
of a noun. For example, Felix, Nike, White House, April, Malaysia, etc
Other Types of Nouns

Abstract Noun
• Abstract nouns represent qualities and feelings. We cannot see,
hear, taste, smell, or touch the things that abstract nouns
represents.
• For example:
✔ Truth
✔ honor
✔ Beauty
✔ sickness
Concrete Noun
• These nouns refer to objects that exist in the physical
form which you can see, hear, touch, taste or smell.
• A few examples include:
✔ children
✔ Sydney
✔ tables
✔ apples
Singular Nouns & Plural Nouns

Nouns can be SINGULAR (only one)…


• The baby held up one foot and one hand.

…or PLURAL(more than one)


• Babies have two feet and two hands.

We usually add "s" to a singular noun to make it PLURAL:


• hand – hands

But some nouns follow different rules, for example:


• baby – babies, foot – feet, wolf – wolves, mouse - mice
Countable Nouns & Uncountable Nouns

Countable Noun is noun that can be counted. It can have shape or no shape.
Shape : dog, chair, apples, door, student
No shape : Day, Month, Year, Journey

Uncountable Noun is noun that cannot be counted.


Thing : milk, sugar, salt
Emotion : anger, happiness, knowledge
Language : English, Tamil, Hindi
Subject : Mathematics, Biology, Physics
Activity : swimming, eating
Other : news, money, weather, education, breakfast, traffic, permission
Collective Noun
A collective noun is noun that use to name something that form in group or
in collection.
Structure :
Collective noun + of + common noun
Example :
• A herd of cattle
• An army of soldiers
• A pack of wolves
• A medley of songs
• A bouquet of flowers
• A deck of cards
Compound Noun
Compound nouns are formed by putting together two or
more words.
• Noun + Noun = Bed + Room = Bedroom
• Verb + Noun = Swimming + Pool = Swimming Pool
• Noun + Verb = Hair + Cut = Haircut
• Preposition + Noun = Under + Ground = Underground
Possessive Noun
1. Possessive nouns are used to show possession (owning, or having).
2. An apostrophe (’) is used to show the ownership.
✔ Possessive form of singular noun is made by putting and apostrophe s (’s) after
the noun
Fluffy => Fluffy’s tail
the man => the man’s hat
✔ Possessive form of plural noun is made by adding an apostrophe if the noun
ends in s (’) but if the plural noun does not end in s, then we need to add
apostrophe s (’s)
runners => runners’ shoes
the boys => the boys’ shoes
teeth => teeth’s fillings
the children => the children’s toys
