Short Circuit Calculation Guide

This document describes how to calculate short circuit levels using per unit impedances. It provides the equations to convert old impedance values to new values based on changes to MVA base and source impedance. An example is shown calculating the fault current for a 6.6kV bus and 400V bus by summing the impedance contributions and inverting to find the short circuit MVA and current.

Z = 0.2 + 0.667 = 0.867 p.u.

S 115.34 MVA
I f 1= = =10 kA
√ 3× V √ 3 ×6.6 kV

For fault occurring on 400 V Bus (f2):


Z = 0.2 + 0.667 + 5 = 5.867 p.u.
MVA base 100 MVA
SC level= = =17 MVA
Z source 5 .867
S 17 MVA
I f 2= = =24.5 kA
√ 3× V √3 × 400 V
