Present Simple
• Form: She/He is a student. They/You we are late. I am happy.
Subject + Verb to be + noun/adjective/adverb

• Use: The principal use of the simple present is to refer to an action or event that takes
place habitually, but with the verb "to be" the simple present tense also refers to a present
or general state:

• Ex: She is helpful.

• I am 20 years old.

 Second type:
Form: He/she/it works. I work. They work
Ex: He does not work. They don’t work.

Simple Use: we use the present simple tense to:
• Give information about permanent activities:
Ex: Sam lives in Erbil.
My sister works in a bank.
 Describe a state that does not change:
Ex: She looks like her mother.
Present Talk about routine activities, repeated actions of
Simple Cont. habits:
Ex: I often travel abroad on vacation.

Present Continuous (Progress)
Form: I am going. He/She/it is going. They/you/we are going
Ex: I am not going (Negative)
Am I going? (Interrogative)

Use: We use the present continuous to:

1. Describe activities in progress at the moment of speaking
Ex: She is talking to him on the phone right now.

2. Actions that are happening “around now”.

Ex: I am reading a book at the moment. (means in the middle of reading it)
Present Simple Continuous
3. Describe temporary situations:
Ex: The delegation is staying at the Hilton until Friday.

4. Refer to future arrangements:

Ex: He is starting a new job next week.

5. Describe changing situation gradually:

Ex: People are working longer hours nowadays. .
