required to ensure timely completion of a project.

Activity Definition
Project schedules grow out of the basic document that
initiate a project
Project charter includes start and end dates and budget
information
Scope statement and WBS help define what will be done

Decomposition: a technique used for dividing and
subdividing the project scope and project deliverables
into smaller, more manageable parts. Deliverable:
activity list.

Arrow Diagramming Method
(ADM)
Also called activity-on-arrow (AOA) project network
diagrams
Activities are represented by arrows
Nodes or circles are the starting and ending points of
activities
Can only show finish-to-start dependencies

Task Dependency Types
Finish-to-Start (FS): the successor activity cannot start until a
predecessor activity has finished.
Example: The awarding ceremony cannot start until the race
has finished.
Finish-to-Finish (FF): the successor activity cannot finish
until a predecessor activity has finished.
Example: Writing a document (predecessor) is required to be
finished before editing (successor) the document can finish.
Start-to-Start (SS): Successor activity cannot start until the
predecessor activity has started.
Example: feeding raw materials to the production phase.
(feeding shouldn’t stop to start the production)
Start-to-Finish (SF): Successor activity cannot finish until a
predecessor

Activity Duration Estimating
After defining activities and determining their
sequence, the next step in time management is
duration estimating
Duration includes the actual amount of time
worked on an activity plus elapsed time
Effort is the number of workdays or work hours
required to complete a task. Effort does not equal
duration
People doing the work should help create estimates,
and an expert should review them

predict total project duration
