Title: Measurement of different parameters of RC load on DC power supply.

Objectives

Students are expected to learn about the Measurement of current, voltages and power of RC load on
DC power supply.
To understand the schematic diagram corresponding to the measurement of the RC load.

Parallel RC Circuit:
In a parallel R-C circuit a pure resistor having resistance R in ohms and a pure capacitor of capacitance
C in Farads are connected in parallel.

Parallel RC load.

Voltage drops in a parallel RC circuit are the same hence the applied voltage is equal to the voltage
across the resistor and voltage across the capacitor. Current in a parallel R-C circuit is the sum of the
current through the resistor and capacitor.

V = V_R = V_C
I = I_R + I_C

For the resistor, current through it given by ohm’s law:

I_R = Vin/R

The voltage-current relationship for the capacitor is:

I_C = C*dVin/dt

Applying KCL (Kirchhoff’s Current Law) to parallel R-C circuit

I_R + I_C = 0

v/R +C*dV/dt = 0

Connections for single phase loads:

Procedure:
1. Connect the RC loads in parallel.
2. Supply the variable DC voltages.
3. Fixed the DC voltages on 100v to 150v for your experiment.
4. Fixed the R load and vary the C load and note the changes in current and find the
power on each value.
5. Fixed the C load and vary the R load and note the changes in current and find the
power on each value.
6. Discuss the changes you noted by changing in the loads.

1 2 2 108 0.19 20.52
2 3 2 108 0.29 31.32
3 4 2 108 0.38 41.04
4 5 2 108 0.48 51.84
5 6 2 108 0.57 61.56

Conclusion:

In this lab we learn about the different measurement of RC load on DC power

supply . We have seen that when the value of resister is fixed and the value of the capacitor is
variable there is no effect on power and current because in DC condition capacitor act as an open
circuit . but when we change the value of resistor and capacitor same the values of power and
current also changes.
