1.

What evidence was there that the parents of Bruno were "protecting" him from the
realities of the Holocaust? Can the same be said of Shmuel (the boy in the striped
pajamas)? Explain.
The father mentions that his work is to make this world a better place to live in for Bruno and for the
country. Therefore, he is trying to protect Bruno from the dangers of the outside world at this time
(Holocaust). Another piece of evidence provided is that the mother saw Bruno sitting Pavel after
Bruno scratched his knee , so she told him to go up to his room. This would protect him from any
news about the holocaust, as his parents think he is too young to find out this critical information
about harming innocent people (jews) for the sake of the country. No the same thing isn’t said about
Shmuel because no one was there to protect him and he was left there being treated badly.

2. What evidence is there that the Death Camps were not widely known about (by regular
German citizens).
Smoke was emitted from the chimneys and was creating a bad smell. The soldier tells Bruno's mom
that they smell worse when they are burnt. He was referring to the jews. However, the mother did not
know this fact, which proves that there are still many things about death camps that aren’t known.

3. Describe the education that Bruno and his sister were getting from the tutor. What
impact did the education have on the children, particularly Bruno's sister?
The education provided by the tutor to the children was all based on history and how the jews are the
problem and are bad people. This impacted Bruno by making him want to know the whole truth
especially after his friendship with Shmuel. His sister started becoming more aggressive and started
believing that the Jews are the issue. She has the idea that if she starts believing in this stuff it will
make her seem older.

4. Describe the change in attitude of Bruno's Mother throughout the film. Why did she
change?
She started feeling sorry for the Jews and became kinder towards them as she knew that they
weren’t the ones to blame and wasn’t able to see them get burned and killed for absolutely no
reason.

5. How did shielding Bruno (from the truth) affect Bruno in the end?
It made him want to help the Jews which meant he risked his life just so he could help a friend find
his father. It ended up with him dying at the end because of the actions of the Germans who followed
Hitler.
