In the preparation of distance-learning modules and online-accessible


lessons for our students during the CoViD-19 pandemic, the faculty members of
Northern Christian College (NCC) included some copyrighted material, the use

PROFESSION - an organization of an occupational group based on the


application of special knowledge which establishes is own rules
and standards for the protection of the public and the
professionals.
- an occupation that requires extensive education or a calling that
requires special knowledge, skill and preparation.

Professionalism - professional character, spirit or methods, set of


attributes, way of life that implies responsibility and commitment.

Professionalization - process of becoming professional, acquiring


characteristics considered to be professional.

CRITERIA OF A PROFESSION
1. Specialized Education-
2. Body of knowledge - well-defined body of knowledge; has conceptual
framework that contributes to the knowledge base of nursing, gives
direction to practice, education and research.
3. Service orientation- altruism (selfless concern for other) hallmark of
nursing.
4. On-going research - nursing research is already a dimension in nurses.
5. Code of Ethics - Nursing profession requires integrity of its members -
do what is right
6. Autonomy - Nursing regulates itself and set standards for its members
Nurses’ autonomy - independence at work, responsibility and
accountability for one’s action.
7. Professional organization - operations under the umbrella of a
professional organization differentiates a profession from an
occupation.

Governance - establishment and maintenance of social, political and


economic arrangement by which practitioner control their
practice, self-discipline, working conditions and professional
affairs.

PROFESSIONAL NURSING - art and science, dominated by an ideal service
in which are applied to the well and ill, and through relationship with the
clients, significant others and other members of the health team.

PROFESSIONAL NURSE - one who has acquired the art and science of
nursing though basic education, which interprets her role in nursing in
terms of social ends for which it exists

A. NURSING - caring profession; unique profession


B.1. as a profession - an organization of an occupational group based on

DEFINITIONS OF NURSING ACCORDING TO:

Florence the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to


Nightingale assists him in his recovery.
Virginia the unique function of the nurse is to assist individuals,
Henderson sick or well, in the performance of those activities,
contributing to health or recovery (peaceful death), that
he would perform unaided if he had the necessary
strength, will or knowledge and to do in such a way to

Betty Neuman A unique profession that is concerned with all the
variables affecting an individual’s progress to stressors,
which are intra, inter and extrapersonal in nature.
Hildegard Peplau A therapeutic interpersonal process, functions
cooperatively with other human process that makes
health possible for people in the community.
Martha Rogers A humanistic science dedicated to compassionate
concern with maintaining and promoting health,
preventing illness and caring for and rehabilitating.
Sister Callista Roy Theoretical system of knowledge that prescribes a
process of analysis and action related to the care of the
ill or potentially ill.

ICN Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative


care of individuals of all ages. Families, groups and
communities, sick or well and in all settings.
ANA Nursing is a direct, goal-oriented practice and is
adaptable to the needs of the individual, family and
community during health and illness.
CNA Identification and treatment of human responses to
actual or potential health problems
PNA The act of initiating and performing services to
individuals, families and communities in any health care
setting.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES OF A NURSE

A. Philosophy in life - basic truth that contributes to personal growth is a


systematic fashion and with the principles relative to the moral values
that shape the facets of the character.
B. Good Personality
Personality - distinctive individual qualities that differ from one person to
another.

Components of Good Personality


1. Personal Appearance - healthy body motivated by unselfishness and
graciousness

1.2. Grooming - manifest personal hygiene and cleanliness

Nurses uniform - distinctive(identifies from other areas)


- respect the uniform, worn during office hours and not to
be worn with jewelries except pin/nameplate

2. Character - the moral values and beliefs used as guides to personal


behavior and actions
Charity - the greatest virtue
Virtues that emanates from charity:
- justice - righteousness, fairness
Prudence - carefulness, discretion
Fortitude - control of feelings, thoughts and emotions in times of
difficulty
Temperance - constructive use of pleasure of the senses

one’s set of moral values.

capacity to form sound opinions
5. Reliability - dependability, and use of sound judgement

2. Communicator -identify clients problems, communication is integral
