The Speech : To remove the ban of chewing

gum in Singapore

The script : My Speech is about the argument to lift

the ban of selling chewing gum in Singapore, you must
be thinking why I chose this one. Well, as a has-been
citizen and frequent visitor of Singapore. I chose to go
with one of the oddest law in Asia which is the ban of
chewing gum in Singapore. The origins of this ban was
in 1983 when Lee Kuan Yew was still prime minister,
The suggestion for the prohibition, according to Lee
Kuan Yew's autobiography, was presented to him by
Teh Cheang Wan, the country's minister for national
development, in 1983, while he was Singapore's prime
minister. In high-rise public housing buildings, chewed-
up gum was generating maintenance issues because
vandals dumped it in mailboxes, keyholes, and lift
buttons. In public spaces, chewing gum left on the
floor, stairways, and pavement raised cleaning costs
and harmed cleaning supplies. Another issue was gum
that got trapped on the seats of city buses. Chewing
gum imports were stopped right away as the
restriction was made public. Chewing gum sales were
entirely prohibited after a transitional period that
allowed stores to sell off their remaining inventory.
Offenders might face fines of up to S$2,000 for selling
chewing gum, while importers could face fines and/or
jail time. Gum supplies still on hand were seized. To
this day the law is still in statue of untouched.

Many people have said I will say it again that the ban of
chewing gum in Singapore should be lifted. Why so? To
this day those issues like vandalism in railway stations,
public transports, and building corridors by chewing
gum is non-existent and its definitely because of the
ban but its 2022 so I don’t think anyone would really
give that much attention to gum even if the ban has
been lifted so there is no point in having problems with
gum, and since the ban Is still on people still can go to
jail or can get a fine which could affect their financial
state as the average wage in Singapore per month is
5800 Singaporean dollars. In conclusion I would end
this speech by saying that this ban should be lifted
not just because of hygiene but also because of
finance and money.
