PREFACE

Innovative Idea Development is the overall process of taking a service or a product from

conception to market. New products and services are meant to fill a consumer demand or an

opportunity in the marketplace.

New products generally differ from a product line extension. Examples of new products

include things like one-cup gourmet coffee machines. Keurig machine offered the gourmet

coffee experience previously only found in a coffee shops, right at home. Examples of

product line extensions include products like Diet Coke. Coca-Cola company used Diet Coke

to target the market of soda drinkers that wanted a lower calorie soda than their regular Coke

product.

However the more loose definition of New Product includes not only new to the world

products and services, but also new to the market and new to the company products. It is

basically catering to a heretofore untapped customer need or want or desire.

This project has been carried out, to develop one such new product, in my favourite product

category – Oral Hygiene . That too, environment friendly - Toothbrush.

Who doesn’t use Toothbrush? And there are toothbrush that are already selling like hot cakes.

But this project aims to target several deeper issues.

For the past decade or so, residents of Mother Earth have been acquainting themselves with

the issues pertaining to the use of plastic. We know, by now, that plastic is not only deadly to

the Eart but also the human and animal life forms it supports. Despite this, plastic remains a

crucial aspect of our lives. In fact, it is the very first polymer over 98% of the world’s

population comes into contact with - the toothbrush. It goes without saying that toothbrushes

are an almost inalienable aspect of civilised life today. But at the same time, when the world
is now coming up with sustainable alternatives to the use of plastic products, maybe it is time

to truly understand what disadvantages plastic toothbrushes hold for human and planet life.

Second is Plastic is a product of liquid gold, i.e., petroleum. The very first polymer that we

use to clean out mouth is made of an indigestible and poisonous substance. Unfortunately, the

toothbrush consists of other toxic materials too. In order to make toothbrushes, plastic is used

in addition to nylon (for the bristles), rubber and this product, invariably, comes into contact

with crude oil by-products. Naturally, since plastic is a product of petroleum, this natural

resource is extracted in large quantities to cater to the toothbrush needs of the world. This

ensures that the already depleted global reserves of petroleum are further drained.

This mini project has been carried out to develop some degree of innovation in this product -

the Bamboo toothbrush, to offer variety to the esteemed customers and to thereby stir

energize an already saturated market of the Toothbrush Industry.

CHAPTER - 1

Introduction

New products are very essential for corporate success. Innovation is a must if you want to

continue competing in the market. However, the new product development is one of the

riskiest processes that require focus and high investments. In today’s market, careful

planning and a good product strategy are essential to help you succeed in the market.

Companies develop a large number of new products every year, but most of these products

fail to secure competitive advantages and end up adding high costs for the company.

Several studies have been done in the successful product launch cases, and success drivers

have been discovered. Among others, developing new unique products that are customer

centric and focus on several customer benefits should be the company mission. Continuous

research and planning are necessary if a company wants to launch a successful product. All

the employees of the company need to be involved, starting from R&D to Marketing, to

sales, to finances and so on.

CHAPTER - 2

Objectives

 To provide better services and facilities to bamboo growers, employees and

consumers.

 To earn trust of consumers by yielding superior experience and value.

 To step out for reduction of pollution to improve environmental conditions and

thereby achieve area development.

 Driving ambitiousness by operating our businesses at benchmark levels.

CHAPTER - 3

Toothbrush industry in India

The Indian oral care industry is pegged to reach Rs 7,000 crore, a 75 per cent jump over

the current market size, primarily because of increased awareness through advertising

coupled with faster penetration of oral care products. The demand for toothbrush is set

to witness a 150 per cent rise as more consumers will take to using branded

toothbrushes.

The size of oral care market in India is Rs 4,000 crore as against Rs 11,000 crore in

China. Penetration of modern oral care products is low in India. The average per-capita

consumption of toothpaste in India is very low at approximately 110 gms and many

people in rural India still clean their teeth with traditional products like twigs of the

neem tree, salt, ash, and other herbal items.

Also, just 7 per cent of the population here brushes twice a day as compared with 61

per cent in China. But I believe this situation will improve over the next five years.

At present, about 700 million units of toothbrush are being sold in India of which our

share is about 40 per cent. I feel that as more consumers are opting to use the

toothbrush as opposed to any other means of brushing, the projected demand for

toothbrush units will grow to about 1,700 million units.

The main reasons for this growth will be increasing awareness and advertising

campaigns coupled with the overall penetration of oral care products in the country.

The World Dental Federation quotes that an estimated 3.5 billion people i.e. approx. 50

percent of the world's population suffers from oral health issues. The organization also

states that untreated tooth decay is the most common disease in the world right now.
In India, as per Indian Dental Association, around 90 percent of adults and 80 percent

of children in India suffer from dental cavities. Only half of the country’s entire

population uses recommended and quality toothbrushes, of which only 25 percent brush

twice a day. All these statistics are clear evidence of poor oral and dental health in our

country. Brushing twice a day should be equivalent to taking a shower every day.

There is a dire need to create awareness among consumers around good oral hygiene

practices and make the transition easier with effective products.

People in recent times have a strong inclination towards health and wellness. However,

alongside having a healthy body and mind, consumers have started paying attention

to oral health. With increasing awareness, consumers have realized issues in oral care

might result in simple matters like bleeding gums or cavities or teeth pain. In the worst

scenario, it could also result in problems like heart diseases, gut health issues, etc.

Scientific studies have been published stating that maintaining proper oral care reduces

the risk of diabetes. And in the case of diabetic patients, paying attention to oral care

helps to maintain the blood glucose level. What starts as a simple cavity in your teeth

might turn out to be the causative agent for bacterial pneumonia or sepsis and

sometimes even cancer.

Hence, irrespective of age and gender, it is extremely important to pay higher attention

to oral health to lead a healthier life.

Chapter 4

Methodology

This report offers high-quality insights and is the outcome of detailed research methodology

comprising extensive secondary research. More than 1,000 authenticated secondary sources,

such as fact book, press release, journals, white papers, patents, and articles have been

leveraged to gather the data.

Technological innovation: Technological advancement is the key factor for any production

sector as it enhances productivity on one hand and reduces cost of production. In bamboo

toothbrush sector in Assam technological advancement is poor and most of the people

depend on traditional tools and equipment.

Most of the units being small scale or cottage with poor financial capability use low cost

tools and machineries in their different stages of production. Being largely labour intensive

they apply manual labour in all stages and this results in reduced productivity per day. These

traditional tools are also often locally produced or purchased from the market. They use

different types of knifes in the different stages of production. Important features of

mechanization are, increasing the productivity of labour, high quality maintained, large scale

production, reducing the cost of production and create variety of design and shapes.

Technical developments are more necessary in bamboo treatment methods in Assam. One of

the major weaknesses of bamboo used as raw material for production of various items is that

it is prone to fungal and insect attacks unless treated appropriately. Therefore, it is necessary

to treat the bamboos properly to prevent such occurrences. Borax, Boric acid and copper

sulphate are commonly used components in treatments. Most of the artisans do not know the
proper combination of the chemical solutions; therefore, it affects the durability and quality

of products and largely the health of the users, causing respiratory, skin problems, and other

severe ailments if not handled with care and caution. Treatment machines are not cost–

effective and hence not in common use. This calls for low cost effective machines to cater to

these small scale and cottage industrial units.

Chapter 5
Description of the New Product

Plant-based bamboo toothbrush with all components made from plant: bristles, handle,

wrapper and box. Compostable packaging. Brush with Bamboo makes the world's most eco-

friendly toothbrushes made with the highest quality standards. Each bamboo toothbrush

replaces a non-biodegradable plastic toothbrush. The toothbrush is an oral hygiene instrument

used to clean the teeth, gums, and tongue.

It consists of a head of tightly clustered bristle, atop of which toothpaste can be applied,

mounted on a handle which facilitates the cleaning of hard to reach areas of the mouth. They

are usually used alongside floss. They are available with different bristle textures, sizes, and

forms. Most dentists recommend using a soft toothbrush since hard-bristled toothbrushes can

damage tooth enamel and irritate the gums

CHAPTER - 6

Commercial Aspects and Feasibility

Manufacturing of bamboo based utility and fancy articles are being used in every housed in

India and abroad. Bamboos are mainly growing in hill border areas and available in plenty in

north eastern states including Assam in India. Various types of domestic utility, decorative

and fancy articles are produced out of bamboo by doing certain preliminary process of

bamboo with simple technology. Simple tools are being used for making desired articles by

the traditional artisans.

There are traditional and non-traditional artisans working in the bamboo toothbrush sector

and they produce both conventional and modern items. Raw material is sourced from the

home gardens as well as from forest and the price of one bamboo ranges between Rs. 25 to

Rs. 100 depending on its length and size. Traditional and common tools are used for different

stages of production purpose. Trained artisans and traditional people are engaged in the

bamboo sector with training obtained from the Office of the Development Commissioner

(Toothbrush).

Bamboo is a raw material of great versatility and forms an integral part of the lifestyle and

economy of Assam. With 91 genera and over 1000 species, it is also the fastest growing

woody plant in the world. India is the second richest country in terms of Bamboo genetic

diversity with a total of 136 species under 36 genera. It encompasses about 8.96 million

hectares of forest area, which is equivalent to 12.8 per cent of the total forest cover of the

country. In Assam, the important species of bamboo of economic value are the Bhaluka

bamboo(bambusa balcooa), Jati bamboo(Bambusa tulda), Muli (Melocanna bambusoides),

Dalu(Teinostachyum dalloa), Khang(Dendrocalmus longispatnus), Kaligoda(Oxytenanthera

nigrociliata) and Pecha (Dendrocalamus Hamilton-ii). The Muli and the Dalu have great
commercial importance, the former for pulping, constructional and fencing purposes and the

later for the mat and basket industry.

In fact, certain species of the bamboo can grow 91 cm in just a day, at a rate of almost

4cm/hour. It grows so fast that bamboo groves are easily replaced making it a renewable

resource. It absorbs 35% more CO2 per hectare than equivalent trees. There is a 3-5 year

return on investment for a 16 new bamboo plantation. It can grow on marginal and degraded

land, elevated ground, river banks etc. It adapts to most climatic conditions and soil types.

The best thing about bamboo is that it is so versatile that it can be put to all kinds of uses

from making furniture to food. In addition to subsistence and livelihood, the real benefits of

bamboo accrue from value added products. Toothbrush are established possibilities, produced

in finished form. Bamboo is also popular in various kitchens where bamboo shoot is used to

make pickles, curries and other delicious cuisines. There are musical instruments made of

Bamboo.

On 25.4.2018, The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Centrally

Sponsored Scheme of National Bamboo Mission(NBM) under National Mission for

Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) during remaining period of 14th Finance Commission

(2018-19 & 2019-20). An outlay of Rs. 1290 crore (with Rs. 950 crore as Central share) is

provisioned for implementation of the Mission during the remaining period of 14th Finance

Commission (2018-19 and 2019-20). The Mission will focus on development of bamboo in

limited States where it has social, commercial and economic advantage, particularly in the

North Eastern regions. The scheme will benefit directly and indirectly the farmers as well as

local artisans and associate personnel engaged in bamboo sector including associated

industries. The Mission is expected to establish about 4000 treatment/product development

units and bring more that 100000 ha under plantation. It has the following merits:
 It is environmental friendly as it does not add to the existing pollution level

 The transmission and distribution losses are minimized as the plants are located

invariably in the rural areas.

 Operating cost is very low.

Benefits of Bamboo Toothbrush

The proposed project is utilizing the bamboo crop in the most efficient manner for eco-

friendly products. The optimum production of conventional but quality bamboo products will

cater to value added domestic and international markets. The sound techno-economic and

commercial viability of this project, coupled with highest efficiency in all aspects of product

manufacture, will pave the way for integration of bamboo industry in the country. The socio-

economic benefits arising out of this project for the local populace will include creation of

direct and indirect jobs and consequent rise in the income levels, associated commercial and

social infrastructure development in the mofussil areas, better environment and higher returns

for the bamboo crop due to higher yield and cane price. At the national and the State levels,

the benefits include reduced emissions, reduction in the imports of bamboo products,

increased tax revenues and reduction in the transportation costs. At the project and promoter

levels, the captioned project offers excellent opportunities for expansion, flexibility of

operations depending on the market situation for each product. The project will have

excellent multiplier effect and will become truly a win-win situation for all the stakeholders.

Thus, the proposed project has substantial socio-economic and environmental benefits at the

local, the State, the Regional and the National levels.

 Moso bamboo, which grows a metre a day without the need for fertiliser, is highly

sustainable, safe and eco-friendly. This species of bamboo is dubbed “panda-friendly”

because pandas do not eat it or inhabit the area where it grows.

 Some bamboo toothbrushes use sturdier nylon bristles which helps them last longer,

so you need fewer replacements.

 Heat treated bamboo has a carbonised surface, giving it a quality finish and good

service life. The carbonisation finishing process provides water resistance and

prevents the growth of microbes (bacteria and moulds) during normal use.

 The bamboo handle can be re-used for plant markers or craft uses

Market

Compostable toothbrush market will grow in the future owing to the rising awareness of

plastic pollution and which is becoming one of the reason for the consumers to reconsidering

their everyday choices. Brushing teeth has been a part of daily routine from so long that

consumers are thinking about compostable toothbrushes. Compostable toothbrushes are not

generally fully compostable as their bristles are made up of nylon, however their stick is

made up of bamboo. Bamboo toothbrushes are quickly becoming a staple in many

households, not only because they’re naturally antimicrobial, but also because of their eco-

friendliness and biodegradability. A bamboo toothbrush will naturally decompose after it is

been disposed of. In the over-polluted world, switching over to bamboo toothbrushes is so

crucial and which is one of the reason of the growth of compostable toothbrush market.
Strategy and Implementation

For implementing this project within the desired time and cost schedules, it is essential to

undertake meticulous planning, right from the conceptual stages. Following aspects of the

project implementation will be crucial:

a) Intensifying bamboo development activities by networking and supporting the farmers

from the command area.

b) Effecting timely project development activities, including securing various approvals /

NoC’s / permissions for each component of the integrated project.

c) Appointment of pre-investment consultants and experts for preparation of DPRs,

approaching select FIs / bankers, rendering required follow up and achieving financial

closure, through raising of required equity and providing necessary securities.

d) Finalization of mode of project implementation, package route and O&M contracts for

individual project components, along with strong owner engineering / consultancy team for

effective monitoring of the implementation / commissioning of each component as per the

schedule, is recommended, considering the complexities of individual projects.

e) XYZCSL proposes to appoint experienced project engineering management consultancy

firm, as well as experienced in-house project team for the purpose.

f) Manpower and resource mobilization at required time and effectively.

Sales Strategy

The socio-economic benefits arising out of this project for the local populace will include

creation of direct and indirect jobs and consequent rise in the income levels, associated

commercial and social infrastructure development in the areas, improved quality and
availability of bamboo, better environment and higher returns for the cane crop due to higher

yield and bamboo price. At the national and the State levels, the benefits include, reduced

emissions, reduction in the imports of bamboo products, increased tax revenues and reduction

in the transportation costs. The project will have excellent multiplier effect and will become

truly a win-win situation for all the stakeholders. Thus, the proposed project has substantial

socio-economic and environmental benefits at the local, the State, the Regional and the

National levels

expected to have a positive impact on the growth of the compostable toothbrush market.

North America is a growing market due to new Act and FDA regulations for the

biodegradable products which is likely to boost the compostable toothbrush market. The

Global Bamboo Toothbrush Market to grow from USD 525.8 million in 2018 to USD 842.1

Million by 2024 at a CAGR of 7%. With 3.5 billion toothbrushes being sold each year,

www.entrepreneurindia.co the bamboo toothbrush market has a wide scope for expansion,

especially considering that the global toothbrush market is reaching maturity. With numerous

anti-plastic legislation being promulgated in various countries along with government support

for eco-friendly alternatives for plastic goods, the bamboo toothbrush industry could

eventually dominate the global toothbrush industry. A rapidly expanding consumer base and
support from numerous governments for eco-friendly ventures are expected to drive market

growth during the forecast period.

Marketing Strategy

The marketing strategy of our firm centres on creating and developing a corporate

identity that clearly defines our market niche in terms that benefit our retail and

corporate customers.

Since our target market includes two major segments – lower to-middle class residents

in the Local area, and local businesses that are located inside or outside the Local

Industrial Park - their most important needs are service, price, and delivery, in that

order. One of the key points of our firm’s strategy is to focus on these target segments

that know and understand these needs, and are willing to pay a reasonable price to have

them fulfilled. Factors such as current local trends and historical sales data of similar

businesses in the area, ensure that the high demand for compostable toothbrush will

continue over the next five years.

Trends are in our favour: With numerous anti-plastic legislation being propagated in

various countries along with government support for eco-friendly alternatives for

plastic goods, the bamboo toothbrush industry could eventually gain recognition in the

global toothbrush industry. Bamboo Toothbrushes are of different product types, such

as adults and kids that are distributed through channel such as online and offline.

This report studies the market covering a period of 12 years of trend and forecast. The

report provides detailed insights into the market dynamics to enable informed business

decision making and growth strategy formulation based on the opportunities present in

the market.
Cost-effective use of marketing money is one of our keys to success. To reach our

potential customers, a combination of marketing techniques will be utilized:

• Local media (radio is most effective in the Local area, followed by print media).

Radio and newspaper advertising will include our core positioning message, and the

compostable that we offer, in order to differentiate our service from the competition.

• Sales literature. To drive sales initially, we will utilize a full colour catalogue with a

different cover including the company logo and contact address. We have developed a

price sheet to be enclosed with each catalogue. In addition, we will produce in-house

flyers on an as-needed basis that will also serve to advertise special events and sales

promotions. The flyers and catalogues will be distributed using traditional methods

such as:

a) give-away in store,

b) enclose in order shipments,

c) hire distributors or personally hand out in the Local Industrial Park area,

e) distribute at local trade shows and other business events organized by the local

Chamber of Commerce, and

f) attach business card and coupons.

Upon release of a new catalogue, we will need to check into the financial feasibility of

utilizing direct mail for bulk distribution. Certainly, the main task will be to clearly

define the message of our sales literature to make certain that we are selling the

company, rather than the products and services.

• Direct mail
• Grand opening

• Industry specific trade shows and other local business events

• Internet marketing

• Word of mouth All marketing decisions with regard to specific media choices,

frequency, size and costs will be conducted on an ongoing basis with careful

consideration of results (generated returns).

The concept of prevention of using plastic in our Bamboo Toothbrush, will be highly

propagated and used in marketing campaigns.

Pricing Strategy

Our retail and corporate customers are especially sensitive to service value. As a firm,

we must ensure that price and service are perceived to be a good value to our

customers. High-quality bamboo toothbrush will be offered at a reasonable price, but

the price will certainly not be the lowest in the area. In the limited-service toothbrush

industry, one message rings true: other competitors can always beat you on price.

Therefore, our pricing strategy will be competitive within the various product range,

but will not rely on the selling price to overshadow other advantages of doing business

with our company, such as a diverse line of high-quality toothbrush products, that are

readily available, reasonably priced, environment friendly and on-time delivery. In

addition, we recognize that price flexibility is critical to our success. We are prepared to

offer discounts and allowances, sales promotion prices, and to reduce the price over

limited periods of time during the slow-sales hours, in order to increase our operating

capacity usage, and reduce or eliminate idle capacity and subsequent losses. Freight-out

costs will be accounted for in such a manner that delivery prices will not differ from the

prices offered at the counter.

Sourcing Strategy

Availability of Raw material The viability of this Project mainly depends on availability of

bamboo. The site of the XYZCSL is located in the heart bamboo area. The distance of water

supply scheme is 5 km from the site. The required labour is easily available in nearby

villages. All infrastructure facilities are available near the site of the factory. Rainfall The

intensity of water supply depends on irrigation projects and supporting rainfall. Soil The

majority of the soil which is suitable for bamboo cultivation. The area is traditional bamboo

growing area. The existing and proposed irrigation facilities are adequate to support bamboo

cultivation however XYZCSL proposes to improve varietal composition to provide early

maturity and high yielding.

From above it can be easily concluded that:

 The factory of ASCSL has good availability and potential for developing bamboo

cultivation in the surrounding areas of the factory.

 As the farmers in the region have grown bamboo in the past, it will not be difficult for the

society to induce the farmers to bring additional area under cane cultivation.

 The bamboo for the factory of XYZCSL should come from the command area, as this will

reduce its transportation cost.

 There is good scope for increasing area under bamboo as the irrigation of these tehsils

along the riverside is very good.

Chapter 9

Limitations

1. They require preservation

2. Shrinkage: Bamboo shrinks much greater than any other type of timber especially

when it loses water.

3. Durability: Bamboo should be sufficiently treated against insect or fungus attack

before being utilized for building purposes.

4. Jointing: Despite prevalence of various techniques of jointing, structural reliability of

bamboo is questionable

5. Most of the bamboo brushes on the market still have nylon bristles, so at least that

part of the brush has to be thrown away.

6. The only fully biodegradable toothbrushes use natural bristles made from pig or

badger hair which dentists claim are too hard and abrasive on our delicate gums.

7. Natural bristles retain moisture and can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

8. Most still end up in regular waste.
