Let’s have a REVIEW!
Transform the following general form of the equation into
standard form and identify the type of conics, and the
values of A and B on each example.
What I need to know?

At the end of the lesson, students are

expected to
1. Solve situational problems involving conic
sections
2. Solve system of nonlinear equations
3. Relate the lesson to real-life situations
SYSTEMS OF NONLINEAR EQUATIONS
GRAPH the system of nonlinear equations. Solve the system
algebraically.
𝟗𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝟓𝒚𝟐 = 𝟐𝟐𝟓
1.)൝ 𝟐
𝒙 + 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙 = 𝟏𝟓

𝒙−𝟏=𝟎
2.) ቊ 𝟐
𝒚 = 𝟒𝟗 − 𝒙𝟐

𝒙−𝒚=𝟎
3.) ቐ(𝒙−𝟏)𝟐
− 𝒚𝟐 = 𝟏
𝟗
SYSTEMS OF NONLINEAR EQUATIONS
GRAPH the system of nonlinear equations. Solve the system
algebraically.
𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 = 𝟑𝟔
4.)൝ 𝟐
𝒙 +𝒚−𝟑=𝟎

𝒙𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔 − 𝒚𝟐
5.) ቊ
𝟐𝒚 − 𝒙 + 𝟑 = 𝟎
𝒙 + 𝒚 = −𝟏
6.) ቊ
(𝒚 − 𝟏)𝟐 = 𝟒 + 𝒙
SYSTEMS OF NONLINEAR EQUATIONS
GRAPH the system of nonlinear equations. Solve the system
algebraically.
𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝒚 + 𝟐 = 𝟎
7.)ቊ
𝒚 − 𝟓𝒙 = 𝟏

𝟗𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏𝟖𝒙 − 𝟏𝟔𝒚 = 𝟎

8.) ൝
𝒚 − 𝟐 𝟐 = 𝟗(𝒙 + 𝟐)

𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟒𝒚𝟐 + 𝟖𝒚 − 𝟐 = 𝟎
9.) ൝ 𝟐
𝟓𝒙 − 𝟏𝟎𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐𝒚𝟐 + 𝟐𝟒𝒚 − 𝟓𝟖 = 𝟎
Solving Word Problems

1.) The square of a certain number exceeds twice the

𝟏
square of another number by . Also, the sum of
𝟖
𝟓
their squares is . Find the possible pairs of
𝟏𝟔
numbers that satisfy these conditions.
Solving Word Problems
2.) NASA’s KC-135A craft flies in parabolic arcs to stimulate
the weightlessness experienced by astronauts in space.
The aircraft starts its ascent at 24,000 ft. During the
ascent, all on board experience 2g’s or twice the pull of
Earth’s gravity. As the aircraft approaches its maximum
height, the engines are stopped, and the aircraft is allowed
to free fall at a precisely determined angle. Zero gravity is
achieved for 25 seconds as the plane reaches the top of
the parabola and begins its descent. After this 25-second
period, the engines are throttled to bring the aircraft out of
the drive.
Solving Word Problems
If the height of the aircraft in feet (y) versus time in
seconds (x) is modeled by the equation
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟔𝟓𝒙 + 𝟎. 𝟏𝟏𝒚 − 𝟐𝟔𝟖𝟑. 𝟕𝟓 = 𝟎, what is the
maximum height achieved by the aircraft during its
parabolic flight?
Solving Word Problems

3. A satellite dish has a shape called a paraboloid

where each cross-section is a parabola. Since radio
signals (parallel to the axis) will bounce off the
surface of the dish to the focus, the receiver should
be placed at the focus. How far should the receiver
be from the vertex, if the dish is 12 feet across, and
4.5 ft deep at the vertex?
Solving Word Problems

4. An arch of a bridge is semi-elliptical, with major

axis horizontal. The base of the arch is 30 feet
across, and the highest part of the arch is 10 feet
above the horizontal roadway, as shown in the
figure. Find the height of the arch 6 feet from the
center of the base.
