Why do we need to learn to

communicate?
• Simply because it lies at the heart of whatever
work people do
• Communication with other people is the most
important skill that you will need to work
successfully
• We take communication for granted; we will
look at 4 main areas - speaking, listening,
writing and reading.

Good midwife/doctors communicate

effectively with patients—they identify
patients' problems more accurately,
and patients are more satisfied with
the care they receive. But what are the
necessary communication skills and
how can midwife/doctors acquire
them?

When midwife use communication

skills effectively, both they and their
patients benefit.
• Firstly, midwife identify their
patients' problems more accurately.
• Secondly, their patients are more
satisfied with their care and can
better understand their problems,
investigations, and treatment
options.
25/02/2014 LSB-EEFK 15

• Thirdly, patients are more likely to adhere

to treatment and to follow advice on
behaviour change.
• Fourthly, patients' distress and their
vulnerability to anxiety and depression are
lessened.
• Finally, midwife’s own wellbeing is
improved. We present evidence that
midwife do not communicate with their
patients as well as they should, and we
consider possible reasons for this.

Good Communication Skill

• Key to success in life, work and relationships.
• Without effective communication, a message
can turn into error, misunderstanding,
frustration or even disaster by being
misinterpreted or poorly delivered
• Communication is successful only when both
the sender and the receiver understand the
same information

• Effective midwife/doctor-patient
communication is a central clinical
function in building a therapeutic
midwife/doctor-patient relationship,
which is the heart and art of medicine.
• This is important in the delivery of
high-quality health care.
• Much patient dissatisfaction and many
complaints are due to breakdown in
the midwife/doctor patient

relationship.

• However, many midwife/doctors tend

to overestimate their ability in
communication.
• Over the years, much has been
published in the literature on this
important topic.
• We review the literature on
midwife/doctor-patient
communication

Communication Skills
• Communication skills learned at an early
age will provide you with the skills that
you need to interact successfully with a
wide variety of people and situations,
while a lack of communication skills will
make it more difficult for you to get what
you want out of life.

25/02/2014 LSB-EEFK 31

The most important part of having good communication, especially if

you are shy, is to remain relaxed, open, and confident
You simply have to say to yourself ” I QUIT BEING SHY” and GET OVER IT.
