WEEK5WRITTENWORK

CLASSIFICATION OF ORGANISMS TEST (75points)

You will answer the following questions:

1. What is meant by classification?

Classification in biology refers to the systematic grouping of organisms based on structural or

functional similarities or evolutionary history. A method for establishing, defining, and ranking
taxa within a hierarchical series of groups.

2. Why is classifying living things important?

Classifying living things in order to fully understand the relationships between different
organisms.

3. How has classification made study of diversity possible?

Classification is useful because it groups similar organisms into the same categories, allowing
us to study them. Organisms are extremely diverse, and it is impossible to read about them in
different ways.

4. What does taxonomy mean?

Taxonomy is the branch of science which deals with naming, grouping organisms based on
degree of similarity, as well as arranging them in order based on their evolutionary
history relationship.

5. Write in a paragraph on "what would happen if living beings did not have scientific names and
were not grouped." Mention at least five consequences.

Every species that is living in this world is given a scientific name through the binomial
nomenclature system. When the living beings have not their scientific names and group, they
would not able to study all the living beings. It is vital to have names or classifications to
demonstrate the relationship between the organism and its contemporaries. Here are some of
the outcomes if they did not have scientific names and were not grouped:

1. The living organism cannot be easily categorized and thus, it will be difficult to understand the
characteristics of a specific organism.
2. These names will not help you to avoid confusion if they have similar names or if they not
group properly.

3. This will be a problem to general if they have not scientific names and it will not be accepted
to broadly.

4. The living beings will just be a random organism if they are not grouped together with their
resembling kind of living being.

5. It will not help to determine the specific relationships to others like their similarities and
differences and their prospective characteristics.
