THEORY

A half-controlled rectifier is a type of rectifier circuit that is used to convert AC power

to DC power. It is called "half-controlled or Semi-Controlled" because it uses only
two thyristor and two diodes (a type of electronic switch) to control the output
voltage.

In the context of controlling a DC motor, a half-controlled rectifier can be used to

vary the speed of the motor. By adjusting the firing angle of the thyristor, the
amount of voltage delivered to the motor can be controlled. This allows for smooth
and precise control of the motor's speed, making it useful in a variety of industrial
and automation applications.

Since single-phase semi-controlled rectifier can only deliver power in one direction,
so the motor will only run in one direction. To reverse the motor direction, additional
circuitry will be required. Additionally, using a thyristor can lead to harmonic
distortion and electromagnetic interference, which must be managed to ensure
proper operation of the motor and surrounding equipment.
