Among the following false claims that were stated within the social media
platform/website, Facebook. The most contemporary and controversial inaccuracy that was
claimed is that of the "The Marcos Era was the Golden Era of the Philippines". This false
claim was dated back during proclamation No. 1081 on September 21, 1972, which was
signed by former president Ferdinand Marcos (Official Gazette.gov.ph, Declaration of
martial law: Govph).

During the interview of President Bong Bong Marcos by Karen Davila, Within the
conversation we can infer from his words that President Bong Bong Marcos seems to
showcase a different perspective of martial law from the eyes of today’s people specifically
highlighting the opinions of the youth. In their discussion President Bong Bong Marcos has
stated the following “Buti pa noong panahon ni Marcos, maginhawa ang buhay” and “Buti
pa noong panahon ni Marcos, maraming programa, maraming proyekto.” Around at the
end of the video another public figure was interviewed where he added that during the time
of former president FEM, everything specially the essentials and goods was affordable and
were at a low-price range, the footage shows how this public figure is highlighting how good
FEM governed during that time painting that section of history as if Martial Law was the
Golden Era of the Philippines.

However, their statements seem to fail to capture the viewpoint of the common man,
fallacies that just went through the eyes of the Marcoses, as it failed to showcase the different
opinions of individuals regarding their perspective during the that period. Nevertheless, we
were able to debunk those statements using the following primary sources as counter claims.
Starting off with the with the first primary source regarding the economy of the Philippines
during the martial law era. The early years of the Marcos regime saw a respectable growth of
6% in GDP of the country. However, it dramatically shrank by 7.3% for two consecutive
years in contrast with the GDP per person which also fell by a whopping 9.4%, bringing the
country’s economy to its knees, pulling down our trajectory, and effectively stole our future
incomes (Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission, Was martial law good
for the Philippine Economy? 2022). Another factor that may help us in countering the
HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY

derogatory claims about martial law as the golden age of the Philippines is by comparing the
consumer price index of the past years up to the martial law era. According to Ateneo de
Manila University’s virtual martial law museum which houses a great number of primary
sources on martial law in the Philippines.

The graph shows the change in consumer price index (CPI), as well as the prices of
food and non-food items from 1962 to 1985. The CPI gives a measure of the prices of goods
purchased by a typical consumer. The graph above clearly shows a sharp increase in the
prices of goods during the Marcos era. Especially by the last ten years, we can see that the
prices of basic commodities have tripled, such that what cost Php 100 in 1976 now cost more
than Php 300—even nearing Php 400—in 1986 (Martial law in Data 2022). Lastly, for the
final primary source which tackles the country’s international debt. According to a study
from the University of the Philippines School of Economics. From a nominal debt of $0.36
billion in 1961 to an enormous figure of $28.26 billion in 1986. The massive increase in our
loans provides an explanation for the expansion, notably in infrastructure, that has been
predominantly used by some to evaluate the Marcos regime's economic success. Debt-driven
growth, on the other hand, is growth that forgoes long-term advantages in favor of instant
gratification, which ultimately results in more load than profit for the generations that must
pay off these loans, which clearly contradicts the statements “Buti pa noong panahon ni
Marcos, maginhawa ang buhay” and“Buti pa noong panahon ni Marcos, maraming
programa, maraming proyekto.” (De Dios et al., Martial law and the Philippine economy
2021).

From the following false claims that are stated in the following TikTok accounts, the
one that stand out the most is the “Edsa Revolution” the false claim is that people who is
involve in the revolution has stormed the gates of Malacañang with torches and sticks way
back 1986. The scene was showing case from the film “Maid in Malacañang”.

The EDSA Revolution was a seminal event in the Philippines that took place from
February 22-25, 1986, and marked the end of the authoritarian regime of President Ferdinand
Marcos. It was a peaceful and nonviolent demonstration of people power, in which hundreds
of thousands of Filipinos gathered at the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Manila to
protest the widespread corruption, political repression, and human rights abuses of the
Marcos regime. The events leading up to the EDSA Revolution had their roots in the early
1980s, when opposition to the Marcos regime began to gain momentum. The Marcos regime
was marked by widespread corruption, political repression, and human rights abuses, and
many Filipinos began to question the legitimacy of his rule. In 1983, Marcos' political rival,
former Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., was assassinated upon his return from exile, sparking
widespread outrage and further fueling opposition to the regime.

The EDSA Revolution itself was sparked by a popular uprising against the Marcos
regime. On February 22, 1986, Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile and Lieutenant General
Fidel Ramos, both members of the Marcos regime, announced their defection from the
government and declared their support for the opposition. This was followed by a massive
peaceful demonstration at EDSA, which was attended by hundreds of thousands of Filipinos
from all walks of life. The protesters, who were known as the "Yellow Army" due to the
yellow ribbons they wore, defied government orders to disperse and continued to
demonstrate peacefully, even as the Marcos regime declared martial law and deployed troops
to the streets. The demonstrations at EDSA lasted for four days and were characterized by an
outpouring of people power, as Filipinos from all walks of life came together to demand an
end to the Marcos regime. On February 25, 1986, after a prolonged standoff, Marcos and his
family fled the country, and Vice President Corazon Aquino was proclaimed as the new
President of the Philippines. The EDSA Revolution was a defining moment in Philippine
history and marked the restoration of democracy in the country after more than two decades
of authoritarian rule. Today, the EDSA Revolution is widely celebrated as a symbol of
people power and is regarded as a seminal moment in the Philippines' political history. The
event has inspired similar peaceful demonstrations in other countries around the world and
remains a powerful symbol of hope and democracy for people everywhere. The EDSA
Revolution is commemorated annually as a national holiday in the Philippines and is
remembered as a testament to the power of the people to effect change through peaceful
means.
