PRAYER
The Disciples Prayer

Lord, it is your desire for everyone to know you. Help me to be a part of that. Help me to be a
good disciple for your kingdom and give me the grace to disciple others. Help me to advance
your kingdom every day.

Lord, reveal to me my weaknesses and give me the strength to grow in these areas so that I am a
better example to those that I disciple. Send me out into my community, my country, and all over
the world to disciple others and show them how to grow near to you.

Help me to remember that I am your tool for accomplishing your plan. You are the one who is
working in their lives and drawing them to yourself.

Help me to commission those that I am discipling to follow your calling on their lives. Help me
to prepare them to go out and make disciples themselves so that your church can be grown
around the globe.

God, prepare the hearts of those who will become your disciples to have ears to hear and
understand, and that they would become strong followers of you.

I love you Lord, help me to show others how to love you too. Amen.

Week 5:
Jesus: The Foundation of Christianity
Big Question:
How do we respond to God’s love and mission in the Church?

Imagine you are Peter and Jesus is speaking to you, saying:

“You are the rock and on this rock foundation, I will build my Church. I will give you the keys of the
Kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19)

What would be your response to Jesus?

Peter told Jesus that He was the Son of the Living God and because of his confession Jesus responded
with the promise: "l tell you that you are Peter and on this rock, I will build my Church." Peter is
confessing his faith in Jesus, the Son of the Living God, and Jesus is giving Peter the key of the kingdom
of heaven. Calling Peter "Rock" which is translated in Greek as "Petros" has a significant meaning. Peter
owed this title to God who revealed to him the real identity of Jesus. Jesus entrusts to Peter the keys of the
kingdom of heaven, which means that Peter has given the power to decide whether to accept or not those
who said they believe in Christ. Peter's role is to teach, rule, and guide the members of the Church.

After Jesus' resurrection, Peter was commissioned together with other apostles, namely, James and John,
sons of Zebedee, Bartolomew, Philip, Matthew, Judas Thaddeus, Judas Iscariot, Simon the Zealot, James,
son of Alphaeus, and Thomas (Matthias replaced Judas Iscariot).

As soon as Jesus ascended to heaven, He stayed with His Father and this means that He is no longer
visible that's why He appointed Peter as vicar or representative of the Church. Jesus promised Peter and
His apostles that He will be with them until the end of time, after He commissioned them, that's why, they
became careful to appoint successors in the hierarchically structured, the Church.

The power that Jesus gave to the apostles were handed down to the Pope and Bishops of today. This is
called apostolic succession. The Pope is the representative of Peter, while the Bishops are the successors
of the other apostles. This task and hierarchy of the Church is called ministry of service. Jesus builds the
Church on Peter as the foundation. From among the twelve apostles, Jesus chose Peter to be their leader.
Because of Peter's proclamation of Jesus as the Christ and the Son of the Living God, he was given such a
great responsibility in the Church. Peter believes that it is all about God's grace and using that grace for
the service of God's people.

We too, like Peter are given the responsibilities as living stones of the Church, though we know we
have our limitations or weaknesses. We are called to love and serve others and proclaim our faith in
words and in deeds, especially to those who do not know Jesus yet.
All of us have the chance to become active members of the Church, especially the young people of
today.

Young people like you can be compared to Peter when Peter was called to become the living stones
of His church. Like Peter you are challenged to be awakened and be renewed in your commitment to
grow in the Church and be with the Church. You may join parish activities. If you are gifted with good
voice or can play musical instruments you can join the choir and lead the people to God through music. If
you are a good speaker you can become good lector or commentator and experience the joy of spreading
the Good News of salvation.

When World Youth Day '95 was held here in the Philippines we experienced to be with the youth
who gathered together to pray, to sing, to reflect, to be with their fellow young people, to go on
pilgrimage and meet Pope John Paul ll. We felt the joy and love of Jesus through the witnessing of the
youth. Indeed, the young people are what the Church needs now.

Week 6:
Jesus: Commissioning of His Disciple
Big Question:
How do we respond to the task of evangelization as disciple of Jesus?

After Jesus was resurrected from the dead, He has all the power of heaven and earth to send
His apostles to proclaim the Good News of Salvation to all nations; just as He had been sent by His
Father to carry out His mission throughout the world. Like Jesus, the apostles too, commit themselves to
service and they were assured by Jesus words: "l will be with you until the end of time." Jesus
commissioned His apostles and their successors to continue His three-fold mission here on earth. - PCP
11; 105

Christ did not only call His disciples to follow Him. He did not only gather them around Him. His final
words to them are words of missioning: "you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Jesus commissions His disciples to continue His mission until the end of time. They are to spread
the Good News—all the truths about Jesus and that forever, He remains. They are authentic witnesses of
Christ and their successors should be the same as they empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Today, as members of the Church we share in the mission of Christ as priest, prophet, and
king, and we call this work an "apostolate."

The call to discipleship is engaging in the missionary task of the Church. As disciples, we
are committed to participate in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission of Jesus.

As sharers of priestly mission of Christ, we must present ourselves as a sacrifice, living, holy, and
pleasing to God, praising God and bearing witness to Christ. We exercise our priesthood by the reception
of the Sacraments, prayer and thanksgiving and our own witnessing of holy life.

Finally we shares the kingly mission of Christ, we must have the power to overcome sin. We order
creation in the praise of God, and make the world livable because of our manifestation of the values of
Christ to be king is to minister, to serve.

PCP 11; 121

 Jesus commissioned His apostles to the task of evangelization.

 Like the Apostles, we too, are commissioned by Jesus to the task of evangelization by exercising
well our priestly, prophetic, and kingly functions.

Generalization

Every school has its own mission statement. This mission statement expresses the commitment of the
school to form its clientele holistically that is mental, social, physical emotional, and spiritual formation. From the
school’s mission, we can form our own mission statement, which serves as our commitment to the task of
proclaiming the Good News of salvation.

The Church may not have a formal mission statement like an educational instruction but by its nature it is
missionary. The missionary task of the Church moves us to respond to the call of discipleship.

Closing
Prayer

The Mission
Here's a call going out across the land in every nation
A call to all who swear allegiance to the cross of Christ
A call to true humility, to live our lives responsibly.
To deepen our devotion to the cross at any price.
Let us then be sober moving only in the spirit
As aliens and strangers in a hostile foreign land
The message we're proclaiming is repentance and forgiveness.
The offer of salvation to the dying race of man.
To love the lord our god, is the heartbeat of our mission.
The spring from which our service overflows.
Across the street or around the world.
The mission's still the same.
Proclaim and live the truth
In Jesus name!
As a candle is consumed
By the passion of the flame
Spilling light unsparingly
Throughout the darkened room.
Let us burn to know him deeper
Then our service flaming bright.
Will radiate his passions and blaze with holy light
