Hindalco

Mr.Bhrajjha
Geologist

 Hindalco captive bauxite mines are located in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh,

Maharashtra and Orissa which provide the raw material to their alumina
refineries located at Belgaum in Karnataka, Muri in Jharkhand and Renukoot
in Uttar Pradesh
 The total bauxite production of Hindalco is 4 million tonnes per annum
Sampling:
 Sampling is done manually using scoops
 Samples are taken from the trench using scoops
 The size of the extracted bauxite ore is 300 – 400 mm on an average
 The size of the sample varies between 25mm – 400 mm
 According to IS standards for sampling of bauxite, samples should be
collected from the ore size of less than 150 mm
 The total output of mine is around 8000 tonne / day
 The total quantity of sample collected is around 1600 kg / day

Problems related to equipments:

 In jaw crusher the face the problem of frequent worn out of jaw plates

Sample preparation
 Sample preparation is done in two stages using jaw crusher
 The first jaw crusher reduces the size from 300 mm to 100 mm
 While the second jaw crusher reduces the size from 100 mm to 25mm

Milling operation
 Grinding / milling operation is done using disc pulveriser
 Disc pulveriser reduces the size of the ore from 25mm to – 100 mesh
 In the sample stage the total quantity of sample collected is around 1600 kg,
in crusher it is reduced to 800 kg while the final quantity of sample taken to
analytical lab testing after pulverising is around 1 kg
 Cone crusher are used in aluminium refineries
 In Jharkhand mine they have 2 sample testing units which deploys 2 jaw
crusher and 1 pulverising mill in each testing units

 Hindalco has two sampling and sample preparation units in Jharkhand mine

Life of equipments:
 The average life of sample preparation equipments like jaw crusher,
pulverizer, ball mills varies between 15 - 20 years
 All their sampling and sample preparation are running good even after 10
years from the date of installation

Equipments needed by Hindalco in the near future:
 Hindalco is in the process of establishing Greenfield and brown field projects
near their captive mines for which there would be requirement of automatic
sampling machines
