 NALCO mine is located on the Panchpatmali hills of Koraput district in Orissa


 NALCO has a fully mechanized opencast mine of 4.8 million tpa capacity
 Transport of bauxite ore is done through 14.6 km long single flight multicurve
cable belt conveyor of 1800 tph
 NALCO is planning to further increase bauxite mining capacity to 6.3 million
tonnes under Second phase expansion.
 Of the total bauxite production of 14 million tonnes in 2009-10, Panchpatmali
bauxite mine of NALCO contributes about 35 % of the total production with a
production of about 4.5 million tonnes
 Mine is operated in three shifts per day; the average production per shift is
around 6000 - 7000 kg

Sampling:
 The size of the ore is 150 – 200 mm
 Sampling is done manually using scoops
 Samples are taken from the trench using scoops
 Quantity of sample collected during single scoop is around 100 kg
 Coning and quatering is done using riffle dividers

Sample preparation
 Sample preparation is done after coning and quartering
 Sample preparation is done using jaw crusher
 The jaw crusher reduces the size from 150 mm to 10 mm
 The total sample of 100 kg is reduced to 50 kg after crushing
 While disc grinding mill reduces the size from 10mm to 120 mesh
 The initial sample of 100 kg is reduced to 500 grams after final grinding using
disc mill which is taken to the internal laboratory for various tests
