Drugs
❑a medicine or other substance which has a
physiological effect when ingested or
otherwise introduced into the body.

❑Are any substance or chemicals which when


taken into the body either through the nasal,
oral, transdermal, or intravenous way.

Drug Abuse
– it is the use of chemical
substances licit or illicit which
results in an individual’s
physical, mental, or social
impairment.
General Signs of Drugs Abuse
• Sudden Changes in Behavior.
• Mood swings, irritable and grumpy, and then
suddenly happy & bright.
• Withdrawal from a family member.
• Careless about personal grooming.
• Loss of interest in hobbies, sports, and other
favorite activities.
• Changed sleeping pattern.
• Red or glassy eyes.
• Sniffy and runny nose.

Classification of Commonly
Abused Drugs
1.Stimulant
drugs that alertness and physical disposition.
ex. Amphetamine, cocaine
2. Hallucinogens
• drugs that affect sensation, self-awareness,
and emotions.

• It can be mild or overwhelming depending


on dose and quantity.

Ex. Marijuana, Mescaline


3. Sedatives
• Drugs that reduce anxiety and
excitement

ex. Barbiturates, tranquilizers, alcohol


4. Narcotics
• Drugs that relieve pain and often
induce sleep

Ex. Morphine, Heroin


Commonly Drug Abuse and
their Effects
1.Alcohol
- the most commonly used & widely
abused psychoactive drugs.

Ex. Beer, Wine, Liquor


Effects of Alcohol Abuse
• Reduce sensitivity to pain.

• Narrow the visual field, and reduce resistance to


glare.

• Interferes with the ability to differentiate intensities


of light.

• Reduce ability to make decisions.


2. Marijuana
- most frequently used illicit drugs in
America.

- it has the same or similar effects as


depressants, stimulants, and
hallucinogens
Effects of Marijuana
Abuse
• in heart rate, body temperature, and
appetite.

• Drowsiness

• Dryness of the mouth and throat.

• Reddening of the eyes.


3. Cocaine
- Powerful addictive
stimulant that directly
affects the brain.
Effects of Cocaine Abuse
• May cause extreme anxiety and
restlessness.

• Tremors, spams, coordination problem.

• Chest pain, nausea, and seizure.

• Respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest.


4. Methamphetamine
- is a powerful, highly addictive
stimulant that affects the central
nervous system.

- Drug used most frequently in


many Western & midwestern
states.
Effects of Methamphetamine
• wakefulness and physical activity.

• appetite.

• Interferes which the ability to


differentiate intensities of light.

• Reduce the ability to make decisions.


5. Heroin
- is an illegal addictive drug.

Effects of Heroin

• Surge of euphoria “rush” accompanied by a


warm flushing of the skin.
• Alternately wakeful and drowsy state.
• Impaired night vision, vomiting,
constipation.
6. Solvent / Inhalant

❑When snipped or inhaled, can produce


intoxications, excitement dulling of the
brain, and irrational behavior.

Ex. Rugby, Gasoline, Nail polish, acetone,


and lighter fluid.
How can we tell when one is Abusing Drugs
• Is often associated with known abusing drugs.
• Irritable, discourteous, aggressive.
• Trustworthy and lack self-confidence.
• Unhealthy and unconcerned with good
grooming.
• Lack of interest in his/ her studies or work.
• Blames everybody but not himself for his
problem.
• Develop changes in normal capabilities in
school/work.
