How to account for the use of prominence and tone.

Take into account that you have to explain

why you highlight one word/syllable over others (because of contrast, emphasis, semantic
load, etc.)

the selection of tone it could be given within the give and take of the conversation’ / context
(status of information, or convergence r/r+ - divergence p/p+/, or claiming of dominance:
r+/p+).

When accounting for the selected tones, we might decide on one of the following ideas:

Status of the information:

New information

Common ground

Feelings of closeness or distance

to appeal to the audience/ to call people’s attention: convergence. You sound convergent

to show distance, to sound aloof: divergence. You sound divergent.

Dominance

You claim dominance (only the dominant speaker).
