MY ATTEMPT TO CREATE A

PPT PRESENTATION
MARLENE S REINARTZ
Four Pillars of CT COMPUTATIONAL
THINKING
1 Decomposition
• Computational Thinking is the thought process
2 Abstraction involved in using algorithms to solve complex
problems.

3 Pattern
• The four pillars of Computational Thinking include:
Recognition • Decomposition
• Abstraction
4 Algorithmic • Pattern Recognition
Design • Algorithmic Design

DECOMPOSITION

• Decomposition involves breaking down a complex

problem or system into smaller, more manageable
parts.
• When creating the PBJ lesson plan, I used
decomposition to create the list of ingredients and
supplies. I also used decomposition to break down
the task into seven individual steps.
• This will help the students make sure they have all
of the necessary supplies and complete each step.

ABSTRACTION

• Abstraction involves focusing on the important

information only. In this way we ignore any
irrelevant details.
• In the PBJ lesson plan, I focused on the important
information and steps only. It was not necessary to
mention the brand of peanut butter/jelly, or what
type of bread to use, or the type of plate, etc.
• This will help the students to stay focused on the
relevant details only.

PATTERN RECOGNITION

• Pattern Recognition involves looking for

similarities or patterns among and within a
particular problem.
• When creating the PBJ lesson plan, I noticed that
each step took a particular amount of time. I also
noticed that the students would repeat a step
(spreading the peanut butter and spreading the
jelly).
• This will help the students to notice repetition
and patterns in the lesson plan.

ALGORITHMIC DESIGN

• Algorithmic Design involves developing a step-by-

step solution to a problem. This could also
involve using a particular set of rules to solve a
problem.
• When creating the PBJ lesson plan, I was able to
create a step-by-step plan for students to follow
so that they could reach the desired outcome.
• This will help each student follow the recipe to
reach the intended outcome.

REFLECTION

• What did you find challenging while creating the lesson plan?
-Being asked to teach students how to make a PBJ sandwich was deceptively simple. Thinking about how to
teach third graders how to complete this task, it helped me to apply the four pillars of computational thinking to
simply break the task down into smaller, more manageable steps.
• What surprised you about how the four pillars fit into your PB&J lesson plan?
-It was quite simple actually! In fact, I have begun to incorporate CT to approach and solve other types of
problems and challenges.
• How did this exercise help you to identify CT in your lesson plan?
-It was a simple, real-world example of how CT can be utilized to solve for both simple and complex problems.
