Training Hours Thursday- Friday (10:30- 12:00 noon)
Overview On 30th January 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the
COVID19 outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The
pandemic has now reached most countries around the world, with over
350,000 people dying of the respiratory illness as of 31st May 2021. The
global impact is potentially catastrophic. Estimating that unless recession is
averted in developing countries, an extra six to eight percent of the world’s
population could be pushed into extreme poverty (Oxfam, 2020). There are
particular and severe issues faced by poor populations in relation to the
pandemic. For instance, frequent hand-washing is difficult for families
without running water (Deitz and Meehan, 2019), while those in refugee
camps may struggle to socially distance (Van Bavel et al., 2020), and those
quarantined may struggle to find food as seen during Ebola outbreaks (Eba,
2014). Those in poverty are also associated with pre-existing medical
conditions that lead to higher rates of morbidity once infected, such as
chronic lung disease and immuno-suppression (Cockerham et al., 2017).
Within wealthier countries, there is also emerging evidence that the poorest
sections of society have been disproportionately affected (Godoy and Wood,
2020).
