Røros
Mining town from 1644 to 1977

World Heritage site ( from 1980 )

Old history for electric power supply in the area: mine company started first powerplant in 1896

Kuråsfossen ( 1896 ) 2x250 kW / 5 kV Røstefossen ( 1913 ) 2x500 kW / 10 kV

Røros:
5573 inhabitants

6800 customers

13 employees

Peak load 36.5 MW

Min. temperature: -50.3 ⁰C, that is -58.7 ⁰F

Project beginning: challenges of supply to the region

10 MW

Project for new 42 MW

64 MW hydro powerstation at
Tolga

Required upgrade from

66 kV to 132 kV from
55 MW Tynset
Schedule of project Røros 132 kV upgrade: 2010 – 2020

2015 01.07.2015 license from authorites for voltage upgrade 66 to 132 kV

2016 Final board decision: investment for upgrade from 66 kV to 132 kV

October 2017 – august 2020: Upgrade 35 km transmission line

October 2019 – september 2020: Construction of Røros Transformer station

Energization of GIS and transformers 9’th september 2020

2022/23 Demolition of old 66 kV part of the transformer station

Old outdoor substation built 1977, 16+25 MVA transformers
Why GIS and LPIT here at Røros for the new substation?

We have no limits on the size of transformerstation ( 30.000 m2 property ) – why indoors? Why GIS?

• LPIT:
• argument of both size of the GIS and material use
• New cool technology, the future of digital IOT
• First two years experience: no regrets choosing LPIT, no technological or protection problems with LPIT

• Questions marks about protection settings and testing during evaluation of contrect with Siemens ( new technology )
• Differential protection with LPIT on 145 kV side and conventional IT on 22 kV side
• Wischer function in 145 kV resonance grounded grid with small capacitance behind LPIT

• Visual impact in the area of station – local protection of old landscape: World Heritage Site
• Blue-GIS = low environmental impact GWP
• We are ISO 14001 sertified, demand for SF6 free installation, also for 22 kV switchgear

• Temperature challenges for outdoors equipment ( outdoor design temperature -43 ⁰C in Røros )
• HSE for our employees, no issues regaring gas- handling ( construction og leakages or faults )

Conventional CT and VT vs. NCIT
GIS 3D model with future expansion bay to Nea

One small regret about GIS-design: common LCC

for busbar and bay 2….extremely full LCC

Single busbar configuration due to position in the

grid and how the grid is operated.
