Importance of having science
education
• John Dewey (2001) stressed the importance of
utilizing the natural environment to teach students
• Marx (1994) “…science is going to be one of the most
important school subject in the future”
• Knight (1986) science education provides skills and
knowledge that are necessary for a person to live
• Tilghman (2005) science education describes as the
age of science and to develop a citizenry that will meet
the goals of science in the society

BASIC EDUCATION
• Science education helps students learn
important concepts and facts that are related
to everyday Science
• Science education develops positive attitude
• Science education will develop a strong
foundation for studying science-related
careers in the future
TERTIARY EDUCATION
• Science education deals with developing students’
understanding and appreciation of science ideas
and scientific works
• Science education also focuses on the preparation
of science teachers, scientists, engineers, and
other professionals in various science-related fields
such as engineering, agriculture, medicine, and
health sciences.

CHALLENGES FACED BY
SCIENCE EDUCATION
• Shortage of qualified science teachers
• Incongruent teaching assignments with teachers’
educational background
• Predominance of teacher-centered classrooms and
teaching practices
• Lack of quality textbooks
• The philosophy of science education at the basic
education level is not clearly defined and reflected
in the teacher education curriculum

HISTORY
• In 1998, by virtue of R. A. 8496, the PSHS System
was created to harmonize the operations of four
existing PSHS campuses: Diliman (Main Campus),
Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, and Southern
Mindanao.
• Three years later, R. A. 9036 was enacted to
establish one PSHS campus in every region in the
country that will provide a globally-competitive
education to a diverse population of Filipino youth.

Philippines
• administers an entrance
exam called “Manila Science
High School Admission Test”
• Manila Science High School is the
Philippines' pioneering special science high
school. Former President Ramon
Magsaysay envisioned the need for a
science high school in the Philippines. This
was underscored in his 1956 State of the
Nation Address for education with a stronger
thrust in science and technology.
