I. INTRODUCTION:

Globalization enhances the student’s ability and utilized knowledge.

Globalization meets the knowledge, education, and learning challenges and

opportunities of the information age. Knowledge based business often complain that

graduates lack the capacity to learn new skills and assimilate new knowledge.

As an all-embracing contemporary phenomenon, globalization has affected

almost all aspects of human life. With greater interdependence among nations,

groups and individuals, wealth has been enhanced through global trade and

investment but at the price of exposing vulnerable sectors to systematic risks and

uncertainties. Globalization is an irreversible reality of contemporary human life. It is

a complex and sometimes a paradoxical process. As it tries to integrate the global

village, at the same time, it breaks down traditional institutions. It has brought about

unequal consequences that even the efficiency gains are being challenged by

sectors that are hurt by the conduct of liberalization and deregulation of the

economy.

The negative effects of globalization not only on the productive sectors of the

economy also on the environment, health, education and society as a whole can no

longer be ignored. The key in understanding the fundamental drawback of

globalization is the uneven responses to the path of integration. These asymmetric

consequences that accompany it have created wide divides between those included

from those excluded in the globalization process.

The service sector is becoming the leading economic sector in the country

today. Close to half of the country’s gross domestic product is produced by services

and an equal proportion of the labor force is employed by the sector. With the

advancement in information technology, a move towards knowledge-based

industries, and the stiff competition globally, the role of trade in service will become

more and more prominent in the future. Educational services being a part of the

service sector, cannot escape the challenges of globalization.

II. OBJECTIVES:

a. Define globalization.

b. Observe globalization in education

III. CONTENTS ON TOPIC AND DISCUSSION:

WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION?

 Is the process of world shrinkage of distance getting shorter, things moving

closer. It pertains to the increasing case with which someday on one side of

the world can interact to mutual benefit with somebody on the other side of

the world (Thomas Larcson)

 According to WHO, globalization can be define as “the increased

interconnectedness and interdependence of peoples and countries. It is

generally understood to include two inter-related elements: the opening of

international borders to increasingly fast flow of goods and services, finance,

people and ideas; and the changes in institutions and policies at national and

international levels that facilitate or promote such flows.

 In simple words, globalization means the spreading of a business, culture or

any technology on an international level. When the boundaries of countries

and continents matter no more, and the whole world becomes one global

village in itself. Globalization is an effort to reduce the geographical and

political barriers for the smooth functioning of any business.

 The four main aspects of globalization are – Capital and Investment

movements, Trade and Transactions, Education and Spread of Knowledge,

along with Migration and unrestricted movement of people.

GLOBALIZATION IN EDUCATION

The impact of globalization on culture and educational system is a major

concern. Some people saw it as a treat for traditional institutions such as the family

and the school, another argument saw benefits in overturning traditional and

developing modern attitudes. This paper will analysis the positive and negative

impacts of globalization on education for developing countries. Effective education

system are the foundation of opportunities to lead a decent life. Ensuring that all

children have adequate access to education is essential public sector functions for

countries at all income level. The paper argues that education is a core element of

the society, and the foundation of democratic choice. The large differences in

opportunities in education between countries is one of the basic causes of global

inequality. People can only contribute and benefit from globalization if they are

endowed with knowledge, skills and values and with the capabilities and rights

needed to pursue their basic likelihoods.

IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION IN EDUCATION

 Globalization has improved the quality of education. Due to globalization,

countries got the opportunity to witness the best education systems worldwide

and thus could replicate them.

 New methods of learning such as e-learning, blended learning was quickly

adopted by many countries due to globalization.

 Due to globalization, foreign universities were established in developing

countries. These universities helped many students in getting a high-quality

education. Moreover, foreign investments in the education sector of

developing countries also helped in improving the facilities and infrastructure.

 Now more and more students are studying in colleges of other countries

through e-learning.

 As the number of foreign students is increasing at a rapid rate, several

countries are improving their quality of education and teaching practices

continuously.

 Education should develop empathy and understanding in students.

Globalization enabled students to develop an understanding of other cultures,

which is like a practical education.

 Due to globalization, many realised the importance of education and hence

literacy rates have improved worldwide.

 Globalization encouraged many countries to adopt alternative learning

systems such as homeschooling, distance education, world schooling etc.

 English is turning into the main medium instruction in many countries. These

are several debates going on about English dominance. Some people say

that it is better to teach English in the era of globalization, and some others

say that it negatively affects learning process of students.

 Many schools are now teaching global education. Moreover, in general,

students are more interested in learning and following modern blended culture

due to globalization. So, some people have fears about the extinction of local

languages and culture.

 Not everyone has access to quality education. The improved education due to

globalization is only beneficial for the rich and people of urban areas. There is

a huge gap between rich-poor and urban-rural areas in access to

educational opportunities. Globalization is further widening these gaps

because those who utilized the opportunities will improved their economic

status.
