DENYSE PARAISO BSED ENG-2

TASKS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED IN MODULE 1:

1. Share your understanding of the “Banking Method in Education” and why it
should be avoided nowadays. Note: Answer must not exceed four (4) valid
sentences.
-In my understanding banking method solely focuses on memorization as the
teachers are only one giving lessons, no one should be stuck trying to memorize
to pass a test but they should rather learn to develop skills that will help them
become the person they want to be. Although memorizing can be a useful skill,
that should not be what education is solely focused and centered around.
2. Explain in sentence why each education philosopher was associated with key terms:
 Paulo Freire – Critical pedagogy vs. banking system
- Freire’s critical pedagogy, or problem-posing education, uses a democratic
approach in order to reach the democratic ideal, and, in this sense, the goal
and the process are consistent. He explains how the teacher who intends to
hold herself at some higher level of power than that of her students, and who
does not admit to her own fallible nature and ignorance, places herself in rigid
and deadlocked positions. Instead of the banking method, Freire proposes a
reciprocal relationship between the teacher and the students in a democratic
environment that allows everyone to learn from each other.
 John Locke – Empiricist
- Locke believed the purpose of education was to produce an individual with a
sound mind in a sound body so as to better serve his country. He thought that
the content of education ought to depend upon one's station in life.
 John Dewey – Learning by Doing
- Learning by doing refers to a theory of education expounded by American
philosopher John Dewey. It's a hands-on approach to learning, meaning
students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn.
 George Counts – Building a new society
- He wanted teachers to go beyond abstract, philosophical conceptions of
democracy and teach explicitly about power and injustice. He wanted teachers
and students to count among their primary goals the building of a better social
order.
 Theodore Brameld – Social Reconstructionist
- He believed that education had the responsibility to mold human beings into
a cohesive and compassionate society.

3. With all the ideas presented in the video, cite two statements mentioned that
enlighten and inspire you to be a better teacher in the future.

“We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge but less judgments” from the
paradox of time hits me differently, as a future educator I must not forget where I
came from when I reached the time I can be called a professional, I must stand on the
ground low as I am also continuously learning, I must not have a condescending
attitude towards anybody from the future for I also commit mistakes as much as any
other persons do, in this way I can be a teacher who puts my shoe on my students
situation and understand them better than any other.
4. Make a table summary of the philosophies of education.
