QSDL TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES

• QATARDEBATE FORMAT

*Opposition team is the first to give a Reply Speech, followed by Proposition Reply

• SPEAKER ELIGIBILITY (From QD Tournament Rules booklet Section 10.3)

 Preparatory school is for individuals between Year 7 and 9 of school. No student


in their 10th or above year of school may participate in Preparatory School
competitions.
 Secondary School is for individuals between Year 10 and beyond of school. If a
school has debaters below year 10, they may participate in Secondary School
Competitions if they have not and will not participate in the Preparatory Schools
competition.
 Note for International Schools: A preparatory school speaker participating in a
secondary school league cannot take part in the preparatory school league for
that year. In the event that a speaker does, their scores will not be tallied in either
league and their team’s results will be treated the same as a Shadow Team.

• POINTS OF INFORMATION (POIs)

 May be a statement or a question.


 Can be offered only after the first minute and before the last minute of speaker’s
speech.
 May be offered only during a constructive speech, which means – the first 6
speeches. No POIs allowed during reply speech.
 Should not exceed 10-15 seconds.

• PREPARATION

 The preparation time for “Prepared rounds” is announced 20 minutes while for
“Impromptu rounds” is 30 minutes.
 Once motion is announced, nobody can further communicate with the debaters
in any way.
 Teams must not use the internet to research during preparation.
 Printed materials such as research done before the debate may be used.
 Reading from any materials, especially printed, is strongly discouraged, and will
negatively affect a speaker’s score.

• TEAMS & JUDGES REGISTRATION

 Every school may enter up to 3 teams (a total of 9 debaters, 3 on each team)


 We enforce the n-1 rule with regards to judges, which means:
o If a school wants to enter 2 teams, the school must bring 1
QatarDebate trained judge.
o If a school wants to enter 3 teams, the school must bring 2
QatarDebate trained judges.
o Every trained judge coming from your school must be available for
all rounds of the tournament.
