Warm-Up

What I think when I hear the word is pop culture it makes me think that the culture it is referring to is popular or
something, or that it is basically something that a lot of people do, or that could just be traditions and I'm getting the
words mixed up.

High Culture VS Pop Culture:

● It may seem obvious that there are a


multitude of cultural differences between societies in the world
● Do you prefer listening to opera or hip-hop music?
○ Do you like watching NASCAR or horse racing?
■ Do you read books of poetry or celebrity magazines
● Examples Of High Culture:
○ Attending a ballet seeing a play or listening to a live symphony performance
● Popular Culture
○ It refers to the pattern of cultural experiences & attitudes that exist in mainstream society]
● Pop culture events might include a parade, a baseball game, or the finale season of a TV show.

● Unlike high culture, popular culture is known and accessible


○ Although high culture may b4e viewed as superior to popular culture
● SubCulture:
○ A smaller cultural group within a larger culture
■ People of a subculture are a part of the larger culture
○ Some subcultures are formed by members who possess traits or preferences that differ
from the majority of a society's population
● Counter Culture:
○ countercultures, which are a type of subculture that rejects some of the larger culture’s
norms & values.

Cults
A word derived from culture, are also considered counterculture groups.

● Cultural Change:
○ Culture is always evolving.
■ Moreover, new things are added to material culture everyday, & they can affect
nonmaterial culture as well.

Subcultures Video

● Subculture is often said to be a culture within a broader mainstream culture


with its own separate values, practices and beliefs.
● Subcultures can be based on diverse factors including
where people live, shared interests, profession, age, ethnicity and religion.

● During the mid-1960s in the United States, the hippie subculture arose as a youth movement before it
rapidly spread worldwide.

➢ Inventions result when something ni is formed from existing objects or concepts
● Use them in place of older ways of carrying
out activities
● Relating to them than others
● As a way to carry out new kinds of activities
❖ CULTURAL LAG
➢ Time that elapses between the introduction of a new item material culture and its acceptance as
part of non mainstream culture
■ Cultural lag can also cause tangible problems.

❖ Diffusion & Globalization
➢ Another way material and non material cultures is through diffusion
➢ Globalization refers to the promotion and increase of interaction between different regions and
populations around the world
