How I Know You are the One

by monjudalji

Summary

Nayeon didn’t knew that the voice that once captured her heart will be the same voice that
will knot their ties together in two simple words. "I Do."

Notes

Been listening to Kodaline - “The One '' nonstop and thought of this one. Listening to it on
loop while reading is a must!! Also this is dedicated to someone, Happiest Birthday
weirdaydreamer! Still not sure if i got the fluff it takes but baby steps to leaving the angst
life ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Aaaaaand this is unbeta’d :<

Heavily inspired by the song:

Kodaline - The One

See the end of the work for more notes

November 5th, the most awaited day that they had spent months preparing for. It’s a widely known
wedding as both of them are hot shots from the music industry.
Keeping it private but not a secret.

Nayeon was a solo singer-songwriter until she met Mina whose voice strummed every string in her
heart. She’s a great composer, using her emotions as her pen, her feelings as the beat of every tune,
and now, Mina as the inspiration of her rhythm. Nayeon surely has captured everyone who listens
to her songs that are disguised as melodic poems for a certain Myoi Mina.

“You wrote a song for Mina?”, Chaeyoung, who was her co-producer, asks in their recording
booth.

“I did”, Nayeon tells her.

“We’ve been partners in this industry for years, but it’s surprising for you to write a song for
specifically someone”, Chaeyoung squints her eyes as she looks at the lyrics sheet, suspicious of
what Nayeon has been up to.

“‘Depend on You’… This clearly says alot about how you feel for her unnie”

“It’s just a song that’s originally mine but I imagined her voice singing it…”, Nayeon defends
herself

“I won’t be surprised if you had already imagined her walking down the aisle”, she chuckles.

Nayeon just smiled, it’s surely an enchanting scene to see such an immaculate beauty walking
towards her as they knot their ties together.

But she can’t.

She shouldn’t.

“You know my parents are not in favor of who I am, besides, I can’t bring Mina to share the
problems I have”, Nayeon tries to smile.

Just the thought of it is enough. It’s enough already because that imagination is with Mina.

[...]
Somebody told Nayeon that if she suddenly thought of someone while working normally on
something, that’s the moment she had already fallen head over heels for that someone.

“That’s a lot of coffee for the team”, Jihyo was shocked seeing Nayeon enter the room with the
whole Starbucks menu in her hand.

“Is that for me, unnie?”, Dahyun was about to get her favorite drink before she was stopped by
Nayeon

“Wait, do you know what Mina likes?”, she asks

“Probably you”, Tzuyu says

Nayeon is trying to stop her own mouth from slowly reaching both ends of her ears but
Jeongyeon’s tease didn’t let her.

“How whipped are you to order every single coffee instead of asking her what she wants?”

“Grapefruit honey black tea”, Dahyun tells her.

Nayeon hurriedly looks for it and thankfully she finds one.

“Now, everything is all yours, give the other employees drinks too”, Nayeon smiles at them before
rushing out the room.

But she suddenly went back inside moments after as she handed the drink to Dahyun, “Can you be
the one to give it to her instead?”

Dahyun looks at her unimpressed, “I’ve already done my part in telling you her favorite unnie, get
your pussy self out of here”

“Unnie just leave it outside her door but make sure to make her know that it came from you”
Chaeyoung suggested.

Nayeon suddenly thinks of something, “Do you have a marker with you Chaeng?”
“I always do, why?”

“Teach me how to draw a minguin in this cup”

As soon as Mina heard a knock in the practice room she’s rehearsing, she saw the drink at the
doorstep. She took it as she looked left and right down the hallway to see whom it came from.

But there was no one.

She stares at the cup and finds a sloppily drawn penguin in its lid. It definitely can’t be Chaeyoung,
she doesn’t draw this bad. But it’s cute and lovely, who would’ve thought to put this here? There’s
only one person that Mina has in her mind.

[Minari 9:30 AM]

Thank you Nayeonie, I’ll drink this well ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

[Nabong 9:35 AM]

You’re welcome Mina :)

Apparently, it took Nayeon 5 whole minutes trying to come up with a reply from her simple
message.

[...]

Mina must’ve been a witch for instantly enchanting Nayeon with just her voice, because the
moment she heard those few words from Mina’s mouth, it got into her ear as it lingered in her mind
for months, never letting even a syllable become unheard from her memory.

“Unnie, we’ll be eating out, wanna join?”

“Is Mina coming too?”

Dahyun lets out a teasing smile, “Maybe? Maybe not?” she chuckles.

“I’m gonna break your precious Yamaha PSR-E373 keyboard apart”, Nayeon threatens her.
“No! Not my baby, and she’s there already, you possessive coward”, Dahyun tries to hide her
laughter

Nayeon squints her eyes intently with the image of removing each black and white key playing
inside her mind.

“Truth hurts right unnie?”

“No, truth makes me angry”, Nayeon cracks her neck as she stands up and goes towards Dahyun.

“Hey, hey, hey, where are you going?”, Dahyun got scared for her precious piano.

“Aren’t we gonna eat lunch together?”

The sudden realization hits her with a sudden nervous laughter. Dahyun clings her arm on
Nayeon’s making sure she doesn’t go somewhere else.

Nayeon was a sleep deprived and stressed out producer behind the cameras but she always makes
sure to conceal it for her fans. Eating is her go to destressor and it became her hobby but damn,
why does the usual food she orders tastes better when she’s sharing it with Mina?

“I can’t believe your voice sounds good with how spicy your favorites are, Nayeon”, Mina grabs a
glass of water to ease out her scorched tongue

“It’s not even that spicy yet, they should’ve put more sauce on it,'' Nayeon smirks.

Tzuyu suddenly coughs from the other side of the table, “show off”

“Hey, don’t bust out Nayeon unnie trying to impress Mina”, Chaeyoung eyes at her teasingly

“Sorry my cough is bad, I should’ve taken meds earlier”

Nayeon gives them the you-won't-see-sunrise-tomorrow kind of look. But her eyes suddenly turned
into crescent moon shaped eyes as soon as she heard Mina giggling beside her.
She turns her head towards Mina, she sees a gummy smile that glows right in front of her.

Mina looks back at her as their gazes meet in one plane. NASA clearly misses out on exploring a
hidden galaxy hidden within Mina’s eyes. Whenever she looks at Nayeon, all the stars align in a
unique pattern of constellations forming out the words, ‘I have feelings for you too’.

The tension between them is clearly louder than the big bang, but even if that explosion is just a
theory; what Nayeon has proven herself is that Mina is the One for her.

Mina raises her hand as she places it at both sides of Nayeon’s neck. She leans forward and gives
her a quick kiss on the cheek, “You are impressive enough for me, you don’t need to burn your
tongue”, she chuckles.

Nayeon was clearly flabbergasted with Mina’s sudden action, “Why did, why-”, she stutters

“There was a crumb on your cheek”, Mina adorably lies.

Nayeon tries to hide her smile feeling embarrassed with what just happened.

Chaeyoung suddenly wipes a sauce from her pasta in her cheek as she offers it to Tzuyu, expecting
the latter to do what they just saw.

But instead, Tzuyu did something else, “here’s a tissue, I don’t like the taste of pasta”, she wipes it
down for her.

Chaeyoung pouts with the savage anti-romantic gesture that her lover did but she still loves her
anyways. Meanwhile, Dahyun who’s the 5th wheel in this table was enjoying every moment she’s
seeing.

She knows how Nayeon secretly feels for Mina and she also knows how Mina shyly likes Nayeon
back.

Dahyun moves a plate towards them with her smile wide open, “Unnie, there are more crumbs
here, do it again.”

[...]
They are slowly getting close to each other like there was no physical distance separating their
feelings in between. Mina is Japanese, and every year she goes home for vacation, but being 926
km apart from each other didn’t hinder Nayeon to always think of her. The weather they are
experiencing may be different but it’s Mina who makes Nayeon’s heart feel like it’s summer even
if the rain is pouring down.

And... to whoever made phones, Nayeon will be forever grateful for them.

“Asleep already?”Nayeon gave her a call

“Not yet, I just miss you already”, Mina says back

“How’s the weather there, are you holding the heat pack I gave you?”

“It’s storming here, I’m just cuddling with Ray in bed”

“It must’ve been nice to be Ray at this moment”,

Mina just chuckled at her, “Is it raining in Seoul too? Why is Kookeu barking so loudly at the
background?”

“I’m not sure if it’s raining in Seoul…”

“Are you not home yet? Is there something wrong with the company? It’s late already, Miss Im,
continue that tomorrow.”

She can clearly hear how Mina sulks at her.

“I’m actually not at work… but it’s raining hard in Kobe Prefecture.”

Mina gasps. “Are you-”

“Look outside”, Nayeon giggles.

The next thing Nayeon heard was loud footsteps rapidly going down the steps to open the door.
She’s greeted with Mina wearing her casual clothes inviting her to quickly come inside.
“Why are you-, what- why, since when did you? Kookeu too?”

Nayeon engulfs her in a hug, “I missed you”

Those three words were enough for Mina to clear her thoughts of worries as she embraced her
back in a warmth that no summer can ever radiate, “We’ve just been apart for two weeks but I
really miss you too.”

They are prepared to spend the rest of the night just in each other’s arms but Kookeu is already
clinging on Mina’s leg. She sits down to play with the little pomeranian, and hearing from
Kookeu’s bark, salivating mouth and wagging tail, it represents Nayeon herself whenever she’s
with Mina.

Kookeu likes Mina.

Just like how his mother really likes her.

Nayeon pulls out a bouquet as she knows Ray always loved sniffing flowers. He’s old already but
she will always make him feel that he’s still loved by everyone. Nayeon knows how this dachshund
made Mina’s nosebleed because of extreme happiness.

And Nayeon takes care of Ray making sure he feels all the love he deserves

Just like how she wants his mother to feel it from her.

Nayeon really can’t stand just hearing Mina through the phone, even if they are at each end of the
globe, she’ll always find a way to be with her. A day long tiring flight is enough to suffice if it
means she’ll see Mina’s grin, if it means she’ll hear Mina’s giggles, if it means she’ll get to feel
the warmth of Mina’s touch.

'Cause Nayeon knew the first day that she met Mina, she was never gonna let Mina slip away. She
was nervous that time, she only knew Mina by her voice but now they are silently cuddling as they
drift to sleep together with their fur babies at each of their sides
[...]

It’s been years already, Nayeon remembered how she just wanted to hear Mina’s voice again but
she ended up recognizing her smile.

And that’s the smile that she wanted to be the cause of, even if that means she’ll die of being
nervous with what’s about to happen next.

“Nayeon unnie, i know you are not a chicken, live up to it okay?”, Momo tells her over the phone.

“You got this Nayeon! You know where Momo and I are, it’s either we’ll get drunk because you’re
busted or we’ll get drunk celebrating!”, Sana’s excitement can be heard in the background.

“And remember, this is about you and Mina okay? Don’t think about your parents for a second.”,
Momo assures her.

“Thank you for helping me prepare this, I really owe the both of you alot”, Nayeon’s trembling
voice is clearly heard on the line.

“Calm down unnie, inhale exhale.”

Nayeon chuckles, “don’t worry, I got this, it’s just a simple question”

“Not when her answer is a nerve wracking one!”

“We’re already here, I’ll talk to the both of you later.”

They reached a fancy restaurant situated on a rooftop. Dim lights dangling over a table of two with
candle flames on each side, a lovely classical tune of the violin setting the melody of romance in
the air, a one of a kind view of the night life at Japan, and a cool breeze that conceals the trembling
knees that Nayeon feels at this very moment. Everything is perfect.

And with Mina by her side, it’s even better.

“Why are there no other customers here?”, Mina asks.

“I-, I don’t know- too, yeah, no clueless, i mean I have no clue”

Mina chuckles at her, “You are a terrible liar, babe”

Nayeon scratches her neck as she shifts her look somewhere else. “Let’s eat first.”

They were served with a gourmet dish that they always order, their favorites in both Japanese and
Korean dishes. With every chew that Nayeon does is a loud thump from her heart skipping a beat
as she practices her lines inside her head. But whenever she looks at Mina in front of her,
everything just goes blank, her world becomes silent, her mind stagnantly calms down.

Mina is the epitome of solace, even if Nayeon is known for her loud voice and megaphone
laughter, she’s calm whenever Mina is near.

Their dinner ended with both of them full of every delicacy on their plate, but there’s still one more
that Nayeon wants her to try, the taste of love.

Standing at the edge of the balcony, Nayeon wraps her hand around Mina’s waist as she rests her
chin on the latter’s shoulder. And as soon as Mina feels Nayeon’s touch, it’s an automatic response
for their fingers to intertwine with each other. Mina rests her head against Nayeon temple as she
brings up her hand to kiss Nayeon’s back palm.

Nayeon’s heart has been beating out of her nervousness earlier but now, her heart swells as an
enormous amount of love rushes to every vessel she devotes to Mina. There’s so much love she
wants to make her feel, and thankfully forever is enough, it’s a long time she wouldn’t mind
spending by her side.

Nayeon disentangles from her hug as she faces Mina. Still holding her hands, she looks intently on
her eyes. It took her just one sight from the latter to forget everything she’s about to do. But it’s
now or never, it’s like a life and death situation, where it’s literally I do or I die.

She’s still nervous and she doesn’t remember the lines that she had practiced earlier but she knows
she’ll instantly find the words to get her today.

“Mina… The first time I heard you, out of all the melodies I have ever listened to, your voice is the
loveliest. No song could ever sound better whenever it’s you who calls for my name. I’ll replace
the birds chirping each morning with your giggles that I hear everytime I wake up.

How you hum a single note every time I call for you is enough to make me fall in love again and
again.
Those eyes that never fail to make me feel loved, those ears that always listen to what I wanted to
say, that mouth that always tells me what I wanted to hear every time. It’s you, it’s always you who
I want to see every morning, it’s you who I want to be with all day, it’s you who I want to be with
the last time each night.

I’m sorry I said a lot of words, I- I just, I don’t know how to say it without making it into a song
but,

Mina Sharon Myoi, will you marry me?”

Nayeon brings out a box with a ring inside that perfectly fits Mina’s ring finger.

Mina was awestruck, her eyes trembling in each syllable that Nayeon had said.

She just looks at her and Nayeon was scared that Mina doesn’t want to accept her proposal but
even if Mina saw it coming, she just couldn’t translate her happiness into words, she’s never been
this happy in her whole life that she didn’t know how to verbally express it.

As her diamond tears fell from her cheek, she suddenly jumped out to Nayeon for a tight hug.
Nayeon nearly loses grip from the box of ring she was holding but she was fast to hold on to it. Just
like how Mina quickly and genuinely reciprocated her unsaid feelings since the first time they had
met. Just like how they are really meant to be for each other.

“YES”, Mina squealed as she nodded her head while hugging Nayeon.

Nayeon places her hands on Mina’s waist and at the crown of her head as she buries herself deep
into her shoulders. They spent their time immersed in each other, feeling all the love, all the
desperation and all the longingness to spend the rest of their days together.

Mina pulls apart and offers her hand, Nayeon takes the ring out of the box and slowly slides it on
her ring finger.

“I love you, Mina”

“I’ll love you more for the rest of my life”, she replies

They both wipe their tears away as they lean on each other for a kiss.

A kiss from the lips which uttered the voice that made Nayeon fell in love

[...]

The only thing that’s left is the blessing from Nayeon’s parents. Mina knows her struggles that
nearly made Nayeon back out from confessing her feelings. But she isn’t alone in this situation,
because this love is true, and it’s the love that’s worth fighting for.

“How dare you even show up in front of us again”, Nayeon’s father disappointingly tells her.

“Dad, please.”

“Mom?”

Nayeon’s mom was behind her dad, looking so worried for her. “Let’s go inside, honey, let’s talk
about this, okay?”

Mina can feel how Nayeon was both scared and courageous at this very moment. Nayeon tells her
to not intervene as she’ll try to circle her way for her parents to accept who she really is and what
they really are.

“Nayeon we missed you, come home more often okay?”, her mom worryingly smiles at her.

“Say in advancem when you’ll be coming again so I’ll know when I’ll go somewhere else”, her
dad angrily throws her a serious look.

“Dad, are you still angry that I didn’t want the suitors you’ve set up with me in the past? When
will you accept the fact that I don’t like guys?”, Nayeon respectfully retaliates.

“honey , that’s not true, your dad-”

“Never. I never had a daughter like you.”

Those words struck a dissonance on Nayeon’s chord. To say that it still hurts is an understatement.
Being disowned by the people you once called family, not being accepted by who you truly are, it
feels like she hasn’t proven herself enough from them amidst the success she had achieved.

“Did you truly love me for who I am? Or for who you want me to be? I’m not some kind of puppet
whose strings you can easily pull Dad.”, Nayeon tearfully tells him.

“You keep on telling me that it’s a sin to love someone whose gender is the same as I am, but how
is it a sin when I became a better person when I met Mina?”, she added to them.

Mina holds Nayeon’s shaking hands, letting her say everything she had kept inside her heart for all
these years she had been deprived of the love from her parents.

“Mina made me feel the love I didn’t get from you, and because of her I became stronger, I
became more understanding of you…”, a tear fell from her eye.

Her dad sighs, “Nayeon I just want what’s good for you”

Those words didn’t make any sense, and Nayeon is emotionally drained to deal with it. “We just
came by to give you an invitation for our wedding but I guess I’ll find somebody else to fill in those
chairs, I’ve allotted for my parents.”

“We’ll be leavin-”

“Mr. Im.”, Mina finally speaks up.

“I may not be the one you expected for your daughter, but would you rather settle for those guys
who had broken your daughter’s heart? I love her just like how you love your wife, sir. And if you
want what’s good for your daughter, I’m the best you ever got for her.”, Mina didn’t stutter in
every word she had uttered in front of Nayeon’s parents.

Mina interlocks their fingers tightly, not even letting her parents break their marriage apart.
Her dad just stared at nothing, not being able to answer back. It became their cue to leave.

On their way out, Nayeon’s mom stops them midway.

“Honey, just give your dad time please? I’m so sorry you don’t deserve to feel this way, but mom is
here for you, okay? I love you just the way you are…”, she gave Nayeon a kiss on her forehead.

“Mina?”

“Yes Ma’am?”

Nayeon’s mom gave her a hug, “Thank you for being there for Nayeon, I want to know you better,
and don’t worry about her dad, i’ll give him a good amount of mouthful talk.”, she smiles at her.

“I’m proud of you Nayeon.”, her mom brushes her hair which made Nayeon burst into tears on her
Mom’s chest.

Meanwhile, Mina can see her dad looking at the window trying not to shed a tear away. As soon as
he sees Mina, he tries to hide and looks away from them.

Love really is not about finding the person, it’s about building the right relationship with whoever
you wish to spend the rest of your life with. In hopes of one day, we won’t be needing to come out
of the closet, we’ll just say we are in love and that is all that will ever matter.

But that day isn’t today yet. Nayeon still seeks acceptance from her parents because she loves
them, and she wants them to fully and truly accept Mina as well. It was by far the day that Nayeon
was always trying to avoid, she’s scared of confronting her parents about that matter.

Life is easy to be scared of, but whenever Nayeon is with Mina, she’ll always be prepared for what
is yet to come. Because two hearts will make it easy, joining up the pieces together, making them
one strong pair that’s ready to face the judgemental reality of the world.

[...]

November 5th, 2021.

The biggest day they’ve been preparing for months has finally come.

A garden wedding at the beach of Hawaii, full of the color of white symbolizing how pure their
love is towards one another, how hopeful they are for this next chapter they’ll be partaking in
together, how simple they want it to be. Because they only want one thing in life, each other.

But there’s one more thing for Nayeon to settle by.

“Nayeon?”, someone knocks on her door.

“Come in”

She turns around and sees two familiar faces she didn’t expect to see.

Nayeon wasn’t able to greet as both of them suddenly embraced her as tight as they could.

“I’m sorry Nayeon, Dad is really sorry”, she heard his sniffles behind her back.

Her mom is at her side, hugging both of them, patting them at their backs. “I’m sorry you
experienced that Nayeon, we should’ve been better parents for you.”

Nayeon just tears up at the sight of them attending her big day. No matter how much they hurt her,
family will remain as family for her even if it loses its essence.

“Thank you for not giving up on us, Nayeon, please let Dad get back the days that we lost together,
okay?”

Nayeon nods at him as she wipes her tears away.

“I love you Nayeon, I will forever be proud that you are my daughter.”

It’s really the best day that she anticipated to come by. No matter how plenty or few the guests are,
nor how simple or grand the wedding is, nor where it is located, as long as Nayeon sees Mina
walking down the aisle, it will always be her dream wedding.
Like the first time she had ever heard her voice

Like the first time she had ever seen her face

Like the first time she had ever met her

Nayeon has fallen for her once again.

Her eyelids are already puffed from crying earlier because of her parents but seeing Mina’s beauty
made her cry more for an unknown reason. She must’ve been so pretty it hurts so much.

Mina walks across the aisle like a graceful swan landing in a calm pond, surrounded with the
brightest smiles on every face she passes by. Nayeon stares at her like she’s the only one present in
this event. Tears are constantly flowing down her face with every beat of her heart syncing with
the rhythm of love.

Her eyes never left Mina’s gaze until she arrived at her side. Her heart has been screaming Mina's
name in the highest pitch that it can ever reach. The wedding ceremony feels like a musical theater
for Nayeon, a harmonious sonnet that no classical piece can ever write in the history of romantic
ballads.

And what better way for Nayeon to tell her vows is through a song she wrote for Mina.

For better or for worse

I know we'll have our disagreements

Be fighting for no reason

I wouldn't change it for the world

'Cause I knew the first day that I met you

I was never gonna let you

Let you slip away

And I still remember feeling nervous

And tryna find the words to

Get you here today

Life it's easy to be scared of

With you, I am prepared for what is yet to come

When we are together, you make me feel

Like my mind is free and my dreams are reachable

You know I never ever believed in love

I believed one day that you would come along

You make my heart feel like it's summer

When the rain is pouring down

You make my whole world feel so right when it's wrong

That's how I know you are the one

That's why I know you are the one

She didn’t know that the voice that captured her heart will be the same voice that will knot their
ties together in two simple words.

I Do.

You may now kiss the bride.

A kiss to seal the end of a measure they are composing together.

A kiss to start another song they’ll endlessly sing for one another.

[...]

“What’s this?”, Mina asks as Nayeon hands her a gift box for their honeymoon.

“Open it, it’s for the both of us”, she giggles.

What’s inside was a pair of earrings, with a microphone design.

“It’s really not obvious that we are singers”, Mina chuckles as they both wear one at each side of
their ear.

“Even if I’m not on stage, even if i’m not wearing an in-ear piece, even if i don’t have a mic, that
thing on your ear, that’s my way of promising that you’re the only one I’ll sing love songs for
Mina”, Nayeon rests her head on Mina’s shoulder and the latter leans on the crown of her head.

Nayeon links their arms together as she raises Mina’s hand. She imagines clefs and trebles written
in Mina’s palms, succeeded with the number of beats, Nayeon writes a loop of melodic tune in
each measure producing an alluring symphony with the theme of their story.

“Are you writing our next song already?”, Mina asks.

Nayeon embedded the last note at the edge of her palm, “I wrote you a romantic one”

Mina smiles at her, “You forgot to put a whole note rest before the double bar at the end.”

Nayeon buries her head deeper as she drifts into solace, “You are already my rest.”

They intertwined their fingers together, sealing yet another bop that’s about to be released.

“Does it have a title already?”

Nayeon looks at her like she’s the only person left in this world.

“Fall in Love Again.”

Tomorrow is another day for Nayeon to fall head over heels again like the first time she had felt
baby blue love. “I’ll depend on you even if it makes me go crazy in love with you”.

Because even if the rain is pouring down, she sees a rainbow in Mina 24/7.

That's how Nayeon knew Mina is the One.
