Statement of Purpose

I am Mohit Rudraraju Suresh, and I am very pleased to have an opportunity to submit my

Statement of Purpose to pursue higher education at the University of Melbourne in Victoria,
Australia. Education always did matter to me as it made me evolve into a better version of
myself. It is and always will be an inevitable path for me to gather knowledge from everywhere
possible to become successful. Right from the time I was a kid, I was brought up in an
atmosphere of noble moral values and I have become a person who embraces them for the
gratification of everyone around me. My family will be the one who pledges to sponsor me for
my higher studies for which I would be always grateful for their support.

My Previous Study:-
I earned my Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science Engineering from Hindustan Institute
of Technology and Science, Chennai, India in the year 2020 with an aggregate of 9.05 out of 10
and embarked on my career path in computer science. For me, the foundation for computer
science was laid during my school days at The Velammal International School where I
completed my 10th grade with 9.4 CGPA in 2014 and my 12th in 2016 with 75 percent. Tennis
was a huge part of my younger days, I had represented my school in various inter school
competitions and brought back many medals and trophies. I benefited a lot from playing tennis, it
taught me to be open minded. I plan to develop my career with a broad mindset, learn and
understand new technologies and implement my strengths in the fast upgrading world.

English proficiency:

I have taken IELTS exam in the month of May 2022 and my overall score is 7.5 with Listening
7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 7.0, and Speaking 8.5.

Employment:-
After I had completed my undergraduate program, I had joined SK Foods company as the
Executive Incharge in February 2022 which is based in Chennai city. SK Foods is a trading
company dealing with raw food material supply to industrial caterers. My motivation to join this
company was to experience the growth of this startup by implementing my knowledge in current
technologies into a brick-and-mortar business. My duties were to implement an inventory
software to make the shift from traditional excel sheets to a modern platform. I also played a part
in taking key business decisions, I was able to understand the food material market a better by
visualizing data. Some of these changes helped the company understand the market with more
insights and data to back our decisions. The director of SK Foods is also the director of the
school I graduated from - Velammal Group of Schools. Mr. Sasikumar, the director, was my
mentor in school, he had given me the opportunity to work at SK Foods after I had finished my
undergraduate program to polish my skills and implement change to modernize the business. I’ve
been reporting to The Business Head, Mr. Srinath Mohan, srinath@vblive.co. I have informed
my employer as well about my resignation in Jan 2023, to undertake higher studies, which they
have accepted. They also have promised me a place in the organization upon my return to
Chennai if I wish to do so.

My Interest towards studying Master of Data science:-

Many entrepreneurs in the early days of the internet revolution followed their gut feeling and
believed it would change the world, it wasn't as hard to be successful back then as compared to
today. To be triumphant in a modern and competitive environment is perplexing. I had always
wanted to become a scientist when I was young, inspired by space, computers, and technology, I
always had an interest towards a developing field. As I grew older, my passion concentrated into
mathematics and coding when I pursued my bachelor's degree in computer science engineering. I
was always fascinated by the potential computers had to change everyone's lives. Computer
science applications are endless, they can be found in the industries of entertainment,
manufacturing, transportation, and so many more. The evolution from the first computer to
today's supercomputers showed me the pace at which the world is changing. Technology does
not automatically improve, it is developed when a lot of people work really hard, many people
including myself knew the importance of computer technology when so many recent
developments were achieved in this field. I had been given exposure to data science in my
college days which inspired me to gain knowledge on this field even more. I want to pursue my
masters in data science because of the impact it has made in the world in recent days and the
potential for its development.

Reason for choosing The University of Melbourne:-

Australia is one of the best countries in the world, with a hugely diverse culture. It has always
been my dream to take up my master's in data science at a top university. The University of
Melbourne assuredly is one of the best universities in Australia and the world, where I can
persistently develop myself and achieve my goals. The University of Melbourne swanks one of
the best data science programs in the world, with its prominent faculty and elite coursework
consisting of core subjects and real-world driven electives to choose from along with a project
that makes you industry ready, studying there will give me a chance to improve on my abilities
and engage in advanced research alongside students from all different countries and
backgrounds, which will open up a whole new perspective in my career. It is clear to me, that
were I to remain in India for my graduate studies, I would be relatively limited in terms of
diversity and quality of facilities. In contrast, the master of data science program at the
University of Melbourne can give me the sort of technical knowledge and personal growth that I
am looking for at this stage of my career. I have thoroughly gone through and successfully met
the requirements for entry to the university’s master of data science programme. The course is a
200-point programme consisting of 3 core statistics subjects(37.5 points), 3 core computer
science subjects(37.5points), elective subjects(50 points), data science or professional skills
subjects or a research project(50 points) and a capstone data science project(25 points). The
career outcomes of the programme are also aligned with my interests. I will be equipped with
sound knowledge of modern statistical methodology and computing that will equip me for my
career in data science and enable my future as data science evolves. I will also utilise and be well
beyond the limit of part time working hours for an international student during my study at the
University as my top priority is to gain more academic knowledge.

Reason for Choosing Australia over other countries: -

I had to choose between the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Australia for my
masters. The primary factors that had me narrow down to Australia was the quality of living,
safety and diverse culture. Melbourne is also the sports capital of Australia, this meant I could
experience the Australian open, Albert Park Grand Prix and many cricket matches throughout
my stay there. In my home town, Chennai, I am used to warm and humid weather, UK is much
cooler and it was not somewhere I would enjoy adapting to. Safety and quality of life was also
my top priority and there was no other place in my mind than Melbourne. A younger population
and diverse culture meant good food and a welcoming community, making it easy for me to
adapt and experience the beautiful city much more. Combining a great city with one of the best
university in the world helped me unquestionably choose The University of Melbourne.
Accommodation:
I have planned to stay close to the University of Melbourne in a semi-furnished shared
apartment, I have look into few accommodation provider. The rent per week approximately will
cost me between AUD 250-300.

Reason for not choosing home country for higher studies: -

I have started looking for the universities in India where I can do master’s program. I have come
with the few options. The good, ranked universities are having less seats in number hardly 20 to
25 whereas in the average universities are having only basic requirements of 50% and there is no
limit of the student per class. It was confusing for me which one to go ahead with. In Indian
universities lots of attention is given to theory and books when comes to practical knowledge is
very less focused. Practical learning is very important to develop skills to meet industry
requirements. I have come across Australian education system which focus more on practical
learning which I have to develop on to have a better job prospect in the future.

About my Family:-

My father is into flower business (florist) since 1991 in Chennai. He had completed his Bachelor
of commerce degree after which he decided to start his business. At that time, there were very
few competitors while demand for fresh flowers was high in Chennai motivating my father to
start his first store in Alwarpet. The name of the organisation is S.S Florist. We are a family of 3,
me, my sister and my father since my mothers passing in 2019, my sister is in her final semester
of her MBA degree at the University of Madras. My father currently takes care of the florists and
manages events decorations. He will be my sponsor for my tuition and stay in Australia. Me my
sister and I have a very close relationship, I would want to spend my life as close to them as
possible, upon completion of my course in Australia, I would be spending my days close to my
loved ones in Chennai.

Financial stability -
My father is sponsoring my education. His annual income for the financial assessment year
2022-2023 is Rs. 8,28,260. He has savings of Rs. 20,69,555 in IDFC First Bank and I have
availed Education loan for Rs. 36,27,773 from IDFC First Bank with my father’s support from
which the Tuition fee deposit of Rs. 10,40,076 paid to The University of Melbourne to confirm
my offer acceptance.
.

Value of Master degree and Opportunities in India:-

I strongly believe that data science can benefit new businesses and almost every industry to make
pivotal decisions for its prosperity. After my graduation, I intend to return to India where I wish
to do my part in developing my nation. There are companies such as Zoho, Freshworks, Tata
Consulting Services and many more which have prominent data science, Business Intelligence &
Software Engineer roles. Chennai is quickly becoming one of India’s startup hubs where I wish
to use my experience and knowledge gained during my time in Australia, to constantly learn and
develop myself at these promising companies. The average pay package for a data scientist in
India 12-15 lakh minimum which is bound to go up as the government is developing the state
and country at a rapid rate. The opportunities in India are rising drastically as many multinational
companies such as Apple have focused investments in my home nation. I strongly believe that
India will give me many career options in the field of Data Science upon my arrival. I surely will
be coming back to my country as I have my family and long terms development goals for my
career as well making contributions to the land that has supported my family and loved ones in
Chennai, India.

My Previous international travel history

I have travelled to Singapore and Dubai for vacation, travelling to a new country naturally makes
me somewhat nervous, but, I am mainly excited to take on this new and exciting challenge. I
have no plans to remain in Australia for the long term and promise to respect the local laws and
be a responsible student and entrant in the country.
