Local Area Network – Consists of a series of computers linked together to form a network in a

circumscribed location.

- is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence,
school, laboratory, university campus or office building.

Metropolitan Area Network – a computer network that connects computers within a metropolitan area,
which could be a single large city, multiple cities, and towns, or any given large area with multiple
buildings.

- is a computer network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic

region of the size of a metropolitan area.

Modem -

Modular Hubs - A network hub that is configured by adding different modules, each supporting a
topology, such as Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, etc.

Multimedia is a form of communication that uses a combination of different content forms such as text,
audio, images, animations, or video into a single interactive presentation,

Network A computer network is a set of computers sharing resources located on or provided by network
nodes.

Network Server Network servers are dedicated computers connected to a network that run software
intended to process client requests and provide appropriate responses.

Network Switch A network switch forwards data packets between devices. Switches send packets
directly to devices, rather than sending them to networks like a router does.

Peers - In networking, a peer is a node that provides the same functionality as another. For example,
two desktop PCs in a network are peers.

Protocol - A network protocol is an established set of rules that determine how data is transmitted
between different devices in the same network.

Repeater A repeater is implemented in computer networks to expand the coverage area of the network,
repropagate a weak or broken signal and or service remote nodes.

RJ 45 is a standardized telecommunication network interface for connecting voice and data equipment
to a service provided by a local exchange carrier or long distance carrier.

Router - A router is a device that connects two or more IP networks or subnetworks.

Server is a computer program or device that provides a service to another computer program and its
user, also known as the client.

Software is a set of computer programs and associated documentation and data.

Stackable Hubs A type of Ethernet hub that can be expanded by daisy-chaining additional hubs together
via dedicated ports for that purpose. They are designed to stack vertically and be treated as a single
domain by the network management software.

Standalone Hubs box-like products with a number of ports, typically fewer than 12. Many standalone
hubs also can be connected to other standalone hubs—either by connecting them together with coaxial
cable or linking (or cascading) them using twisted pair cable between ports on each hub.

UTP is a ubiquitous type of copper cabling used in telephone wiring and local area networks (LANs).

Wide Area Network A wide area network is a telecommunications network that extends over a large
geographic area.

Workstation A workstation is a special computer designed for technical or scientific applications.

Intended primarily to be used by a single user, they are commonly connected to a local area network
and run multi-user operating systems.
