Topic: ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

TECHNOLOGY IN ANCIENT TIMES

Technology is an extremely helpful companion for human beings. The world has
experienced rapid economic growth thanks to technology, raising overall living standards for
people. Technology affects every part of a society, affecting each sub-facet of a civilization,
including its: military, architecture, cities, health, communication, government, time/calendars and
language. Technology did not emerge overnight. It has been a process that has required enough
time due to historical advancements in human living styles.

In Ancient technology, of which the oldest science, math and medicine is recorded in East,
Southern and Northern Africa, technology was passed down by traders who traveled in search of
tin and other commodities, as well as by craftsmen who worked with metal, stone, leather, and
other materials. These craftsmen either taught others directly or provided models for other
craftsmen to copy and recreate in order to pass on their skills.

Adam’s Calendar and the oldest math-based calculator, helped the ancient kingdoms to keep
time, communicate numerical quantities, and helped them to govern their economies and grow.
The Mesopotamians are known for the creation of pottery in ancient times. Their passion for
pottery led to the invention of wheels, created in 3500 BC and they were put to chariots three
centuries later. Today, wheels are found on practically everything. These are undoubtedly one
ancient creation that sparks wonder today because it makes so many machines essential for human
survival.

Advanced technology in ancient times helped to shape agricultural practices, which helped
ancient societies to thrive, and formed the backbone of the powerful economies of antiquity. The
invention of irrigation systems, architectural structures, the invention of glass, and the use of baked
clay all played a part in the development of ancient cities and kingdoms. Mesopotamia, the ancient
so-called “cradle of civilization,” saw the ancient Sumerians invent most of the basic items
(technologies) that are still used today, including ships, the wheel, irrigation systems, metallurgy,
and one of the oldest written scripts.

Technology is an extremely critical force in the economy of the world. The experiences of
different historical periods vary as a result of technological advancements. Massive inventions on
tools and processes developed long time ago continue to rein development in the world. Based on
how the 21st century is utilizing ancient technology's influence in technology; it is agreeable that
technology will continue to advance and cite extremely huge impact in the livelihood of different
people in future.

TOPIC: LOWERING THE AGE OF CRIMINAL LIABILITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Lowering the MACR: the Wrong Solution for

Philippines’ failing Juvenile Justice System

If we fail to understand the underlying reasons how and why children commit crimes, we as
adults, fail our children. The ongoing efforts in Congress to lower the age of criminal responsibility
in the Philippines below 15 years of age (lowering vary from 9 and 12 years) prompted strong
opposition from children's rights organizations and the international community, including the
United Nations. There is a concerning lack amount of evidence and data that children are
responsible for the increase in crime rates committed in the Philippines. Lowering the minimum
age of criminal responsibility (MACR) is a shortsighted solution that will mostly affect the
children of the poor.

No child is destined to be a criminal. Rather, outside forces-parenting, socializing, and

environment led children to adopt lives of crime and antisocial behavior to survive. These children
tend to be exposed to violence at higher rates, an exposure which, in turn, socializes children into
believing antisocial behavior is the norm. Whether motivated by hunger, peer pressure, or the
influence of older members in the community who engage in criminal activity, many poor children
do not see participating in crime as a choice but as an inevitable part of life. If children who have
been exploited by criminal syndicates are penalized instead of the adults who abused them, we fail
to uphold the rights and well-being of children.

Many of the children who end up in prison do not need discipline; they need guidance,
education, healthcare, and nutrition. Detaining children will not teach them accountability for their
actions. In order to maximize their potential to contribute to nation-building, children must grow
up in a caring, nurturing and protective environment. This requires strong parenting support
programs and access to health, education, and social services as well as to child-sensitive justice
and social welfare systems.

We encourage the Philippine Congress and our duty-bearers in the government to; Push for
the full and effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice Law so that both children who commit
crimes and their victims are assisted and supported. Punish the crime syndicates who take
advantage of children, not the children who need to be rescued, supported, and rehabilitated. And
instead of lowering the MACR, support local government units in providing prevention,
intervention, and diversion programs for children.

Lowering the MACR will plunge the Philippines deeper into a state of abusing children's
rights, harming the poor, and pushing an ineffective and detrimental justice system. The change we
want to see most is for the Juvenile Justice Law to be fully and effectively implemented. The right
course of action is not lowering the MACR. Instead, the Philippine Government should focus its
resources towards the full implementation of R.A. 9344. Doing so will align the Philippines'
juvenile justice system with international standards, promote the best interests of Filipino youth,
and move towards a more safe and productive society.

Questions: (5 points each)

1. What is the thesis statement of your essay?

There is a concerning lack amount of evidence and data that children are responsible for
the increase in crime rates committed in the Philippines. Lowering the MACR will plunge the
Philippines deeper into a state of abusing children's rights, harming the poor, and pushing an
ineffective and detrimental justice system. If we fail to understand the underlying reasons how and
why children commit crimes, we as adults, fail our children.

2. What are the reasons given to support your argument? Cite at least two.

We stated an alarming number of reasons that supports our arguments, including: These
children tend to be exposed to violence at higher rates, an exposure which, in turn, socializes
children into believing antisocial behavior is the norm. Whether motivated by hunger, peer
pressure, or the influence of older members in the community who engage in criminal activity,
many poor children do not see participating in crime as a choice but as an inevitable part of life.

support programs and access to health, education, and social services as well as to child-sensitive
justice and social welfare systems.

3. Provide a counterargument or an opposing view you used for your claim. Write at least one
sentence that will oppose the views you expressed about the topic.

The vast majority of Chinese believe lowering the age of criminal responsibility is a
necessary adjustment. Nowadays, most children have easy access to the Internet and online
contents, and thus children are found involved in criminal cases that they were unlikely to get
involved in the past. Additionally, statistics from the Supreme People's Procuratorate indicate that
cases of intentional injury, robbery and rape brought against minors are on the rise, and most are
brought against children aged between 12 and 14. In this sense, the public's support for the
adjustment is understandable, as it will help to deter potential crimes among juveniles.

Topic: DOES SOCIAL MEDIA DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD?

“SocMed Addiction”: Dangers of Social Medias

“Social media is training us to compare our lives, instead of appreciating everything we are.
No wonder why everyone is depressed.” Bill Murray asserts. Social networks abuse a fundamental
mechanism of our existence – the need to form groups with other people, communicate, and
coexist. Social media is ripping apart the social aspect of human existence by creating a divide in
communication, understanding, and unity. Digitizing our lives through free centralized platforms,
which profit from human attention, created many problems in society including addiction, behavior
manipulation, and misinformation. The power it has over people is dangerous and often goes
unnoticed. People should care because if not addressed or taken care of social media could cause
national and international problems.

Social media can lead to depression, anxiety, and loneliness. One of the first and most
apparent issues with social media is addiction. A 2019 study stated that 12- to 15-year-olds in the
U.S. found that those who spent more than three hours a day using social media might be at
heightened risk for mental health problems and have observed links between high levels of social
media use and depression or anxiety symptoms. Social media can also provide platforms for
bullying and exclusion, unrealistic expectations about body image and sources of popularity,
normalization of risk-taking behaviors, and can be detrimental to mental health.

But Social networks and medias are everywhere – A social media is a free online platform
which people use to build social networks or social relations with other people who share similar
personal or career interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections. The impact of social
networks on young people is significant. It is becoming increasingly clear that social networks
have become part of people’s lives. People from anywhere can connect with anyone. Regardless
of the location and religion. The prettiness of social media is that you can attach with anyone to
learn and share your thoughts.

Social media can be a great tool if used correctly, but more often than not, people misuse
and abuse it. Not only is social media often abused and misused, but it has a gained a blind
following. Many social media users today cannot prove why social media is helpful or beneficial
Instead those who support social media want an explanation as to why social media is bad,
shifting the burden of proof to the opposers of the incessant use of social media. The negative
effects of social media outweigh the positive. Studies have shown that increased use of social
media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok is leading to depression, anxiety, and
loneliness.

The fast, easy access to information that is supposed to be beneficial to society is actually
detrimental to society. We are being cheated by having Social media and networks for free. The
price we pay, as a collective, is enormous. With social networks, we partly lose the means to
progress and develop. Instead, we get addiction, hyper-personalized information, censorship, and
observation of every move we make on the app. The issues are not apparent at the moment, as
they do not have immediate implications. Social networks already have a global presence and are
in control of information. People need to change the destructive patterns of social media use
before it destroys society. As humans depend more on them, their adverse side effects will affect
the vast majority of the population, permanently altering the next generation.

Questions: (5 points each)

1. What is the topic sentence?

The impact of social networks on young people is significant, it is becoming increasingly

clear that social networks have become part of people’s lives. Although there are important
benefits, the power it has over people is dangerous and often goes unnoticed. People should care
because if not addressed or taken care of social media could cause national and international
problems.

2. How did you prove that there is an issue?

We proved our argument about the issue by providing conducted research regarding
the dangers of social media and networks (especially if not used correctly), in particular of: How
the negative effects and impact of social media outweigh the positive. Social media is ripping
apart the social aspect of human existence by creating a divide in communication, understanding,
and unity. Digitizing our lives through free centralized platforms, which profit from human
attention, created many problems in society including addiction, behavior manipulation, and
misinformation. And why studies have shown that increased use of social media platforms like
Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok is leading to depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

3. How did you conclude your paragraphs?

We concluded our paragraphs by the format of how an argumentative essay is written

using the information we researched about our chosen topics. We stated our thesis statement on
‘how social media danger us’ in the introduction. In the body, we showed our strong evidences and
proofs of facts that support our argument, shared evidences for the counter-arguement that opposes
our claim and declare rebuttals as a response to the counted-argument. And lastly, at the last
paragraph, we formed a strong restatement of our claim that will win the argument as our
conclusion.
