Since 1950, El Salvador has been characterized by net emigration. According to the United Nations,

1.6 million Salvadorans lived abroad in 2019, 24.8 percent of the country’s total population. Such

movement has a positive impact on local well-bring, including through receipt of remittances. Between

2001-2019, remittances comprised at least 15 percent of El Salvador’s GDP.

various manufactures (garments of clothing, plastics, metal industry, chemical and
pharmaceutical industry) among others.
