THE IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTIVES IN WRITING

When the students progress in the creation of sentences, they should start putting those sentences
together to create paragraphs, for this they have to learn about a new set of relationships. Written
sentences invoke a complex twinning of structural, lexical, semantic and logical relationships.
Since there is a lot to learn about sentence connections, students should start writing paragraphs
very early. It is not necessary or should be postponed until students reach an intermediate or
advanced level.
The phrases in written speech must be linked to each other in some way; if not, they fail completely.
Links consist of a variety of devices, such as demonstrative articles pronouns, conjunctions,
conjunctive adverbs, prepositional phrases, repetition of keywords, parallel structure, and synonyms.
These devices, though varied, actually represent 'a subtle repetition'. Each sentence of a
composition must repeat, directly or indirectly, a particle or the whole idea of the preceding sentence.
You should also be aware of the fact that a phrase can be complete as far as grammar is concerned,
but hesitant as far as its position in a sequence is concerned. For example:
• His ideas about education have changed.
• But cotton takes chemicals from the soil.
• Then the style changed and the skirts became very short.
These links can be classified in several ways:
• Referentials (his ideas on education have changed).
• Sequential (then the style has changed).
• Contrastives (but cotton takes chemicals from the soil).
• Substitutes (many are attractive, but poorly constructed).
The classification of connectives is complicated by the fact that many of them have grammatical and
logical functions. They not only serve as links between sentences, but also indicate the logical nature
of the connection; relationships such as: addition, causality, comparison, contrast, result, summary,
etc.

Questions:
1 “Sentences in written discourse must be linked together in some manner” (line
15)

a) What linking devices are mentioned by the author?

The author mentioned pronouns, demonstrative article, conjunctions, conjunctive adverbs,

prepositional phrases, repetition of key words, paralled structure and synonyms.

b) how many examples of these can you find in the first paragraph?

The writing-students should begin writing paragraphs very early to help in the structure or the
order in which each word should go and form a correct sentence.

c)why are these linking device more important in writing than the speech?

The intentions that students need to learn about as soon as they begin to use sentences in
sequence. Since there is a good deal to be learned about sentence connections, students should
begin writing paragraphs very early .it need not and should not be postponed united students
reach in an intermediate or advanced level.
2 a) explain what is meant be a sentence can be complete as far as grammar is concerned
but dependent as far as its position in a sequence of sentences is concern.

A study of compositions must also become aware of the fact that a sentence can be complete as
far as grammar is concerned, but dependent as far as its positions in a sequence is concerned a
few sentences will illustrate. Their ideas about educations have changed.

b) choose any two of the illustrate sentences given by the author and suggest what
sentences or sentences may have preceded them.

• Many are attractive but poorly built: Many are attractive but poorly constructed is what
happens in current education. The books have a lot of illustration. They are eye-catching
but there is a lot of lack in grammar structure.
• Their ideas about educations have changed: Nowadays it is taught in a different way,
there is more interaction with the students. There are dynamics in which the education is
different, the previous wings. Everything is learned by playing.

3 a) Do you agree with the author recommendations that students should begin writing
paragraphs very early?

Yes, because it helps the student to be able to recognize structures or words. For example, where
the pronoun should go, the verbs, nouns, adjectives. Complement or frequency of time. The order
in which each sentence should go. Suggest some ways to provide good practice. I suggest that
students should be taught from the primary level to make complete sentences. that contain all the
structures. little by little the student when he reaches the secondary level or institutes or
universities, knows how to write and speak correctly and can give lectures and can devote without
fear of being wrong.

b. Do most coursebooks make adequate provision for writing connected sentences at the
elementary level, suggest some ways of providing appropriate practice?

NO. In most books there are always grammatical errors and including the concept that the student
wants to teach and the answers they provide are false ... when making a text you must go through
different specialists in the broad knowledge that the sentences have about grammar and
concepts. should be revised over and over again.
