|| Om Sthitiayeh Namah ||
(English translation of Hindi discourse given by P.P. Aniruddha Bapu on 28th September 2006 on Radha
Sahastranaam at New English High School, Bandra)

Om Sthitiayeh Namah ,Sthiti (state / condition) In this world whatever event

takes place, irrespective of whether it is at a human level, man made or even at
the level of nature, it is divided into three parts. First part is the beginning
(Aarambh), and the third is the finish (Annt), in between the start and end is
the Sthiti or Gati (motion). Everyone knows about it. When we initiate any
endeavour, after some time of its initiation the speed (gati) of work starts declining to a great extent,
or sometimes it totally stops. When the motion (Gati) stops then we say, now it is Karyashoonyata (the
non existence of the work), the work is no longer happening. This means that Sthiti is Karyashoonta, a
state where nothing is happening. We define this as Sthiti.

What is Sthiti? A state of being motionless (Gatiheenata), a state of being stable (Sthairya) is Sthiti. If
being motionless is stability, then such stability is of no use. On the other hand if Gati is a state of
being unstable then such a Gati is also of no use. This means that Sthiti is such a Gati, by which one
gets momentum, by which one gets speed. When something possesses speed, when there is motion,
and along with that speed, along with that Gati when it remains stable then such a state / condition is
defined as Sthiti, Sthairya (a condition of being stable). Sthiti does not mean being motionless, and
Gati does not mean instability.

Look, when a man is walking, there is motion. In case his balance is absent when he is drunk or in
case the poor fellow has some illness, then he will have the motion (Gati) however he will lack stability,
so what is the use of such a motion (Gati)? What is the use of such a speed? He may fall into the
gutter; he may also hurt himself, something dreadful will definitely happen. There is motion, but there
is no stability, then such a motion is of no benefit and in case he is only sitting still, he is not doing
anything, then also it is of no use. A car should have an accelerator and it should also have brakes.
The presence of both is equally important. The presence of gear is the most important of all. Sthiti
does not mean being motionless. Sthiti does not mean Karyashoonta (end of the work). Sthiti means
such an appropriate Gati, because of this Gati, along with this Gati the one who achieves motion,
because of which one acquires speed, and it still remains stable. Imagine we are sitting in a vehicle
where initially the driver drove at a speed of 80 kmph, now he is driving at 100 kmph, later he is
moving towards 150 kmph. What will happen then? The person who is sitting inside the vehicle starts
getting the jerks, loses stability, and he starts getting a fear in his mind, in his heart as to what is
going to happen now, says help - help, Ram – Ram – Ram – Ram – Ram, what does this mean? This
Gati, which is taking place, is inappropriate and if at this point of time if suddenly the brakes are
applied then what will happen? The car will turn upside down.

Now see another situation. There is a vehicle, a very good car that has
been purchased, Rolls Royce or Mercedes Benz, whatever it is. You have
purchased it with heart filled emotions, parked it in your compound, and have
not driven it for 1 year. After a year you sit to drive the car. Petrol, etc has
been filled, whatever requires to be filled, has been filled. Will you be able to
drive the car? No you will not be able to drive. Meaning we should first imbibe
that the balance between Sthiti and Gati, the appropriate balance, is Sthiti. And
the appropriate balance between stability and Gati is Sthiti. And what is Gati?
The apt balance between movement and stability means Gati (motion). That means Sthiti and Gati
should be one and the same. Every time in our life when we do some activity (Gati), then along with it
the presence of stability is very necessary. And when we remain stable along with that it is equally
important to do some activity (Gati).

Similarly see, it’s a small thing, when we are in school, then at the month end of April, after the
exams etc. are over, we get a vacation lasting 1 – 1.5 months. And when the school reopens in
between too we get a vacation of 1 – 1.5 months as per the curriculum of the school. I am talking
about say the fifth or the sixth standard students. I know that the case for students of ninth and tenth
standard is different. Nobody teaches them and no one should teach them. It is incorrect. However
they (children) are not studying does not mean that they are not engaged in anything else. Some
children play, some study, some go for a picnic. But some don’t do anything. Neither do they study nor
do they do anything else. They merely sit at home and watch TV throughout the day. So is this Gati? Is
this Sthiti? No, so what is this! A state of being activity less (Kriyashoonyatva), lack of any work
(Kriyaheenata). What will happen because of this? Who will be benefited? Nobody / nothing. Nowadays
I see children, irrespective of whether it is the Diwali vacation or summer vacation, children are totally
engaged in watching T.V. throughout the day or else they keep on playing video games. At the most
some two children sit with their parents and play cards and nothing else. These 1.5 months should be
utilized for innovative and creative activities. The games played by children are also a creative activity.
We learn sportsmanship from these itself. We always see that those people who in their formative
years (youth), in their adolescence, in their childhood, play outdoor sports, who keep on playing such
outdoor games, have a quality of sportsmanship within them. A feeling of sportsmanship remains
because of which, they learn to face any difficulty that comes in front of them, with a little less
seriousness, but with complete knowledge and complete consciousness. They learn how to work in co-
operation with one another. The spirit of teamwork arises within them. We should work collectively in a
group. And only those people who believe in teamwork understand this fact.

Now we will see one such group, the Indian cricket team. If they do not possess the spirit of
teamwork, if they do not work in collaboration with one another, if they do not possess the act and the
spirit of appreciating the other member’s contribution, then this team would never be able to win,
never. Similarly in our lives, in the life of every individual, it is extremely important to possess this
spirit of teamwork. Because unlike animals, humans do not only stay together but there is much more
in terms of togetherness. Look at deer’s, they stay together, but do they possess the emotions of co-
operation? No they do not. When a lion comes to attack one deer, and if all the deer’s come together
and pounce back on the lion, then what will happen? The lion will have to run away. But this does not
happen. So what does this mean? This means that although they stay together they do not possess the
spirit of teamwork within them. In the mind of humans, in the human society,
in the society of humans, which we refer to as a society because it is a group of
people, here it is essentially a rule that we help each other. We try to lighten
each other’s sorrow. We try to reduce each other’s suffering. We try to become
a co-partner in each other’s sorrow. We try to become a co-partner in each
other’s spirit of joy. Only then we call it as a society or else it would have been
called as a hut. Only because 10, 100 or 1000 deer stay together it cannot be
called as a society of deer, cannot be called as a team of deer. Hence humans
must realize that the progress of a human being is attributed to their intellect. And with the help of
that intellect humans have accepted life as a team of people. Hence in order to appropriately adapt this
life as a team, to appropriately imbibe the same, certain sets of laws, certain sets of rules and
regulations have to be constructed. Many a times they are the laws of the nation, they are the laws of
the state, many a times they are the laws of the religion, at times they are the laws of a particular
clan, at times these are the rules of a house, but the presence of rules is a must. Laws and rules, what
we call as rules, the laws, and rules are extremely essential for the progress of human beings. And the
Gati that is accompanied by Sthiti is Pragati, meaning it is progress. If we want to progress it is very
important for us to abide by both, the rules and the regulations and to accept them in our life.

It is a simple thing; somebody is very fond of laddus (a ball shaped sweet). Laddus have been
prepared in a huge quantity in the house. This does not mean that the person will keep on eating the
laddus throughout the day. Irrespective of how much the person is fond of it, however if he keeps on
eating the laddus throughout the day what will be the consequence? The next day he will get
indigestion. Due to improper digestion he will fall ill. The next day he will not be in a position to eat
even half a laddu. This means that because of the lack to suitably discriminate between the two
situations viz the speed (Gati) of consuming the laddus and the sthiti of not eating the laddus, such a
troublesome situation has originated. If we bear this in our mind, during every aspect of our life,
during every step of our life, only then we will be able to progress, meaning we will be able to fully
develop ourselves. We can progress. And this progress, this Sthiti, which we all know about, is
Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Brahma is the one who does the work of giving birth, the one who gives
birth. Shiv is the one who is responsible for bringing an end and Vishnu is the one who protects the
Sthiti. Sthiti means the earth, which is revolving. Will we call this as Gati or Sthiti? The biggest
example that Gati and Sthiti are one and the same is the earth itself, Vasundhara (another name for
the earth) itself. If anybody is questioned whether the earth is stable or unstable, then what will be the
answer? What am I asking? Is it stable or is it unstable? It is Stable! But it is still revolving. Meaning
there is Gati.
So how is this earth? Despite of possessing motion (Gati) it is stable. Whose support does she have? Is
she hanging with the aid of a thread or a cord from the top? No. Has she been tied? No. Is there any
pillar below? No. Is there anything attached to her sides? No. Then also she is stable. Because of what?
Because of her own Gati (motion). Whatever Gati (speed) is required by her to rotate around herself,
she possesses that Gati and whatever Gati is required by her to revolve around the sun, she moves on
with that same Gati always. Hence the earth is stable, despite of possessing Gati it remains stable. And
what type of Gati (speed) does the earth possess? It possesses 2 types of Gati, with the aid of one Gati
she is rotating around herself and with the aid of the second she is revolving around her God, her
husband, the Sun. And so who are we? We are the sons or the daughters of that same earth. We
should learn this from our Supreme Mother that if along with Gati I desire to possess stability meaning
Sthiti, then as a true son of the earth, I should keep the earth as an ideal before me. What does the
earth do? She always keeps rotating about herself and while rotating around herself she keeps on
revolving around God. Not even for a moment, for even 1/1000 part of a moment if the Gati of this
earth comes to a standstill then what will happen? Neither will remain the earth, nor the people living
on the earth, nor the flora and fauna nothing. Meaning what do we have to learn from this mother
earth? That most importantly we must keep doing circumambulation around oneself. Do Pradakshina of
yourself everyday. Hence when we stand in front of God, then which Pradakshina should we do first?
Swapradakshina (Pradakshina of one’s self)! While we stand we do Pradakshina three times in three
directions. At that time which incantation, which Shloka do we recite?

Yani, Kanich Papani, Janmatar Krutanich
Tani, Tani Vinashanti, Pradakshinyam Pade Pade

Yani, Kanich Papani, and Janmatar Krutanich – Meaning, all along my several births whatever sins
knowingly or unknowingly have occurred by me, Oh Lord. Tani, Tani Vinashanti, Pradakshinam Pade
Pade – With my each step in this Pradakshina, with my each pace, one by one each sin is getting
destroyed, only by doing Pradakshina of myself and simultaneously reciting God’s name. And when we
do the same, while reciting the name of God we take Pradakshina of God, of his temple, of his idol,
then it is said that the sins gets destroyed 10 fold. This is true. We can achieve this by simply doing
the Pradakshina around the idol, but more than that we can achieve the same if we do true
Pradakshina of our self, not with our bhautik body, not only physically. Pradakshina, Ikshan means to
see. To take an examination means ikshan, when we ourselves keep on taking our own examination,
when we ourselves keep on giving appropriate marks to ourselves. Just because it is our own paper we
should not give 100 out of 100 marks instead we give only whatever we are truly worthy of. Meaning
when we ourselves become our own examiners, only then we are aptly doing Pradakshina of ourselves.
And along with it, you will say, when we become examiners of God, then? Then there is a problem! We
can be spectators of God, not examiners. Who are we to take God’s examination? For the one who has
created everything, who are we to assess him, to take his examination? We are nobody. What are we
supposed to do? We are supposed to do our own Pradakshina. Meaning we have to do our own ikshan,
we have to observe our own self, we have to take our own test, we have to take our own exam, we
have to do our own assessment. But while we are doing the lord’s Pradakshina, what has to be done?
Then we are supposed to see / say that, Oh Lord similar to how the earth revolves around the sun on
all sides, whichever side she is in, she gets the same sun rays from one side as from the other side.
The same is achieved from the third side as well as from the fourth side also. Whatever portion of
sunrays she is entitled to get, she receives only that much.

The portion of sunrays that is not beneficial for the earth, is not useful for the earth, does not
reach the earth’s surface. Similarly while we are doing Pradakshina of God, then we must understand
this, in our mind we must make a firm commitment to God, that this is God’s idol, although this idol’s
eyes are in one direction, even while I am standing behind this idol, God is looking at me. Irrespective
of whether I look at God’s idol from the front, from the sides, I should only see his holy feet, his head,
or the kalash (the dome on the top of the temple) of the temple. For me everything is one and the
same. Only when I am standing in front of the Lord’s idol, can the Lord see me, when we try to forget
this thought, only, then we do the appropriate, the right pradakshina. The right pradakshina is that,
the lord is looking at me every moment, at every moment he is watching me, despite of me shutting
all the 4 doors of my house, whatever I am doing is continuously being watched by God. Not only this,
whatever thoughts are encroaching my mind, God is hearing them also. To firmly believe on these
facts is the Lord’s actual pradakshina.

Madhavraoji Deshpande paternal uncle had such an eye illness that despite all the treatments
the disease was not getting cured. He had a firm belief in Baba. The other family members did not
have so much of belief. Only his nephew, Shama, had a firm belief. He came to Baba. What did Baba
do? He was being treated since the past 1.5 years, however there wasn’t any improvement, the eyes
were red as before, the pain was as before, the eyes were watering as before, what did Baba do? He
put Beeba, Bhalantak in his eyes. This fruit is such that even if it comes in slight contact with our skin,
then the entire skin gets burnt. Similarly the seeds of this fruit are also such that when they come in
contact with our skin it causes the entire skin to be burnt. And its juice, its powder, and juice were
mixed by Baba and he put it in Nimonkar chacha’s eyes. On top of that he bandaged the eyes and
allowed it to remain the whole night. Everyone thought that now he is gone. He had pain in his eyes,
but at least he could see. Now there will not be any pain, but he may become blind. After he woke up
in the morning he again came to Baba. Baba undressed the bandage and sprinkled water on the eyes.
The people witnessed that the eyes became absolutely normal, neither any pain persisted, nor did the
redness exist, and his vision sharpened as compared to before. When we firmly believe in God, in
whatever God does for us, then whatever are the orders of God, whatever are the words of the
Sadguru, they should be our ordeal.

We read in the Sai Satcharita, when a person had some stomach ailment
then Baba tells people “give him walnut, pistachio nuts and almonds to eat”.
When someone else gives the same remedy then instead of his stomachache
subsiding, his pain starts increasing. Because in the first instance Baba’s words
were present. In the second instance Baba’s words were absent. So we must
realize that the remedy here is not the walnut, the pistachio nuts, or the
almonds. Nor is it Beeba or bhalantak but it is Baba’s words, Baba’s orders.

My own great grandfather, great grandfather’s father, Gopinathshastri Padhyaye’s father,

Jagannathrao, Jagannathshatri Padhyaye, had an ulcer on his leg. He belonged to a rich family. He had
also gone abroad for his treatment. During those days going overseas, going to England wasn’t that
easy. However he had even stayed there. He stayed there was 6 months however there wasn’t any
relief. After coming back here someone told him that in Akkalkot there is a Swami Maharaj. But he did
not listen. However he was a worshiper of Datta. He proceeded to Gandgapur. While doing the prayers,
the incarnation of Datta of Lord Narasimha Saraswati, came and gave him a vision. “I am residing in
Akkalkot. Come there and meet”. He then believed, accepted it, and went there. On the first day
Swamiji rejected him. He did not see him at all. When he went the next morning then he (Swamiji)
started abusing him. Abuses were such that if anyone would listen to it he would tremble. He started
giving such bad words. Then Jagannathraoji said that this is the Prasad of God for him. These are not
abuses but they are blessings. The two who were with him were big Shastris. They started saying,
“how is this Sadguru? He is abusing”. Jagannathraoji replies no, we should just continue to recite the
Dattamala Mantra.

Balonmat pishach veshaya, this is Lord’s balonmat pishach veshaya. Only this is appropriate for
me. My Sadguru will only do what is right for me. When he goes on the third day, then Swamiji lifts a
big pole and runs behind him to hit him. However he does not run, the others run way and observe
from a distance as to what was happening. Jagannath Shastri says “hit me oh Lord, hit me, kill me,
whatever has to happen let it happen with your hands, then there will be no problem”. Then throwing
the pole aside, Swamiji leaves from that place abusing him. Jagannath Shastri is following him. As he
starts walking behind Swamiji, Swamiji starts running. Now who will run with Swamiji? Still this poor
fellow tries to run. However Swamiji’s Gati is Swamiji’s speed, and at one point of time, he remains far
behind, he cannot even see him. Where has Swamiji gone? And there is not even a single human being
there to whom he could ask where has Maharaj gone. Then he becomes stable at that place where he
had seen him last. He says, “I will stand at this place only, till the time I reached this place I could see
Swamiji! I was seeing my Swamiji, my Lord. After this point he disappeared! Now beyond this point no
land exists for me. Only this is my land and nothing else. I will stand here only”. It is 8 o’clock in the
morning. From that time till 11 o’clock in the night Jagannathraoji is standing at that same place. He
has neither eaten, nor has he taken anything to drink. Sunlight was there, this was there, and that was
there, there was nothing. At 11 o’clock in the night and other people arrive. They say, “Brother, at
least come home now. Swamiji is sitting there, come and meet him there”. “Not even one, not even
two, I will stand here only”. He stood stable. “The place where I have last got the darshan of God, only
that place is my land. Enough, rest there is nothing for me”. The next day Swamiji is passing by the
same place, he doesn’t even look at him and proceeds ahead.

In the evening again while passing by from there he doesn’t even look, not even an inch, he
doesn’t see him at all. On the third day while Swamiji is passing by from there a buffalo / ox was
throwing Gobar. Not gobar what is it that a buffalos excretion called? The shit. What is it termed in
Hindi I do not know? It was throwing that. Swami tells him, “put this, eat this, put this, and eat this”.
Jagannathji says, “enough, got it”. He picks up that dung and puts it on his wound. He himself was a
BA during those days. So we can think that he was well read / knowledgeable. The people who
accompanied him were also Pandits, were also knowledgeable. They tell him, ”brother if you apply this,
there will be an infection, and there will arise another problem. The doctors have said that if there is an
infection you may have to amputate your leg”. He says, “in case my leg has to
be amputated then let it happen as per Swamiji’s wish. What difficulty do I
have? There isn’t any problem for me”. However he is applying it on the wound.
Swamiji has also asked to eat this filth. To eat that dung is not an easy task for
anyone. As he eats the filth it comes out. It happens like this almost 3 – 4
times. He thinks, “I am such a sinful person. God himself has asked me to eat
this and I am saying no to it? It is better to die. But even if I die, I will eat it
and then die”. He was determined to do this. And with his hand he picked up
one entire ball and put it in his mouth. In the meantime Swami Maharaj arrives there. He says, “Come
along with me. You were standing there, now come with me. Come with me”. Since there was filth in
his mouth he couldn’t even open his mouth. He even did not have the heart to swallow it. With great
courage he managed to put it in his mouth, but did not have the heart to swallow it. Now he started
feelings that how sinful am I, Swami himself has come walking for me, telling me to come along with
him. God himself is asking me to walk along with him. And I am unable to even obey his orders. Hence
he starts swallowing it. And suddenly he realizes how sweet it is. Everything tasted so sweet. Swamiji
in the meantime gives a great blow on his back. As a result of which whatever was there in his mouth
comes out in his hands. He sees that it is a laddu. Now what had he eaten? And what has come out?
Now holding the laddu in the hand he is walking. People near him start asking him, “Brother, why
aren’t you eating the Prasad given by Swamiji?” “Swamiji had asked me to eat the shit of the buffalo
but this is laddu. This is not my Prasad. The Prasad for me was that shit only”. See what are the
emotions, what is the extent of obedience! Then Swamiji abuses very badly and says, “Eat it”. As he
eats it with full love, it has such a foul smell, it appears so bad, that he closes his nose and everything
and just manages to eat it. The next day when he wakes up he realizes that 80% of his leg pain had
vanished. That ulcer which had not healed for so long, despite of his staying in England for 6 months,
was already half healed. This was his Sthiti, was his Gati.

Whatever my Sadguru has said for me, only that is right. Even if I feel that how much damage it may
be causing. However in the end only this is going to be fruitful. If that Jagannathraoji would think that
he is asking me to eat the shit of the buffalo, asking me to apply it, he wants my leg to be amputated,
he is my enemy, and then his leg would have never healed. But he realized that the only remedy is the
Sadguru’s words. Since then Swamiji’s devotion started in our Padhyaye family.

Once Jagannathraoji took his son along with him, meaning Gopinath Shastri, who was my Sadguru,
who was 11 – 12 years old then. It is an incidence of 1878. Swamiji had sent a message through one
of his bhakta named Virupaksha Modi, who had come to Bombay. A message was sent through him
“come and meet me”. He (Jagannathraoji) went to meet him. A message to bring his son along with
him was also sent. Meaning to bring along Gopinathji also. He had 2 sons, and he took Gopinathji
along with him, who was 11 – 12 years old. Then Swamiji gave Gopinathji 2 coins and told him “son
when I meet you next I will give you 2 more coins”. Then he told the child, “Go, you go and play”.
Because it was told to Gopinathji, he went to play. And to all those people who were sitting there, his
own people, he told them “from the third day from today I am going to leave this earth”. Jagannathji
starts crying. He (Swamiji) says, “don’t say anything, and go from here. First go to Bombay”. So he
comes to Bombay. After that his heart is filled with sorrow that Swamiji has expired. During his end
moments, during his last breaths I was not there with him. To our son, to Gopinath, Datta bhakti,
Swami bhakti, and Vitthal bhakti had been bestowed. Everyone in the family were devotees. Good
devotees. With lots of love he used to pray to God, worship God, and do naamsmaran. Once Gopinathji
sees a vision. Swami comes in his dreams and says; “now I am residing in Shirdi. Come and meet me”.
He did not know anything about Shirdi. One man tells him that there lives a Muslim fakir, Yavan fakir
(Mohomadden mendicant). But he belonged to the Brahman clan, one of the most pious Brahman
families. Dashgranthi (the one who has studied the 10 books of Rigveda) Brahman clan. Now the thing
is that, the one who has always been a head of all the gatherings of the pandits throughout the
country, now has to go to a yavan, this is not correct. However since it is Akkalkot Swami Maharaj’s
orders, for me to think like this is improper.

Keeping this in mind and understanding this he actually proceeded. Still his
heart pounded dhak – dhuk, dhak – dhuk, whatever it is said, he was feeling
scared. An when he stands before Sai, Sai removes two more coins from the
pocket of his kafni (a mendicant’s cloak), and hands it over to Gopinathji and
says, “Aata Tari Khoon Patli Na!” “ At least now have you understood the sign?
At least now did you understand the symbol! Understood the signs! Understood
the symbol!” “Aata Tari Khoon Patli Na!” Gopinathji realizes that only this is my
Sai, only he is my Swami, only he is my Vitthal, he is everything for me. And
from that day onwards leaving aside all the holy Sanskrit chants, Gopinathji adapts this sentence as
gurumantra, “Aata Tari Khoon Patli Na!” In Marathi it is said as “Aata Tari Khoon Patli Na!” And he kept
on doing jaap of this mantra. Rest he also used to do Sadhana. However what was the gurumantra?
meaning the chief mantra in his life? Baba’s first words. When he had seen Swamiji he was a small
child and was unaware about anything as to what is guru, what is a Sadguru, what do you mean by
doing their bhakti. Now he has realized that the first word uttered and heard from the guru’s mouth,
the first sentence is his life’s first mantra. And by uttering of the same, he sat along the banks of river
Tapi and Panthra and did penance. Where we are making a Punyakshetra and in that penance he got a
vision as to what is going to happen in the future, and who is going to come in the future, when is he
going to come, and he told his daughter, and also his granddaughter, meaning his daughter’s
daughter. He also told all his other relatives. But how did this happen? Because his every gati, his
every movement was only as per the words of his Guru (guruvakya). Only the words of my ishta devta
(tuetelar deity), my ishta dev, my god, are the ultimate. Other than his words, obeying anybody else’s
orders is absolutely incorrect. Whatever he says, only that is correct. Whatever he does, only that is
proper and I will always keep on doing that. And I will keep on doing that. Only because of this strong
determination Jagannathraoji’s life became beneficial / fruit giving, became successful. Gopinathshastri
Padhyaye’s life also became beneficial and also became successful. We can understand that in his life
Gati and stability were in sync. Hence there was stability in his life. There was Sthiti. As Gopinath
Shastri’s end was approaching he realized that after one year I have to go to God. Till then his mother
was alive, Gangabai, Jagannathraoji’s wife. How sad would mother be then! Hence to his mother, who
also was a very staunch devotee, he requested, “Oh mother, I have started feeling that now you
should start praying to God, that Oh Lord you call me”. Ganagabai knows what is the right of her son.
Then she says, “now that you have told, I will do it, son”. And Gangabai sits in front of Vitthal. She
says, “Whatever you want to happen let only that happen. I have come to know that may be you are in
the process of calling Gopinath. Hence Gopinath is worried about me as to how much grief I will have.
However God Vitthal if you wish that I should bear the suffering then please never break your rules for
me. Whatever you wish only that should happen. I am ready to bear this suffering. However for me if
you have to take pains, if you have to bear the pain, I will never like this”. Now after listening to this
what will God Vitthal not do? The next day on Brahmamahurat he took away that old lady, without any
illness, without any hesitation. Now exactly after 1 year Gopinath Shastri Padhyeji also left his body.
That too how? Gathering all his close relatives, his daughter meaning my grandmother, his grand
daughter meaning my mother, Vishwamayji Padhyaye, Leelamami Padhyaye, everyone, Girijabai
Deshpande, Sadashiv Kulkarni, calling everybody he told them everything clearly, whatever he wanted
to say.

After that he said “come let us do Namasmaran” and sat on his seat in Padmasan and while reciting his
Gods name, his Vithal’s name, suddenly the voice stopped. How did this happen? This happened
because in his entire life the vicious cycle of Sthiti and Gati did not exist. That Sthiti had transformed
to Gati and that Gati had transformed to Sthiti. Along with Gati stability always remains, Kriyaheenta
,Kriyashunayata can never remain. He continued doing devotion. Never did he ever weigh what god is
giving. I very much like one singing bhajans. Sadguru Makrandji also liked it very much.

"dOZ H$ao gmo hmao ao _Zdm Ÿ& ^OZ H$ao gmo {OVo'
^OZ H$ao Omo {OVo Ÿ& dOZ H$ao gmo hmao'
“Vajan kare so hare re manawa, Bhajan kare so jite”
“Bhajan kare so jite, Vajan kare so hare”

“Vajan kare so hare”. We must do bhajan of god and not his vajan (weight). We never get sthiti, we
never get stability. And the extent to which Gati should take place it doesn’t. Sometimes speed
decreases, why? Because we keep on weighing what God is giving us. We never do true bhajan of god.
To measure how much God has given me and how much he hasn’t means to weigh God. Arey, God is
so merciful so who are you to measure? Who are you to measure God’s strength? Who are you to
measure the one who is taking care of the entire earth, the entire Universe? What should we only do?
Pray with entire faith, with entire love, even if we are illiterate, even if we cannot chant the mantras
properly, no problem. Whatever prayers we can do in our own words, in our
own language, god listens to it, definitely listens. And from Him, only because
of these prayers, I am telling you again only because of these prayers we
can procure stability. Neither do we become activity less, nor do we become
directionless, nor do we become restless, and nor do we become uncontrollable.
We always remain in the condition of Sthiti, where there is Gati as well as
stability. And hence there is development as well as progress.

Prayers, in prayers there is a tremendous amount of energy. When we pray for ourselves,
sometimes when we pray for others then there is tremendous amount of energy in it. If any saint
writes the prayers then it is supreme. But the supreme prayer is the one mentioned by Sita, Janaki
Mata, in the Sunderkand,

"H$hohþ± VmV Ag _moa àZm_m Ÿ& g~ àH$ma à^w nwaZH$m_m Ÿ&

XrZ X`mcw {~aXw g§^mar Ÿ& hahþ ZmWo __ g§H$Q> ^mar Ÿ&'
“Kahe hoon, tat aas mor pranamaSab prakar prabhu purankama.
Din dayalu birdu sambhari. Harhoon nath mam sankatbhari”

That oh Lord Ram you, who are so merciful, you are the only one who is taking care, meaning
taking care of the needy, taking care of relatives.
Ramji also mentions ahead,
"__ nZ gaZmJV ^` hm[a Ÿ&'>
“Mam Pan Sarnagat Bhay Hari”

Dear, this is the prime of all the prayers. If we don’t even know this, or we don’t remember at
that point of time, then from our mind, with a pure heart, keeping full faith at god’s holy feet, the
words that are uttered, is itself the supreme prayer. Prayers does not mean petition. Prayer doesn’t
mean only to beg. Prayers mean stability. Prayers mean, telling god first that “oh lord you are the
compassionate of all. Oh god you are so merciful. Oh god you love me so much. I can’t even love you
one portion of what you love. Teach me how to love oh lord. Now I am in difficulty. My heart/mind has
become unstable god. Please protect me. The way you want to get me out of this difficulty, remove me
only by the same way, oh god. However other than your feet I have no other support, no other shelter,
no other refuge. God I have come to your refuge”. God will definitely listen to these prayers. But when
we pray for others, god listens to your prayers even if you do not say them. To do prayers for our own
self is also supreme. Along with it when we pray for others then even without we uttering, god listens
to our words. The words that we never even uttered, god hears those. You will say, Bapu what are you
talking? How does he hear the words that have not even been uttered? Which are not even there in our
mind, how does he hear them? He knows well in advance what is going to happen in the future.
Meaning what is going to happen in your future, at that point of time what you are going to say is
already heard by him. How does god hear without saying? Then this is how he hears even without you
saying anything!

Here I again recollect my own maternal grandmother, Shakuntalabai Pandit, Gopinathshastriji’s

one, and only daughter. Her maiden name was Malti. In Maharashtra post marriage there is a tradition
to change names. Initially her maiden name was Malti, Malti Padhyaye. After coming to her in-laws
house she became Shakuntalabai Pandit. Her devotion was also very good. Everyday she used to recite
Ramraksha 108 times. 108 times is not an easy task, the one’s who have done it know about it, that it
requires a minimum of 11 hours. And because she was habituated it used to take her 9 hours. During
the day reciting Ramraksha 108 times and also doing all the work. There were many servants; there
was lots of money, all right. But work has to be done by the mother only, the one she is responsible to
take care of!

Once it so happened that when she was a Vice principal and residing in Pune, after waking up in
the morning, she had to go to school at 7 am in the morning. So she used to wake up at 5 am in the
morning. She used to wake up at 4 am, by 5 am she used to have a bath and get ready, and then she
used to sit for prayers. When at 5 am she sat for prayers in front of lord
Vitthal’s picture, suddenly she heard some voice saying, “Daughter, don’t go to
school today. Daughter don’t go to school today”. Grandmother opened her
eyes and saw that there is no one besides her. She goes out to see. A beggar
was standing and telling repeatedly that “daughter don’t go to school today”.
Grandmother thought that the beggar was speaking. As he was old she asked,
“chachaji what do you want? Do you want food, but nothing is cooked till now.
There is some left over food of last night, will you like to eat that? If not, then
there is some jaggery, some peanuts, will you eat that?” The beggar replies that, “daughter whatever
you give me I will definitely eat that”. And she makes him sit in the verandah. She brings something to
eat, and also gets water. She feeds him with full love. And after that he says, “daughter may Allah
bless you, may Allah bless you. But you don’t go to school today”. She notices that the beggar is
looking like a Hindu, but talking about Allah. She didn’t know what was exactly the matter. And then
that person leaves. And then a thought strikes her mind that “was this my Sai who had come? And
thinking him to be a beggar I made him sit in the verandah. And made him eat some left overs and let
him go just like that. And I wasn’t even ready to listen to his words”. She feels extremely bad. She
then says that “god had come to my house, Sai himself had come to my house. And what did I do? I
thought that he was a beggar. I wasn’t able to recognize him. So I will not obey his orders. I am not
worthy of it; I am not worthy of obeying god’s orders. I am so worthless. But god wants my welfare.
He definitely knew, that I will go to school today and there is going to be some problem. So problem
should definitely come. See, what was the decision taken by the mind. That to a worthless lady like
me, pain should definitely come. God himself had come to my rescue at my doorstep and I thought
him to be a beggar? And I allowed him to eat yesterdays left over? How worthless am I? I should
surely get hardships. I will definitely go to school. See, what is the power of devotion. As she gets
ready to leave, she slips on the banana peel. She wants to move her leg, but she is unable to walk.
The people nearby lift her and bring her to her house. My mother must be 13 – 14 years then. She
realizes that it is Sai’s will. I can’t even walk, how will I go?
She sits in the house and keeps on doing naamsmaran. After 2 hours the neighbour comes and
tells her “sister, god has saved you, by giving a sprain in your leg”. She asks, “What happened”? “The
room that you sit in the school, that room’s ceiling broke entirely and fell down. A cyclone came for
just 5 minutes and everything went helter skelter and the ceiling broke and fell down. Sister in case
you would be sitting there then what would have been the consequence”? She says, “I knew something
like this was going to happen hence my savoir, my god had come and I, worthless, see what did I do.
Then too he saved me. I don’t want to do any treatment for this sprain”. She was also very rich, she
also possessed a car, everything. However she thought that she would not visit the doctor. “Neither
will the doctor be called at home, nor will the physician be called. I don’t even want to do a simple
massage with hot water. This sprain is god’s Prasad. And also repentance for me. This is Prasad, and it
is because of this prasad my life got saved. Because of which my life was saved, how can I call it a
sprain? This is lord’s Prasad. What treatment should I do for this”? Initially also god had listened to her
prayers.

She used to always pray for others, always pray for others. Everyday she used to recite
Ramraksha 108 times. Before sleeping in the night she used to say, “god who ever is in need of it, put
it in his account”. See! What is the thing? Everyday before sleeping what was said, “god who ever is in
need put it in his account, enough”! Just prayers, she used to do nothing more. She went to sleep in
the afternoon. After she wakes up from sleep, neighbours come to ask about her well being, as to “how
are you”, etc. Because they are aware that only a 13 year old child is there in the house and nobody
else. Along with them came an old man and an old lady and were accompanied by their two and a half
year old grand daughter. This two and a half year old grand daughter always used to come and play
with her auntie (mausi, mother’s sister). She sees her mausi, meaning my nani sleeping and she pulls
that same sprained leg with force. She has a toy in her hand that she forcefully hits on that same
sprained leg. That old man and old lady, who are her grandparents get scared thinking that on the leg
at the same place there is a sprain, there is swelling, there is pain, now what will
happen? Grandmother wakes up, her sleep is over and she gets up and stands
because people had come, because neighbours had come. She asks, if they want
water, should I get water? Saying this as she starts walking, she realizes that
there is no sprain in her leg; there is no pain in her leg. She sees that there is no
swelling also. Her life was in danger, she was unaware about it. God had already
listened to her prayers well in advance. There was a grandmother Dwarkamai,
who used to reside in Mumbai. No one else. Who would look after her 13-14 year
old daughter? God saved her. Then when she sprained her leg, she accepted that sprain as god’s
Prasad. So by sending that girl, by making her press that sprain, he saw to it that the pain disappears.
God had already listened to her prayers. Prayers were not done at all. She had done his prayers, but
god had heard the prayers well in advance. This is the power of prayers that everyday before sleeping
she used to pray for others. The entire day she used to recite Ramraksha 108 times and say while
sleeping at night that “oh lord whoever requires it the most put it in his account”. Not for 1-2 years,
sixty years of Ramraksha everyday 108 times. The day she expired, on the same day, as per the tithi
of her recitation (pathan) of Ramraksha, she had completed 60 years. 60 years!! Dear not upasana of
1 – 2 days, but upasana, prayers of 60 years, and that too for whom? Not even single day for her own
self. “The one who requires it the most, put it in his account oh lord”. This is the strength / power of
prayers.

We people must realize that we must regularly say our prayers. We must do naamsmaran. We
must also learn to do prayers in our own words. We will definitely read prayers written by others. But
we must also have a dialogue in our own words with god. We must speak with him. Meaning we must
open and keep our heart just the way it is in front of god. But how? Similar to how we see in Sai
Satcharita, if Baba says speak, then speak. If Baba tells to say no, and then say no, keep quiet. We
have seen repeatedly seen in the Sai Satcharita that if Baba asks to leave from Shirdi, then we should
leave on that itself. If we don’t leave then there will be a dilemma. If Baba asks to stay back and we
leave then also there would be a predicament. If Baba says not to speak then don’t speak. If we speak
then there will be a problem. If Baba says speak and we don’t then there will be crisis. Never forget
this thing. Because irrespective of how fast the speed is, in that speed also, in that Gati also,
how to maintain the stability is known only and only to God. And we can understand this from
the relation between the earth and the sun, the gati of this earth, and from its pradakshina. Hence
accept the ‘Pra’ of both pradakshina and prathana. ‘Pra’ is there in both pradakshina and prathana. We
must accept the words starting from ‘Pra’. Sthiti will automatically take its form.
