TANGGUYOB-HORN

• TANGGUYOB - A TRUMPET MADE FROM CARABAO’S


OR A COW’S HORN. THE PEOPLE BACK THEN TILL NOW
USED IT AS A WAY TO SUMMON PEOPLE FOR MEETINGS
OR FESTIVALS. THEY ALSO USED IT TO HERD THEIR
LIVESTOCKS, ESPECIALLY FOR COWS AND CARABAOS.
THE NAME TANGGUYOB REPRESENTS COOPERATION,
UNITY, AND DISCIPLINE AS PEOPLE USE THE HORN FOR
GATHERINGS AND TO HERD LIVESTOCKS.
UKULELE

• THE UKULELE IS GENERALLY MADE OF WOOD, THOUGH


VARIANTS HAVE BEEN COMPOSED PARTIALLY OR
ENTIRELY OF PLASTIC OR OTHER MATERIALS. CHEAPER
UKULELES ARE GENERALLY MADE FROM PLYWOOD OR
LAMINATED WOODS, IN SOME CASES WITH A
SOUNDBOARD OF A TONEWOOD SUCH AS SPRUCE.
MORE EXPENSIVE UKULELES ARE MADE OF SOLID
HARDWOODS SUCH AS MAHOGANY. THE
TRADITIONALLY PREFERRED WOOD FOR UKULELES IS A
TYPE OF ACACIA ENDEMIC TO HAWAII, CALLED KOA.
KUDYAPI

• THE KUDYAPI, ALSO KNOWN AS THE “KUTIYAPI” OR “KOTYAPI,”


IS A STRINGED INSTRUMENT THAT BELONGS TO THE PHILIPPINE
GROUP OF LUTES. IT IS MADE FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF WOOD
THAT IS HOLLOWED OUT AND HAS TWO STRINGS MADE OF NYLON
OR STEEL.
THE KUDYAPI HAS A LONG NECK AND A SMALL,
ROUNDED BODY.

• THE LONG NARROW NECK HAS TRACES OF A BEAS WAX ON ITS


FRONT WHERE A SERIES OF FRETS WERE ONCE LOCATED AND
WHICH JUST EXTENDS ONTO THE UPPER PART OF THE BODY. THE
HOOK-SHAPED HEAD HAS TWO TUNING PEGS OF WOOD WHICH
ARE CARVED INTO THE FORM OF ANIMAL HEADS. THE TWO
METAL STRINGS HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED.
TRADITIONAL CYMBALS

• CYMBAL, PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT CONSISTING OF A


CIRCULAR FLAT OR CONCAVE METAL PLATE THAT IS
STRUCK WITH A DRUMSTICK OR IS USED IN PAIRS STRUCK
GLANCINGLY TOGETHER.

• THEY HAVE SPIRITUAL FUNCTIONS, THEIR MYSTICAL


SOUND INCITING TO A FORM OF ELEVATION. THEY ARE
ALSO USED DURING WARLIKE EVENTS, THEIR POWER
BEING ABLE AS MUCH TO FRIGHTEN THE ENEMY.
RONDALLA

• THE RONDALLA IS AN ENSEMBLE OF STRINGED


INSTRUMENTS PLAYED WITH THE PLECTRUM OR PICK AND
GENERALLY KNOWN AS PLECTRUM INSTRUMENTS.

• RONDALYA ESPECIALLY ENDEAVORS TO ENCOURAGE


SEATTLE-AREA YOUTH TO CHERISH AND
APPRECIATE TRADITIONAL ASPECTS OF FILIPINO
AMERICAN CULTURE AS WELL AS SERVE AS A
CATALYST FOR INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE.
PATTETEG

• PATTETEG IS ALSO KNOWN AS PATTETEG AMONG THE


KALINGA PEOPLE. THE GROUP OF BAMBOO BLADES IS
MEANT TO SOUND LIKE A XYLOPHONE AND IS PLAYED BY
STRIKING THE BLADES WITH BAMBOO STICKS. IT HAS
SIX BLADES IN GRADUATED SIZES, PLAYED SEPARATELY
BY SIX PLAYERS.
BAMBOO FLUTE

• A TUBE-SHAPED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT WITH A HOLE


THAT YOU BLOW ACROSS AT ONE END WHILE HOLDING
THE TUBE OUT HORIZONTALLY

• THE SOUND OF THE BAMBOO FLUTE LEADS THE MIND


DIRECTLY INTO SPIRITUAL THOUGHT. IT IS MELLOW,
SOUL-HEALING AND REFLECTS THE MANY VOICES OF
NATURE.
DJEMBE

• A DJEMBE OR JEMBE IS A ROPE-TUNED SKIN-COVERED


GOBLET DRUM PLAYED WITH BARE HANDS, ORIGINALLY
FROM WEST AFRICA. ACCORDING TO THE BAMBARA
PEOPLE IN MALI, THE NAME OF THE DJEMBE COMES
FROM THE SAYING “ANKE DJÉ, ANKE BÉ” WHICH
TRANSLATES TO “EVERYONE GATHER TOGETHER IN
PEACE” AND DEFINES THE DRUM’S PURPOSE.
KULINTANG

• KULINTANG REFERS TO THE GONG AND DRUM


ENSEMBLE INDIGENOUS TO THE SULU AND MINDANAO
ISLANDS IN THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES AND NORTHERN
BORNEO. THE ENSEMBLE IS NAMED AFTER THE
PRINCIPAL KETTLE GONG INSTRUMENT.

• THE TRADITION OF KULINTANG GAVE FILIPINO


AMERICANS A MUSICAL MEANS TO FIND A SENSE OF
FILIPINO-NESS, A HERITAGE WITH WHICH MANY HAVE
MINIMAL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE.
