Years of Existence

● The Renaissance period spanned from the 14th century to the 17th century, and its art lasted from
roughly the 14th century to the 16th century.
The Renaissance lasted for nearly three centuries, in three successive periods: the Trecento (14th
century), the Quattrocento (15th century) and the Cinquecento (16th century).
Origin

● The origins of Renaissance art can be traced to Italy in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
The Renaissance began in Italy, the birthplace of the Roman Empire. Following the fall of the empire in
the 4th century, and the subsequent dark ages, the incredible art and ideas of Roman times were
temporarily lost. They were later rediscovered in Italy in around the 12th century, leading to the
Renaissance. There is some debate over the actual start of the Renaissance

● One of the key figures in the development of Renaissance art was Giotto di Bondone, a painter who

many of the preoccupations and concerns of the Italian High Renaissance, his paintings ushered in a
new era in painting that brought together religious antiquity and the developing idea of Renaissance
Humanism.

Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael creating some of the most famous works of art in
