Electromagnetic Waves

• Electromagnetic waves are

made up of oscillating
electric and magnetic fields
that propagate through
space at the speed of light.

• Spectrum of
electromagnetic waves
ranges from radio waves to
gamma rays.

Scattering of Electromagnetic Wave

• We can see objects because of the electromagnetic waves interact with the object a
process called scattering. To see object, we need incoming electromagnetic wave
from the source, the object, scattering wave, and detector

• Scattering occurs when an electromagnetic wave interacts with an object. The object
can be any size, from atoms to large objects like buildings or mountains. There are
different types of scattering, including Rayleigh scattering and Mie scattering.
