STATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF STRESS-LAMINATED TIMBER
FOOTBRIDGE

name of student
We have a simply supported, stress-laminated timber footbridge given in the picture below. The bridge
is loaded by its self weight, a uniformly distributed pedestrian load qk = 5 kN/m2 (q = 1,35), and an
equivalent concentrated traffic load Fk which is located in the middle of the span in longitudinal
direction. The moisture content of the timber material is 14%.

Geometrical data:
leff (m) = 6
bd (m) = 3,4
hd (mm) = 200
Thickness of a lamination:
blam (mm) = 40
= 0,8
Characteristic value of the traffic load (equivalent concentrated load of the maintenance vehicle):
Fk (kN) = 40 Q = 1,5
Specific characteristic value of the railing (on both sides together):
gk (kg/m) = 110 G = 1,35
Material of the laminations:
Sawn timber: C18 Environmental class: 3
Data on the cross-tensioning:
lp (m) = 1,1
Initial pre-stressing force for one bar:
Fp0 (kN) = 170
Size of the square-shaped steel plate washer:
a (mm) = 150

Tasks to be prepared:
1. Verify the bridge deck for bending and shear considering the system strength of the laminations!
The effective deck width must be determined by the “accurate” method! The pedestrian load and the traffic
load can be applied to the bridge at the same time as an approximation.
2. Verify the deck in cross-direction for inter-laminar slip! Also verify the outer timber lamination for
compressive stresses perpendicular to grains at the anchoring place of tension bars!
3. Verify the bridge for pedestrian comfort criteria, considering vertical and horizontal vibrations! Use
the approximate method from EN 1995-2 Annex B for the calculation! The criteria of average
comfort level must be examined. Cases to be examined in terms of pedestrian loads:
- the bridge is loaded by a distinct group of pedestrians (n=13)
- the bridge is loaded by a continuous stream of pedestrians (n=0,6·A)
