Design of Isolated Spread

Footings
Design objectives:
 Determine the required footing
Area/footing Size.
Governed by the Bearing Pressure formula
Determine the required thickness of the
footing.
 Determine the required amount of
reinforcement.
The process of which is exactly the same as RC
beams.
Design of Isolated Spread
Footings
Getting the required footing area:
Column is to rest directly on the Will result in a situation where the
soil. footing will penetrate through the
soil.
Pcol
Design of Isolated Spread
Footings
Getting the required footing area:
Pcol
The footing distributes the column
load over a larger area thus
preventing the column to
penetrate through the soil.

The footing will be supported by the

Soil Bearing Capacity (q) of the soil
Design of Isolated Spread
Footings
Getting the required footing area:
Pcol Following the Bearing Formula:

Pcol
q=
A
Where:
Pcol = Total Column load
Inclusive of Floor loads, weight
of the column, & weight of the
q q footing.
(assumed to be 10% of the sum
of the other loads)
A = required footing Area

Example: The total load from the column was computed
to be 500 KN. If the q = 96 Kpa what will be the
required footing dimension?
Design of Isolated Spread
Footings
Determining the required footing thickness:
The thickness of the footing will be governed by three
aspects:
 Due to bending
 Due to beam shear
Note:
Due to punching shear Instead of computing for the required
thickness, it is easier to assume first
then check against the allowable
stresses.
As per NSCP, the minimum
1.20 m thickness for ISF is 300mm
