Introduction
WGSN’s A/W 24/25 forecasts explore how the macro themes covered in our
STEPIC reports (examining Society, Technology, the Environment, Politics,
Industry and Creativity) will filter down to seasonal product development.
Expanded Imagination is driven by developments in Technology and Creativity.

Over the coming years, artificial intelligence will be embraced as a facilitator of new
forms of creativity, and human imagination will be prized as a tool for problem-solving,
innovation and escapism amid an ongoing polycrisis. The metaverse will also make it
easier for us to inhabit our own interest-based spaces, making niche the new normal.
This will result in products and aesthetics that are unique and at times uncanny,
whether it be physical items that look as sleek as digital renders, or digital humans who
look and sound (almost) like the real thing. Expect to see more futuristic and fluid
forms, as well as changeable finishes with ombré and sprayed effects, or haptic textures,
or materials and ingredients that react to different stimuli. We will also see the re-
emergence of surrealism, which first flourished in the upheaval of the 1920s, and will
find fresh relevance amid the polycrisis of the 2020s as designers reject rationalism and
turn old ideas such as classicism on their head.
The duality of our digital and physical lives will inspire twinning or pairing themes,
taking the form of doppelganger designs with details that mirror each other, as well as
reflective materials, symmetrical patterns, and products that have two halves or
surprising sides (think modular designs, transformable furniture, or multifaceted make-
up and beauty products). This interest in duality will also be seen in an exploration not
only of the sunny side of self-expression, but also the darker, more introspective aspects
of human existence. Johana Kroft

Hyper-prep
The concept: as we look beyond established
cultural capitals of fashion and music in order
to embrace local talents and micro-
communities, expect traditional themes like
preppy aesthetics to be reworked with new
colours and silhouettes. This will not only speak
Tommy Hilfiger
to a broader audience, but also evoke a fun and
mood-boosting feel that expands upon the
concept of 'main character energy'.
Key items: reignite typical prep items such as
the varsity jacket, the oversized blazer and the Paade Mode Blanc
intarsia sweater vest with high-octane prints
and patterns. Embellish blazers and cardigans
with badges to add an extra boost of character.
Add maximum impact to footwear and
accessories by using vibrant colour-blocking Camper
and personalisation – examples include stickers
for tech accessories, and create-your-own
beading packs for jewellery.
Materials: source GRS recycled cotton for shirts
and dresses. Use RWS/ZQ merino wools and
RMS mohair for knitwear. Explore deadstock
materials for blazers, appliqués and soft
accessories.
Relevant for: all categories The Little Blazer Company Petit Pays Vintage @on_zi_

3
Neu-classics
The concept: in the polycrisis era, the focus will
be on long-term items that can retain their
value and resale relevance while still being
special enough to sway the consumer to make
the purchase. Stripped-back designs with a
minimalist feel come to the fore here, all while
paying close attention to balanced details.
Details: step hems, cutouts and clever pleating
all have their place in this story. The button-
front shirt is a perfect vehicle for this trend,
Marlmarl Gris
with crisp construction and carefully
considered cuts. For knitwear, cutouts and
peek-a-boo designs allow for the
undergarments to stand out, making way for
cross-category buys.
Innovation: the future of footwear is 3D
printing, and it is expected to go mainstream by
2025. This provides a cost-effective and
sustainable solution for reducing
manufacturing waste and enabling mass
customisation. Look to brands like Dior, which
is creating 3D-printed footwear in hybrid
silhouettes that can fit into a wide range of
gender-inclusive themes.
Iplant @dior Nunuforme
Relevant for: shirting, jackets, sweaters,
bottoms, cardigans, footwear

4
Spirited away
The concept: #LowKeyLuxury and
#ElegantSimplicity are intertwined with
synthetic creativity in this mysterious yet
understated occasionwear story. AI design adds
a layer of fantasy to this direction, with digital
graphics and conceptualised fashion items
Paade Mode
inspired by creative outputs from the likes of
Midjourney, DALL.E 2 and OpenAI.
Materials: this links to our Ghosted Illusions
material direction, where tulle and technical
plains have a ghost-like appearance. The Anja Schwerbrock Arch & Line
addition of pearlescent shimmer brings a
phygital edge to designs. Prioritise BCI- and
GOTS-certified organic cotton, RWS-certified
merino worsteds, FSC-certified viscose, lyocell
and ahimsa silk. @team.kawaii.ai

Licensing: keep an eye out for The Last Unicorn

film – a remake of the cult 80s classic, which
will land in theatres in 2024. Casper is making
its return with a live-action TV series in the
works at Peacock, set to debut later this year.

footwear, knitwear, digital apparel, digital
footwear

Expressive slopes
The concept: 'main character energy' inspires
items that have heightened and expressive
personalities. This concept has its roots in
social media, where people are creating videos
that place themselves as the main character in a
show or book. For kidswear, the trend is all
Bethan Laura Wood
about embracing subcultures such as
skateboarding and snowboarding, while
amplifying confidence and creativity.
Print and pattern: expressive prints take
inspiration from rebellious spray paint and Hiro Giphy
skate culture, where ombrés, tie-dyes and
winter graphics are recharged with
transformative sprayed techniques.
Sustainability: be sure to use Fairtrade and GRS
recycled cotton, RWS- or ZQ-certified wool, and Manila Grace

GRS-verified or recycled polyester and nylon.

Use recycled yarns for cold weather accessories.
For wadding, look into innovative bio-fibre fill
to make cosiness biodegradable.
Relevant for: active, ski, outerwear, cold
weather accessories, knitwear, separates, sets

6
Transformable occasion
The concept: in line with the 2025 Fashion Big
Idea: Preservation Mode, we will see businesses
create versatile products that can be easily
transformed to give them a longer lifespan. This
is where modular occasionwear and the
rental/resale market will shine, moving
sustainable occasionwear into exchangeable
occasionwear.
Silhouette and styling: start with a core base
such as a long-sleeve tee, a simple A-line dress,
Caroline Bosmans UPA
a button-up shirt or an everyday blazer. Develop
add-on features that can be tied or snapped
on/off to create a dressed-up party look through
transformable design.
Influences: be inspired by influential kidswear
brands such as UPA from Ireland, which has
created a little black dress that comes with a
range of shoulder details to bring sustainability
to the next level. Vietnamese brand Figi Studios
redefines gender-inclusive silhouettes with add-
on details that make a statement. Latvia-based
brand Paade Mode adds playful ruffles to items
through easy tie-on sashes, which can be used
to create a dressy accent for coats and blazers.
Figi Studios Nikolia @paademode
Relevant for: dresses, blazers, suiting, skirts,
blouses, woven tops

7
Trompe l'oeil
The concept: this narrative is underpinned by
details and designs that blur the lines between
digital and IRL aesthetics, as we move into an
age of strategic imagination. The surreal
qualities that embody our S/S 24 SenseScapes
forecast are expanded upon with the comeback
Morley for Kids
of true trompe l'oeil trends.
Print and pattern: from subtle iterations such
as defining black lines that can give the illusion
of depth, to full trompe l'oeil pieces such as the
jacket from Thom Browne or Loewe's show- Thom Browne Loewe
stopping glitch garments, familiar eye trick
graphics bring Minecraft-like aesthetics to life.
Give stripes a digital overhaul through glitch
and pattern-on-pattern effects.
Colour: black and white are safe choices for this @nikolia_kidswear

theme, but pastels such as Glacial Blue, Cool

Matcha and Gentle Lavender also have their
place. Combined, this palette has the ability to
transcend digital, party and sporty narratives.
Relevant for: dresses, knitwear, digital
garments, separates, soft accessories

8
Tactile minimalism
The concept: this narrative is centred on a
design ethos that aims to offer protection and
help consumers alleviate anxiety through a
layered approach. Move from personalised to
individualised products, which are curated
around a strong sense of wellbeing.
Finger in the Nose
Details: layers are key in this story. Develop a
small capsule with items that work well
singularly as well as harmoniously together.
Trims are minimal, and the focus is on each
layer having its own distinction, whether that Little Creative Factory Infantium Victoria
be through grids and quilting, rounded and
calming designs, or soft curled edges.
Circularity: invest in circularity, where
materials are constructed with reclaimed
melange yarns, slubs and natural fibres such as Giphy

linen, hemp, banana or nettle. Imperfections

are made beautiful, with subtle differences
between each layer becoming more apparent as
pieces are put together, mimicking the layers of
granite or stone. Use dissolvable or matching
thread for a fully recyclable collection at the
end of its lifecycle.
Relevant for: knitwear, separates, tees, sets, all-
in-ones, dresses, loungewear, sleepwear Sean Thornhill Gris @satisfyrunning

9
Digital cosy
The concept: this story emerges as a reaction
against the clunky and overly conceptualised
fashion stemming from the metaverse, as we
dip into Layered Realities. It embraces the
softer side of tech, inspiring a new wave of IRL
fashion that will work well both on- and off-
screen.
Influences: London-based AGR's A/W 22/23
collection encapsulates this story perfectly, with
pixelated, digitally printed cable knits and
Lemon Magazine Balabala
energetic colours. The unreleased Louis Vuitton
x Nike Air Force 1 shoe by Virgil Abloh also fit
neatly into this cosy digital story, with plush
material that appear to be digitally printed.
Innovation: fashion schools across the globe
are adding meta-education classes to their
curriculum. Parsons (US) and Roblox are
partnering to offer a Digital Fashion course,
while Drexel University (US) now offers a course
titled Costuming in the Metaverse, and the
Fashion Institute of Technology (US) will now
offer blockchain and NFT courses. The Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology
(HKUST) announced plans to launch
@hypebeast @agrknit @flaurese_
MetaHKUST, which will be a VR campus set
inside the metaverse, awarding blockchain-
secured diplomas and NFT transcripts.
Relevant for: outerwear, footwear, knitwear,
hoodies, cardigans, digital apparel, digital
footwear
