Action Points
1. Embrace the dark side: a focus on escapism and
alternative realities in times of uncertainty will see
horror-infused themes gain ground across product
categories. Combine hardware details and colours
for dramatic effect, creating a product mix that is
both unsettling and enticing. Burnished effects
create a sense of otherworldly decay.
2. Transition springs dystopian silhouettes: S/S 21's
dark mood will continue to influence fashion,
allowing for an easy flow of transseasonal products
in a monochrome palette. Stories focus on modern
gothic and biker themes. For younger consumers,
look to alternative underground subcultures for
inspiration.
3. Create drama through dark baroque themes:
luxurious materials and historic embellishment
details offer new opportunities for holiday and
partywear designs.
4. Redefine history: a continued focus on 'old
meets new' styling provides a great opportunity to
introduce #repurposed materials and components.

Modern Gothic

@mar t ino campar i @vit aly

The concept: S/S 21's Dark Romance theme will transition into
autumn, with dystopian and gothic styling continuing to
influence fashion in a transseasonal monochrome palette.
Details: Focus on designs that are pared-back and minimal, but
contemporary in terms of shape. Constructions that look
uncomfortable and unfamiliar define this story, featuring
squared toes and extended soles. Break up all-black looks with
surface embellishment, including extended tassels. Rework
gothic motifs, such as the crucifix, in geometric forms.
Materials: Be mindful of the environment and use premium
durable leathers to create long-lasting designs. Explore a
cellulosic proof finish with tanneries for glossy options.

Road Rage
The concept: Biker themes re-emerge across footwear and
accessories for A/W 21/22, offering a utility story with a luxury
futuristic edge. Inspiration comes from traditional motorcycle
gear that is used to evolve S/S 21's dystopian themes. Yang Li is
a key reference; the brand collaborated with band The Jesus and
Mary Chain for S/S 20.
Materials & details: Designs take on a tough utility aesthetic and
must be protective and hardwearing. These qualities are
accentuated through giant, tire-like bumper and platform soles,
oversized chunky curb chain straps, bondage-style over-belting, @prad a
and matte and high-shine finishes. Focus on durable materials,
including responsibly sourced leather and rubber.

The Horror

@clo cksand co lo ur s

@glamcult @bur ber r y

The concept: This story reflects the broadening influence of

horror themes that are starting to impact fashion.
Details: Horror films and literature drive a narrative for
hardware and motifs. Figurative skulls, snakes and spider webs
are key symbols, and dipped and dripping surfaces reflect
blood-like finishes in the season's must-have red tones. Create
sophisticated silhouettes grounded in luxury, rather than kitsch
throwaway products. Miansai's 14K vampire grill is a great
example – retailing at $10,000, this design is made to last.
Materials: To define this theme, use slick waterproof materials,
patent and glossy leathers, exploring cellulosic proof finishing.

Club Rats
The concept: This youth-driven story takes inspiration from
underground subcultures, fuelled by a punk-like rebellion.
Fashion references span from 1980s to 2000s clubwear, and
sophisticated fetish and horror elements also feature.
Materials & details: Combine hardware and mixed fabrications
to create texture, utilising repurposed waste materials and
trims. Use #chunkychains, harness strapping and platform
soles for detail updates across fashion silhouettes.
Prints & graphics: Look to cult label Stray Rats as a reference
for prints and graphics. The brand's style is grounded in pop

culture, hardcore music and streetwear; all elements that sit
perfectly within this trend.

History Redefined
The concept: A renewed interest in #neorenaissance and
#antiqueaesthetic trends will see S/S 21's Historical Digital
theme seamlessly move into A/W, with a continued focus on
'old meets new' decade-clashing silhouettes.
Materials & details: Use details with a historic flourish to
convey this trend, referencing and merging eras from the
1890s to the 1980s. Opulent embellishment, ornate estate
jewellery and mixed prints combine with velvet, lace and
vibrant brocades to set the tone. The nostalgic designs of
Moscow-based Atelier Odor provide inspiration.

The concept: Building on the #antiqueaesthetic trending on

WGSN's Fashion Feed, dramatic and opulent Baroque
influences return for the Holiday season, tapping into
Phantasmagoria's dark underlying mood.
Materials & details: This trend is all about embellishment
through historical flourishes and luxury materials, including
vibrant brocade and velvet. Detail applications are introduced
through pearls, semi-precious stones, antique buckles and
ornate castings and closures. The cameo returns as a key
motif.

Burnished
The concept: The growing trend for raw adornments and
distressed finishes moves in a new direction, with burnished
effects creating a sense of otherworldly decay.
Materials & colour: Introduce rusted-look leathers and soft
accessories that reference the importance of red this season.
Practical camouflage canvas materials are also key and work
to create this look.
Details: Raw materials with aged surfaces are essential for
jewellery ranges and provide metal hardware updates.
