Details &
Trims

Details and trims will evolve with shifting design

priorities in S/S 22, as co-crafting, longevity and multi-
use products become more important

Mo t her o f Pear l
Introduction
In the wake of global health and economic challenges, design
will be driven by a new set of values as consumers shift to
new ways of living and spending. Trims and details will
become important tools for updating leftover stock and
reviving volume-selling core ranges.
Speak to a growing demand for multipurpose products with
components that facilitate adaptability. Versatility and
durable function should be key design priorities, as modular
design rapidly expands from outerwear to other categories.
As the climate emergency continues, push forward with
sustainable sourcing. GRS recycled polyester or PET and
GOTS-certified organic cotton remain the most commercial
sustainable developments. However, steady consumer
demand and an industry-wide focus on material innovation
will raise the profile of corozo, bio-based materials, recycled
composites and traceable shell. Transparency is key. Expect
to see certifications and evidence-based information to
support claims of sustainable and ethical production.
The rise of co-crafting will make a lasting impact, nurturing a
new appreciation of craft among consumers. Leverage local
communities by collaborating with craft cooperatives. A
growing disapproval for throwaway fashion will shift
perceptions of frivolous embellishment. Material repurposing
and creative upcycling will open up new avenues in this area.

The concept: An increased desire for creating intimate connection with apparel
through restorative materials will inspire a new wave of calming, matte-finish trims.
Surface & materials: Focus on dull surface finishes that are smooth and soft to the
touch. For buttons and small components, explore shortened tumbling processes
that reduce energy and water usage in comparison to high-shine finishes. Test the
durability of lower-impact water-based coatings for D-rings, rivets and snap
fastenings. Peached-finish textiles or suede work well for tapes, ribbons and zip
pulls.
How to implement: Matte-surface finishes have timeless appeal. Invest in high-
quality, durable trims and components to ensure products have functional longevity.

The concept: Minerals and crystals lead a new direction for solid
material components, as consumers seek comfort in 'healing' objects.
Surface & materials: Be inspired by Caroline Perino, who uses polished
agate and quartz as considered embellishments. Source recycled
polyester or PET, plus resin or jesmonite components with organic
surface patterns. Increase your proportion of recycled materials by
investigating waste material developments from ABM, which recycle
gemstone processing waste into buttons and beads.
How to implement: Use mined stones sparingly to guarantee ethical
sourcing and provenance. Otherwise, use replications to add character
to statement accessories and eveningwear.

The concept: In times of uncertainty, consumers embrace New

Mythologies and the reassurance of traditional craft processes.
Surface & materials: Ancient materials such as bronze, ceramic, stone
and wood are all key here. Take inspiration from jewellery designer
Alice Waese, who sculpts noble materials into roughly strewn forms.
Use carving, tooling and embossing to create authentically worn and
crafted surfaces that celebrate imperfect marks and irregular earthen
qualities.
How to implement: Less is more when it comes to eveningwear
embellishments. Think sustainably and use authentically crafted
details in placements applications.

The concept: As agricultural byproducts and harvested materials

remain a driving force behind sustainable material innovation, evolve
encased flower developments that evoke a closeness to nature.
Surface & materials: Draw surface inspiration from Organoid
Technologies' compressed sheet materials, made from agricultural
waste. For embroidery, mono-materials are key for recyclability.
Colour: Diversify your colour options for summer months with petal
tones and soft neutrals that are inspired by natural dyes and pigments.
How to implement: Save premium encased flower developments for
high-pricer point evening and partywear. Embroideries and digitally
printed trims are better suited for commercial applications.

The concept: Use trims and embellishments with luxurious tactility to hone in on a

growing desire for products that speak to the senses and create intimacy.
Surface & materials: Source vintage trims and components as inspiration, from
sumptuous longline fringing and delicate grosgrain ribbons to fabric-covered
buttons. Use silk, organic mercerised cotton and lyocell to add a subtle sheen to
woven trims. Source trims with a circular mindset, favouring single-fibre
compositions or avoiding material blends that cannot be separated at end-of-life.
How to implement: Use tactile fringing and indulgent woven trims in place of
excessive embellishments for sensual lingerie and boudoir-inspired eveningwear.

The concept: Moving forward, consumers will seek out materials that have bacteria-
resistant properties. Prioritise copper, silver and zinc to meet this desire.
Surface & materials: Focus on smooth, gently brushed surface finishes that have a
calm and soothing tactility. Investigate lower-impact options for buttons and rivets,
such as recycled metals, or alternative finishing processes that avoid harmful
electroplating chemicals, developed by Red Button and Frameless Asia Pacific.
How to implement: Identify core ranges where small sustainable adaptations will
make a big impact. Statement components work best on investment pieces with true
longevity, as championed by Mother of Pearl.

The concept: As modular design rapidly expands from outerwear into

other categories and versatility becomes a driver of value, use
components that adapt items into multi-use products.
Surface & materials: Design intelligent, functional trims into products.
Think open-ended zips for detachable pockets, hiking-inspired
carabiner clips for removable accessories and multi-button details for
adaptable sizing. Create long-lasting products with high-quality,
durable materials such as GRS recycled polyester and PET or metal.
How to implement: Consider adaptable components as standalone
items. Draw inspiration from A Cold Wall's purchasable hardware
packages that give the power of modification to the consumer.

The concept: Versatility and longevity have been accelerated as key

design priorities. Design into these concepts with a sustainable
mindset by using low-impact, unprocessed natural fibres for everyday
trims.
Surface & materials: Take things back to basics and focus on trims and
components that are adaptable and timeless. Certified organic cotton,
hemp, linen and jute are key materials here. Favour single-composition
products for improved recyclability after garment disassembly.
Colour: Reduce chemical and water use by working with the natural
colours and irregularities of unprocessed materials and fibres.
How to implement: Think with a circular mindset and identify products
where you can match component and material fibre compositions.

The concept: Conjure feelings of nostalgia by celebrating the imperfect

nature of sandy sediments and washed-up coastal materials.
Surface & materials: As sustainable sourcing gains momentum, forgo
uniformity and be open to working with the organic irregularities of
unpolished, traceable mother of pearl, recycled composites and
timeworn patina finishes. Be inspired by the charm of washed-up
natural materials such as shell, driftwood and tumbled pebbles. Source
responsibly and demand traceability for shell and wood components.
How to implement: Subtlety is key for improved value-per-wear. A
nuanced take on beach-inspired motifs and materials will offer the
most versatility, whether vacationing or staycationing.

recycled polyester, acetate and stone. Work with your suppliers to
explore new compositions, or to increase the proportion of recycled
materials within your current range.
How to implement: Speckled and granular finishes offer a more
commercial take for this direction. Save graphic mosaic or micro-scale
terrazzo designs for statement self-belt details and feature fastenings.

mechanically and chemically recycled polyester and PET for zip tapes.
Colour: Keep things simple in two- or three-tone blocking to ensure
trims and components have longevity. Identify carry-over colours and
match these with core neutrals or energetic brights for a playful mood.
How to implement: Update core items or leftover stock with fun yet
functional components.
