SHIFTING OTIS SSD

Page 2/4

1. Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to:
- Provide details on Shifting an otis SSD.
- Ensure that opening or closing SSD steps are followed during slickline intervention.

2. Scope of application
This procedure is applicable to Slickline job execution at well site.

3. Responsibility
Engineer or specialist (Work Supervisor) is responsible for this procedure application.

4. Description

Required Tooling
 Rope Socket
 Stem
 Knuckle Joint or Swivel
 Spang Jar
 Hydraulic or Tension Jar
 shifting Tool, depends on the SSD type

Operational Procedure B-Shifting tool

1. Test all surface equipment prior to entering the wellbore. Note any tight spots or restrictions
in tubing encountered.
2. Use a standard tool string with appropriate gauge ring and drift tubing to allow access to the
lowest point in well (below lowest SSDs requiring intervention) or nipple in tubing to assure
clearance. A drift run should be equal to the maximum OD of the Shifting Tool and/or
plug/standing valve diameter.
Pressure calculations shall be applied at this time. Ensure that fluid volumes have been
calculated and, if necessary, pressure is applied to the tubing to prevent “underbalanced”
.conditions that could possibly cause tools to be kicked up hole when it opens the SSD

Use the proper Shifting Tool for the SSD present in the well. Some recommendations are to use
a rope socket below the shifting tool to prevent damage to the bottom thread of the tooland to use
a space bar below the Span jar to prevent erosion during the equalization process through the
SSD equalization ports if the SSD is OTIS. Proper identification can be made once the SSD type
.and latch have been identified in tubing schematic and details
3. Must use the appropriate Shifting tool for tool sting.

The well condition, fluid weight, depth of the SSD, deviation, well type, and time
without operating the SSD selected for the intervention are very important factors
.to consider when having difficulties reaching the job objective
If you are contemplating installing any plug or devices in the SSD, a Gauge cutter
must be used to confirm that the plug can pass through and will be installed
.without problem

4. (Opening in Up direction) RIH with the assembly to below the selected SSD in the case of
more than one SSD in the completion string. This should start with the deepest station to be
changed out. Shifting tool is then raised slowly through the SSD until the locating profile on
the shifting tool contacting the SSD stops. Approximately 200-300 lbs of over tension should
be pulled with the slickline to confirm the tool “latched the dog”. The tools are then lowered
until an increase of weight indicates that the shifting tool has located the SSD. An upward jar
securely connects the shifting tool to the SSD profile with the dogs.
5. Around 10-15 upward jars are needed to reach through and prevent breaking the shears pin in
the shifting tool to reach open or close position of the SSD. The tool string can then be
retrieved from the well.
6. (Opening in Down direction) RIH with assembly to above the selected SSD in the case of
more than one SSD in the completion string. This should start with the upper station to be
changed out. Shifting tool is then lower slowly through the SSD until the locating profile on
the shifting tool contacting the SSD stops. The tool will lose weight as soon as the tool latch
the dogs. Downward jarring securely connects the shifting tool to the SSD profile with the
dogs.
7. Jar down the tool string until the tool pass the SSD freely without losing weight.
8. For operations to close the SSD it is the same procedure but in this case the need to reduce the
risk of a blowout of the completion string due to the spaces not being open causing over
pressure. The same difficultly and circumstance can be found during this process so all well
condition must be considered.

Note: Pressures of both the tubing and annulus should be observed and recorded
prior to operating the SSD, there must be an appropriate change indicating that the
.SSD is moved and there is pressure communication

At the surface, the shear pins conditions must be verified that they are in good
condition confirming that was success the operation of the SSD. Also, the change
.of pressures can be a good indication to confirm the status of the SSD
When there is an available pump use it to confirm there is circulation between the
annulus and tubing, or in contraries case to confirm that there is no communication
.between both spaces
9. In the case of the shear pins are broken, it is necessary to repeat the operation.
10. If several runs are not sufficient to reach the objective of the operation, it may be necessary to
add weight to the tool string, as well as, add a knuckle joint for a more effective jarring action
etc. All these actions can be applied according with the circumstances and condition of the
well.
