Type test of PVS cells and blocks according to IEC 61 427:2002-04
Product Group: Vented lead acid cells with positive tubular plates
The test procedure is shown in figure 1. The test starts with a fully charged battery and a 10h rate
discharge of 9 hours down to 10% state of charge (SOC). Then 50 “winter cycles” with 30% charge
and 30% discharge are performed. A charging factor of 1,03 is included to compensate for side
reactions. After charging passing the 50 cycles a recharge to 100% SOC has to be done, followed
by discharging with 1.25 × I10h within 2 hours alternates with 6-hour charging with I10h, while the
voltage is restricted to 2.40 V × 6 cells. After 100 such “summer cycles” a C10h capacity test is
performed. This test sequence with 150 PV-cycles is repeated, until during “winter cycles” the
voltage drops below 1.50 V × number of cells or the actual C10h capacity is lower than 0.8 × rated
C10h. The capacity test takes place at reference room temperature, while the cycling takes place at
40°C to get an accelerating effect of the test.

Results:
The following Figure 3 shows a typical timing diagram of the single cells. The cell temperature was
between 39,4 and 41,6°C (required 40°C ±3 K), the mean value was 40,5°C.
In Figure 4 the results of the C10 capacity test done in each sequence are shown. Both types,
single cell as well as block battery performed very good. The block battery has performed 2.700
cycles, whether the single cells have reached 3.150 cycles.

We apply here the temperature correction factor for the number of cycles and the cycle life used
for traction batteries in ZVEI notes, Germany: Here a temperature difference of 20 K higher equals
a reduction of the number of cycles of 50%. So at 40°C we estimate the factor 1 and at 25°C the
factor 1,60. So we can calculate the number of cycles and the cycle life at different temperatures
and get the current results of the tests for real expected temperatures. The service life in years was
calculated by the number of cycles divided by 365 days per year (see Table 2).
