Lithium-ion Battery Thermal Management

System Using Thermoelectric Module

❖ Main Objective :- “Maintain the constant temperature of battery between 15 to 30°C

by providing required Heating and cooling for obtaining maximum performance and
capacity of the battery”

❖ Components Specifications:-
Lithium ion Battery (24V-8AH), Peltier Module (TEC12704), Heat Sink, Booster
Pump, ESP Microcontroller, 8 Channel Relay panel, Cooling Tubes and Heat exchangers,
cooling Fan, etc.

❖ Working Principle :-
Lithium-ion battery temperature variations are maintained constant between 20-
30 °C, irrespective of various Thermal causes of battery temperature rise and at any
environmental conditions using Thermoelectric effect of Peltier. Here, A novel new design
based on the combination of forced air cooling, liquid cooling, and TEC is analyzed here. The
battery is designed and placed alongside in the center of the BTMS model of the cooling tubes.
Flowing liquid takes away a considerable amount of heat generated by the battery during
operation. A water pump is used to drive liquid circulation. The TEC module is used to manage
the temperature of the coolant afterward. Lastly, the hot end of the TEC will be cooled by the
heat sink and fan attached to it. The microcontroller based BMS system is used to regulate the
supply to TEC module and also supply to solenoid valve.
The system operates in 4 different modes having :
1. Heating Mode :- Only peltier module with heating side of peltier in use.
2. Normal mode :- With only Ventilation fan
3. Cooling mode :- Less power peltier system and cooling tubes with cooling fan
4. Boost cooling mode :- Full power peltier system and cooling tubes with cooling fan
