Smart Light
 PESTEL Analysis of Smart Light.

MARKETING MANAGEMENT

1. Political Factors:

 Governments are adopting smart lighting projects to save energy and money.
As per a report by the US Energy Information Administration, around 39%
of total energy cost is incurred through lighting. It has been observed that
smart LED lighting has the ability to reduce energy costs in office buildings
and industrial installations by 90%.
 Factors such as high demand for cost-effective and energy-saving LED
lighting, government campaign towards LED adoption, and the need for
replacing traditional lighting are expected to fuel the growth of the industrial
and commercial LED lighting market. However, voltage sensitivity and
temperature dependence are expected to hinder the market growth. On the
contrary, surge in need for smart lighting is expected to offer lucrative
opportunities for industrial and commercial LED lighting market expansion
 Other factors that are propelling the growth of the global Bluetooth LED
bulb market include declining prices of LED lights and supportive
government initiatives.
 In India, the government supported the plan of deploying cost-effective
LED’s across the end-users has received a warm response. According to the
government, LED adoption was driving an annual energy savings of over
3,340 crore kWh and resulting in avoidance of over 6,725 MW of peak
demand. Also, the growing smart homes market in India is expected to
increase the demand for Bluetooth LED lights.

2. Economic Factors:
 Because smart lights are LEDs, they are highly efficient and use much less
energy than incandescent lights. So, if you compare smart lights to
incandescent, then yes. They do save considerable energy and — thus —
money!
 However, when you compare smart lights to regular LEDs, the cost
outweighs the money savings you get from switching to LEDs. Smart lights
cost considerably more than regular LED lights. Plus, they’re a vampire
appliance, meaning they suck energy when the lights are off.
 If you have only a few smart lights, you most likely won’t even notice it on
your bill. However, if you’ve installed several smart lights because you
enjoy on-demand mood lighting or many of your appliances are on standby
mode throughout your home, their combined energy usage can prevent you
from saving money — which no one ever wants to hear.
 With rapid urbanization and rapid economic growth, the lighting industry is
expected to grow exponentially over the next two decades, resulting in more
high demand for LED-based lighting. Thus, the need for more LED-based
lighting for effective energy saving and cost saving is expected to drive the
Industrial and commercial LED lighting market growth in the coming years.

 Less energy consumption

LED lights use 40–80% less electricity and have at least 5 times the life
expectancy than regular High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures. LED lamps are 7
times more energy efficient than incandescent and twice as efficient as
fluorescent lamps.

 Higher efficiency and low light pollution due to directional light

LED lights with a lower lumen output can replace conventional lamps with a
higher output. For example, a 30 W LED street light can often replace an 80 W
High Pressure Sodium lamp. The reason for this is directionality. LED street
lamps are very directional and the light output is much more than other street
lamps. Also there is little or no hot spot under the LED lamp. The light emitted
from the LED lamp is directed downwards, spread throughout the entire area it
covers. This means that a lower amount of light is needed to properly illuminate
the area. This also dramatically reduces glare and light pollution which affects
the mood of human beings, navigation in birds and insects, mating behavior in
animals and flowering in plants.
 Long life: up to 100.000 hours

LED lights last much longer than conventional lamps (4 to 8 times longer). This
result in less expense in replacing the lights themselves but also the labor to
replace the lamp is needed less often. This provides a great cost savings by
itself.

Also the loss of brightness or lumen depreciation is slower over the life of an
LED lamp than that of sodium or other lamp. So not only does the LED have a
longer life span than the conventional lamp, but it stays brighter longer than
other lamps. The long life span reduces maintenance expenses and makes these

5

lights particularly suitable for difficult to reach locations and for streetlights
where maintenance costs can be significant.

Lifetime and Lumen maintenance compression between LED and HID lights is
illustrated in Figure 1. The comparison shows that relamping of HID fixture is
required to be done 5 times to achieved one base life time of LED, considering
the relamping is required when the Lumen reduces to 70% of
initial lamp Lumen.
 Easily controllable

The light is easily controllable with intelligent systems. The light can be turned
on and off instantly and can be dimmed for added energy savings at dawn, dusk,
and also during hours of low traffic. Switching on–off and dimming does not
affect the life-time of the luminaire as in the case of fluorescent lights.

 Reducing carbon footprint

The carbon footprint of LED street lights is smaller than other lights due to
lower energy usage. Moreover, LEDs last 4 to 8 times longer than any other
lights, further reducing the carbon footprint of manufacture over the life time.
From another angle, wide range application of LED in a country my give better
chance to sale there international quota in CO2 emission to other countries.

 Dark-sky friendly

Because of the directional light, light is carefully distributed exactly where it is

meant to go and therefore there is no or little light which is wasted by
illuminating the night sky or very low background light contribution. This is a
considerable plus especially if the local community has a Dark-sky Initiative.

 Natural light spectre Colour rendering index

6
MARKETING MANAGEMENT

It is worth to mention here that for example LED street lamps with colour
temperature 3.500–4.200 K are rendering more natural light than the yellow of
sodium lamps or green of fluorescent streetlights. Also no UV or IR radiation is
emitted from the LED street lamps. Colour rendering index (CRI) is high (80–
90) and displays natural colours of illuminated objects. This reflect actual
colour of the objects.

 Free of harmful substances and lower environmental impact

LED luminaires contain no harmful substances, like mercury, lead or other

hazardous chemical and gasses. Spent LED lamps can be thrown away without
any special handling or disposal requirement, since they are recyclable and
environmentally friendly. Other lighting lights often have hazardous materials
such as lead and mercury which require special handling and waste
management procedures which have both economic and environmental costs.

3. Social Factors:
 Home upgrades: Due to innovation of smart lights, people now prefer to
upgrade their homes by installing such lights to make it more convenient to
use.
 Add More with Interior Design: One can go the extra level by using the
smart lights to decorate the home. We can change the décor and appearance
of our rooms at the drop of a hat with smart lighting. For family gatherings,
parties, and hangouts with the friends, smart lighting makes setting the mood
even easier.
 Social status: By installing such lights, social status of people as well as
their use in high-end hotels improves the overall status of a country.
 Easy to use: Instead of physically operating the switches of lights, smart
lights can be operated from the mobile app from anywhere at anytime.
 Wallet friendly: Smart lights have a simple install and the price is easier on
the wallet than other smart home upgrades. These lights can be six times
more energy efficient than incandescent lighting.
 Personalized Scenes for Every Occasion: Gives even more control of our
rooms with smart lighting “scenes.” These scenes can change the colors
subtly but still have an impact. If one is big into reading, changing the
shading of the light could ease eye strain.

4. Technological Factors:

 Bluetooth Connectivity: Bluetooth Smart Lights typically use Bluetooth 4.0

or 5.0 for their wireless connection, allowing them to be controlled from a
smartphone or other compatible device. Bluetooth Smart Lights use
Bluetooth technology to connect to your smartphone or tablet. This allows
you to control the lights from anywhere in the home, as long as you have a
Bluetooth-enabled device.

 LED Lighting: LED lighting is the most common type of lighting used in
Bluetooth Smart Lights. LED lighting is energy efficient and has a long
lifespan, reducing the need for frequent bulb replacements.

9
MARKETING MANAGEMENT

 Smart Home Integration: Bluetooth Smart Lights are often compatible

with popular smart home systems such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
This allows users to control their Bluetooth Smart Lights using voice
commands.

 Scheduling and Automation: Many Bluetooth Smart Lights allow users to

set schedules and automate their lighting, turning lights on and off at certain
times or based on certain conditions.

 Colour Changing Capability: Some Bluetooth Smart Lights are capable of

changing colours, allowing users to customize the lighting in their home.

 Automation: Bluetooth Smart Lights come with a range of automation

options. This includes setting timers, scheduling scenes, and adjusting the
colour and brightness of the lights.
 Energy Efficiency: The lights are designed to be energy-efficient, helping to
reduce your energy bills. As they use LED technology, they consume less
energy than traditional lighting solutions.

 Easy Installation: Installing Bluetooth Smart Lights is relatively simple. As

they use a standard E27 screw fitting, they can be installed in any compatible
light fitting.

 Durability: The lights are designed to last for up to 25,000 hours, making
them more durable than traditional lights. This makes them a cost-effective
lighting solution for your home.

5.

Environmental Factors:

11
MARKETING MANAGEMENT

 Positive impact of smart lights on the environment and health

Smart lights consume less energy, have a longer lifespan, and use safer
materials than any other bulb out there.
 The low energy consumption of Smart Bulb/Lighting
When it comes to energy consumption, smart lights reign supreme. Traditional
incandescent lights use up a lot of energy, losing most of it by producing heat in
fact. A whopping 90% of the energy required to use incandescent lights is lost
through heat! That means only 10% goes towards actually producing light.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have a substantially lower heat loss factor,
which is part of the reason why they use around 75% less energy than a
traditional incandescent bulb to create the same amount of light. Instead of
using electricity to heat a filament like incandescent, CFLs send a bolt of
electricity through a chamber to excite the mercury molecules within, the
byproduct of which is light.

While CFLs are pretty efficient in how they use energy, the LEDs in smart
lights can actually boast an 80% improvement over incandescent energy
consumption. This is partially due to the fact that LEDs have a solid-state
structure, meaning there aren’t really any moving parts to it. A current is simply
sent through a semi-conductor which forces electrons to jump from one place to
another, a process which results in the creation of light.
These energy savings will not only help reduce your monthly electric bill,
they’ll also contribute to cutting back on global energy production, making our
footprint on this Earth just a little bit smaller. In 2012 alone, for example, U.S.
consumers saved over $675 million by switching to LEDs and switching over
completely to LEDs by 2032 could save our country over $250 billion in energy
costs alone!

12

 The amazing lifespan of Smart Lights

An incredibly long lifespan is the second most environmentally beneficial
characteristic of smart lights. Typical incandescent lights will generally last
about 1,000 hours, or around one-third of a year for a bulb used around 6 hours
a day. CFLs provide a much longer lifetime of around 10,000 hours. That’s
about 4 ½ years at that same usage rate.
LEDs on the other hand, offer an amazing 25,000 hours! That means if you left
an LED light on for 6 hours a day, it would last almost 11 ½ years, far
outperforming CFLs and especially incandescent lights.
The benefits of a long bulb life are pretty easy to see. Using one LED for the
same amount of time about 33 incandescents would last means we don’t have to
produce as many lights. That means less landfill use, less production costs, and
less transportation consumption which of course means cleaner air.

 A mercury free lighting choice

Another important point to note about the environmental impacts of smart lights
is the fact that they don’t contain the same harmful materials that other lights,
namely CFLs, contain.
As we pointed out before, fluorescent lights use the peculiar way the element
mercury interacts with electricity to create light. Mercury, as many people
know, can have some pretty nasty effects on our health. And as mercury
poisoning is most common when it’s inhaled, cleaning up broken fluorescent
lights immediately is especially important.
In fact, fluorescent lights have special disposal procedures to accommodate for
this potentially deadly compound. While the amount of mercury in modern day
CFLs is much lower than it used to be, exposure to this element should be as
limited as possible.

13
MARKETING MANAGEMENT

LEDs on the other hand don’t contain any mercury. And although it’s still
important to be mindful of a broken smart bulb, you won’t have to worry about
breathing in any mercury while you clean up.

 Negative impact of smart lights on the environment and health

 LED Lights are Increasing Global Light Pollution and Harming the
Environment
Artificial light disturbs the natural light/dark cycle of the world. Animals and
plants evolved over millennia, responding to the natural daily transition from
dark to light and back to dark again. As a result, humans and plants have
developed circadian rhythms that are in tune with this cycle.
LEDs disturb this cycle. They introduce a source of light in the hours of
darkness. From 2012 to 2016, the world brightened by 2% annually. This is
concerning for scientists, as light pollution has significant implications for the
health of ecosystems.
Introducing light during the night disturbs the evolved life-sustaining behaviors
of animals, such as reproduction, nourishment, sleep, and protection from
predators. Studies have shown that light pollution negatively impacts bats,
birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and plants.
Light pollution is known to impact the flight paths of migratory birds as it
confuses their flight trajectories. This can lead to crashes and fatalities. Another
example is of the effect of light pollution on sea turtles. These animals live in
the ocean but hatch on the beach at night. Once hatched, the turtles navigate
toward the sea by detecting the horizon's light over the ocean. Artificial lights,
such as LEDs, confuse them, often drawing them in the wrong direction. As a
result, millions of turtle hatchlings die each year.

 Melatonin Production is Suppressed by LEDs, Causing Sleep

Disturbance

14
MARKETING MANAGEMENT

In the darkness, the mammalian pineal gland is prompted to produce melatonin,

the hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle, helping us transition from
wakefulness to sleep. Artificial light disturbs melatonin production, with LEDs
being a particularly harmful disrupter.
LEDs are used in screens and electronic devices such as televisions, laptops,
tablets and smartphones. These devices are increasingly used by the population,
increasing our exposure to LED light. Exposure to this artificial light at night
can cause sleep problems due to its impact on melatonin. Specific LED colors
can be more harmful than others.
Blue LED light, commonly used in displays (such as laptops and phones), has a
greater impact on melatonin suppression than red LED light. Studies have
shown that blue LED light significantly impacts melatonin suppression, which
prevents sleepiness. Blue light is the type of light produced by natural sunlight;
therefore, it is associated with wakefulness. It boosts our attention, reaction
times, and mood. However, at night, it tricks our bodies into believing we
should stay awake rather than rest.
It is problematic that blue LEDs have become part of our everyday lives as they
are incorporated into our much-depended devices. Red lights, however, have
been shown to encourage melatonin production and have been increasingly
included in products such as alarm clocks and night lights.

6. Legal Factors:

 Licenses and registrations required

Any entrepreneur starting a business needs good knowledge about the
licenses and registrations required to start a Bluetooth LED manufacturing
unit. The essential ones for the Bluetooth LED manufacturing business are
summed up below
 Company Registration: The business can be started as a proprietorship,
partnership, LLP or Limited Liability Partnership, an LLC, or a Private
Limited Company. Depending on the ownership choice, the documentation
may involve registering the firm with an Ownership document, Partnership
Deed, LLP/LLC documentation etc., at the Registrar of Companies (ROC).
 GST registration is mandatory: Municipal Authority Trade License is
required for all kinds of trading activity and must be obtained from the
relevant municipal authorities.
 Pollution Control Board NOC (No Objection Certificate) is essential as the
Bluetooth LED manufacturing industry causes pollution and uses certain
hazardous materials that are not friendly to the environment.
 Trade Mark is another procedure that protects your brand name and
business branding. Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises or
MSME Udyog registration & Aadhar Certification is also required. Before
applying for the MSME Certification, you must register with the MSME
Ministry and obtain the 12-digit MSME Udyog Aadhar Number for your
LED manufacturing industry. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Certification
is required mandatorily for specific LED items notified by the DG of Foreign
Trade and is not a country dependent procedure.
