INTRODUCTION

The Ignacian Formation Program was originally conceived in the 16th

Ordinary General Chapter in 1996. This aims to provide a more solid
foundation on the spirituality of Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo which
is a “spirituality of Marian radical openness to the will of God that
impels us to a humble and courageous, generous and creative service to
the Church especially the poor.” It is the spirituality of the humble
servant of the Lord (CD 1996,5).

The original Ignacian Formation Program (IFP) Modules were first

implemented in 1997 for the youth and Lay Partners; and in 2008 for
Grade School, High School and College. These modules were revised as
mandated by the 20th Ordinary General Chapter. (Documents CD 2016,
p.35, 1.3). The revision was to align the modules to the current social
context of our students and personnel, to enable them to uphold their
personal integrity rooted in Christian morality and discipleship, and to
exercise their strong sense of accountability at the level of their
responsibility following the examples of Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu
Santo.

This current year 2021, the Education Ministry Commission implements

the revised IFP Modules 2021 for Grade 3 to Grade 12 and for
Personnel. The topics and contents of this revised IFP Modules 2021 are
based from the original IFP Modules of 1997 and most of its contents
were copied/lifted from the book entitled “Mother Ignacia del Espiritu
Santo, A Lamp to Our Path” by S. Ma. Anicia B. Co, RVM; and some were
taken from “Behold the Handmaid of the Lord!” by S. Ma. Rita Ferraris,
RVM; “A Valiant Woman: Thoughts and Reflections on the Legacy of
Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo”; Novena Prayer to Mother Ignacia del
Espiritu; and from other RVM Documents.

The IFP Modules 2021 for students (Grades 3 to 12) are designed as a
series of ten modules with four (4) sessions to be given by year level.
The time frame for each session is one (1) hour, however if the school
allows, the facilitator may extend the time to have more activities,
reflection and faith sharing. The modules focus on the family
background, vocation, mission, qualities, virtues and values of Mother
Ignacia and its relevance to the present reality in our society and
concerns of our students.

MODULE 5 - SESSION 1

INTRODUCTION (Preliminaries)
Opening Activity/Prayer:

Opening Song: PERSONS ARE GIFTS (SAP # 424)

Heavenly Father, you willed that we come to life through the

mystery and miracle of love in the human family. We thank
you for the gift of our family that nurtures our becoming and
enables us to grow to maturity. Open our minds and hearts to
appreciate the good things that have come to us through our
family.

Help our families to face the challenges of life by caring and

supporting each other. Strengthen us with your grace so that
we can spread the Good News in our community as a family
witnessing to faith, love and service. Amen.

Focus: MOTHER IGNACIA’S ‘FAMILY BACKGROUND

Motivation: Data Gathering

 Gather information about the students’ family
background. Ask the students to tell about their family
members at least three generations: their parent, their
grandparents and their great grandparents.
 Possible questions:
1. What are their names, age, etc.?
2. What are the characteristics or habits of your family
members?
3. What are your family values, beliefs and traditions?

IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 5

APK (Prior Knowledge):
 How do you take your role in the family?
 Who are you closest to?
 What is/was your relationship like with?
 Is there anyone else who is very close to the family?
 What are the influences of your family in your
development as a person?

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)

Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the students
will be able to know the origin of Mother Ignacia,
identify her family roots and describe her parent’s
traits, values/skills, religion and practices.
Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the
students will be able to imitate in their daily life the
values and attributes of Mother Ignacia as influenced
by her parents.

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)

A. Concept
Ignacia del Espiritu Santo was born of a Chinese father,
Jusepe Iuco, who was from Amoy, China, and a Filipino
mother, Maria Jeronima of Binondo, Manila. She was
born when the Philippines was almost a century old as
Spanish colony.

She was reared by loving and affluent parents. As a child,

she could have everything she had wanted especially
education, but women during their time were not treated
as persons with equal opportunity to improve their social
standing. But this did not hinder from obtaining an
education which gave her lifetime learning. Her home
became her school and her parents were her teachers.
She was taught by them through examples. She had her
IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 6
share of work both in their house and in their business.
She imbibed her father's hard work, humility, patience,
industry, frugality, resourcefulness and endurance along
with her mother's strong faith in God, care for the family,
modesty, courage and simplicity

B. Broadened Concept:
 What values of Mother Ignacia as a child or daughter
do you desire to imbibe?
 What are the traits and values of Mother Ignacia’s
parent that were passed on to her?
 Are these values evident in the families today?
 How will the family orientations of Mother Ignacia
influence the Filipino parents today in forming their
children to be God-fearing?

ACTIVITIES:
 Let the students draw the family tree of Mother Ignacia.
 Legend
- Male (grandfather, father)

- Female (grandmother, mother, sister)

 Let them identify the inherited values, common practices,

family strengths and brokenness of Mother Ignacia
 Let the student draw his/her own family tree and include
the values, religion and practices which influence them.

CHARITY-INSPIRED CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES

Values Integration: Excellence/ Respect and obedience
 How do show your love to your parents like what
Mother Ignacia did?

Social Integration: Cultural Differences

IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 7
 Mother Ignacia grew up in a mixed-race family and it was
not always easy. Her parents surely faced challenges
raising her in two different cultures.
 Like Mother Ignacia’s origin, there are many families
today living in different cultures and races, in reality there
are inevitably daily frictions and sometimes major
conflicts, difference of opinions and opposing ideas. How
can these be overcome by families of today?

INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME

Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
 How can Mother Ignacia’s love for her family inspire you
to fill your family with love?

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)

Mother Ignacia came from two cultures-the Filipino and the
Chinese. She inherited innocence, simplicity, obedience,
respect and modesty, sense of religiosity and resiliency from
her yndia (Filipina) mother. The idea of self-help, the spirit of
industry, frugality and business acumen, were inherited from
her father Jusepe Iuco, a Chinese. Aside from inheriting the
physical features of our parents, we are consciously or
unconsciously shaped by the values of our parents and
relatives. Mother Ignacia is no exception. She too was
formed and nurtured by her parent’s values, attributes,
practices and religion.

NOTEWORHTY APPLICATION OF INSIGHTS GAINED

 The students will write a commitment to exemplify
Mother Ignacia’s positive values and attributes as
influenced by her parents.

APK (Prior Knowledge):

What did your parents tell you about your baptism?
Who attended your baptism?
Why is the Sacrament of Baptism important?
How is it initiated?

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)

Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the students
will be able to describe the role of Mother Igancia’s
family in her growth as a Christian.

Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the

students will be able to draw inspiration from Mother
Ignacia’s way of relating with God and practice it in
their life.

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)

C. Concept
“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the
gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and
the door which gives access to the other sacraments.
Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as
sons of God; we become members of Christ, are
incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her
mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration
through water in the word.” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church (CCC) #1213)

“At her baptism, Ignacia’s parents, Jusepe Iuco, a Sangley,

and Maria Jeronima, an yndia, decided to name their
daughter IGNACIA DEL ESPIRITU SANTO. They thought it
was a fitting name for one who was born on the feastday
of St. Ignatius of Antioch. In affixing “del Espiritu Santo” to

IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 10

her name, they could be expressing their own devotion to
the Holy Spirit. Little did they realize that she would live up
to her name. In a way, her name sealed her destiny. The
name “Ignacia” comes from the Latin ignis, which means
“fire.” She would be the “fire of the Holy Spirit” on a native
soil. She would bring the fire of the Holy Spirit to a
conquered race by bearing witness to God’s gracious
action in the midst of a colonized people.

From her mother, Ignacia learned the rudiments of faith,

prayer and Christian piety. Ignacia must have grown in her
knowledge of the faith through the Doctrina Cristiana, the
catechism book which was printed in Tagalog in 1593 and
was intended for native pupils. There was also the
Doctrina Cristiana in Chinese printed in the same year.
Ignacia’s father must have learned about the Christian
faith from this Chinese catechism.

The young Ignacia followed the practices of piety common

during her time: praying the rosary and other devotions,
joining processions, assisting at Mass, receiving Holy
Communion, going to confession.” (A Lamp to Our Path, pp.
8 & 12)

D. Broadened Concept:
 How did the young Ignacia’s parents nurture her faith
life?
 How do you describe her growing up in a religious
environment? How did her community in Binondo
help her to grow in faith and in knowledge of God?
 What values of Mother Ignacia and her parents do you
want to imbibe? Why?
 How did Mother Ignacia live out her Christian life?

Mother Ignacia learned about the Christian faith from her

parents. She experienced unity, love, and support in the
family. Her values could not have been manifested by her
had they not been ingrained in her childhood and
IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 11
teenage years under her parents’ supervision. It is the
same with other individuals. Values would not
spontaneously surface where they are not previously
acquired and witnessed at one time or another in one’s
life.

ACTIVITIES:
A. How does Mother Ignacia’s living out of her Christian life
inspire you to nurture your relationship with God? You may
express your answer through any of the following:

 Essay (with a minimum of 200 words)

 Poster
 Digital Art
 Song Composition
 Spoken Poetry

B. Dyad: Get a partner and share your insights/reflections on

the following questions:

 Where am I now in my spiritual journey?

 How often do I talk to God?
 How often do I listen to what He has to say to me?
 What particular value of Mother Ignacia do I want to
imitate as I continue to desire and serve God in my life?

End your sharing with a short prayer of thanksgiving.

CHARITY-INSPIRED CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES

Values Integration: Faith /Strong faith in God and
Communion
How will you cultivate the values of faith and unity that
you learned from your family?

IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 12

Social Integration: Spirituality in Families
Family serves as a basic unit of a society, wherein
individuals learn the art of living in fellowship with one
another. Different families define spirituality in different
ways, but whatever a family’s specific beliefs, spiritual
values provide them with direction and unity.

INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME

Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
Each family is a “domestic church,” a small example of a
place where two or three are gathered in Christ’s name
to manifest Christ’s presence. To foster spirituality within
our own family, we may want to examine our own values
and ask ourselves these questions:

 What particular values in my family that I want to

nourish?
 How well do my daily activities mirror my values?
 What values of Mother Ignacia and her parents
do I want to imbibe? Why?
 Are these values shown in my family?

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)

A Christian’s virtuous life is honed in the home. Mother
Ignacia was formed and nurtured by her parent’s values,
attributes, practices and religion. She experienced unity,
love and support in the family. The home is the seedbed
of God’s love as witnessed by Mother Ignacia’s family.
One’s eyes are opened to the witnessing of the members
of one’s family. Values are caught and taught by the
family members to the young ones.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)
Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the students
will be able to own and appreciate the gift of their
family and that of Mother Ignacia.

Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the

students will be able to validate family solidarity as a
basis for community building and design an activity
plan for it.

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)

A. Concept
Family ties are strengthened when family members share
happy events like births, achievements, a thriving family
business. On the other hand, family crises test its
solidarity.

Even before Mother Ignacia was born, there was already

a shadow of conflict in her life. Chinese pirates
threatened to invade Manila. An anti-Chinese riot
resulted in the death of a great number of Chinese. There
was a threat to expel the Chinese from Manila. Ignacia’s
parents were deeply troubled. The experience of having
and losing her brother and sister left Ignacia and her
parents grief-stricken. The conflict between the Church
and the State and the prejudice against the natives
(yndios and yndias) were realities the family came to
grips with. But the examples of an unwavering faith in
God’s providence, perseverance, courage, patience and
discipline set by Jusepe and Maria Jeronima in coming to
terms with these situations would mold the character and
shape the future and the attitude towards life and society

of the young Ignacia. (Adapted from A Lamp to our Path,
pp.8-14)

B. Broadened Concept:
 How do you describe Mother Ignacia’s parents and her
relationship with them?
 What examples did Jusepe and Maria Jeronima
manifest that formed Mother Ignacia as a person?
 How did Mother Ignacia’s parents influence the
foundational community?

Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
 What do you like best about Mother Ignacia’s parents?

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)

Our family is God’s special gift to each of us. In order to keep
the love alive in our home, family relationships need to be
constantly nourished. One’s moral life is first and foremost
formed in the home. Mother Ignacia was shaped and
nurtured by her parents’ values, attributes, practices and
religion. Her experience of unity, love and support in the
family which truly inspired her to become the person God
called her to be aided her and her beatas in their journey.

MODULE 5 - SESSION 4

INTRODUCTION (Preliminaries)
Opening Activity/Prayer:
“Teach My Heart” is a song-prayer produced by Jesuit
Communications. The lyrics have been taken from the
famous prayer of St. Anselm of Canterbury. The prayer
talks about “seeking God in our desire and desiring God in
our seeking.” Take it and pray it with much fervor.

PRAYER OF ST. ANSELM OF CANTERBURY

O Lord, my God,
Teach my heart where and how to seek You.
Teach my heart where and how to find You.
You are my God and my Lord and I’ve never seen You.
You’ve made me and remade me
And bestowed on me all the good things I have.
And still I do not know You.
I have not done that for which I was made.
O Lord, my God,
Teach my heart where and how to seek You.
Teach my heart where and how to find You,
For I cannot see You unless You teach me,
Or find You unless You show Yourself to me.
Let me seek You in my desire.
Let me desire You in my seeking.
Let me find You by my loving You now.
Let me love You when I find You.
Teach me, Lord. Teach my heart where
and how to find You. Amen.

Focus: THE EUCHARISTIC LIFE OF MOTHER IGNACIA

Motivation:
Students are asked to recall their First Holy Communion
and to list down 3 - 5 preparations they did prior to the
said event. 2-3 students are asked to share their answers
in the class.
APK (Prior Knowledge):
What comes to your mind when you hear the word
‘Eucharist’? What is the relevance of the Eucharist in your
life?

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)

Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the students
will be able to appreciate Mother Ignacia’s devotion
to the Eucharist as her expression of gratitude to
God.

Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the

students will be able to learn from Mother Ignacia’s
love for the Eucharist as the essence of a life lived in
communion with God and practice it in their life.

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)

A. Concept
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation
in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a
participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of
bread is one, we though many, are one body, we all
partake of the one loaf.
- 1 Cor 12:16-18

S. Ma. Anicia Co expounds the Eucharistic spirituality of

Mother Ignacia in two senses:

IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 20

1. Mother Ignacia was devoted to the Eucharist, the
sacrament of God’s love the clearest expression of
His self-giving unto death. In fact, M. Ignacia and
her companions got the name Beatas de la
Compañia de Jesus because of her frequent
attendance at Mass and reception of the
sacraments at the Church of St. Ignatius.

2. She lived the basic meaning of Eucharist in her life.

Eucharist comes from the Greek word eucharistein
which means ‘to give thanks.’ Mother Ignacia lived
in the spirit of gratitude toward God whom she
experienced as a generous and loving Father. See
1726 Rule 1, 48 and III,1.

B. Broadened Concept:
 How did the Eucharist influence the life of Mother
Ignacia and her companions?
 In what way/s did Mother Ignacia enflesh the
meaning of the Eucharist in her life?

A. Make an acrostic to describe Mother Ignacia’s love for
the Eucharist using the word “Eucharist”.

CHARITY-INSPIRED CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES

Values Integration: Faith/ Strong faith in God, Prophetic
Witness to the Gospel, and Communion
 How will you show your love for the Eucharist as a
way of holiness?
 In the Eucharist, God shows His love for us. How then
will you share this love to others as a sign of
communion with God’s people?

Social Integration:
 How do you parents influence you in giving
importance to the Eucharistic celebration?
 In your observation, are there more families
attending Eucharistic celebrations in our society
today?

INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME

Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
 As a Christian and an Ignacian Marian, how have I
grown in terms of my relationship with God?
 How often do I pray?
 To what extent do I value the true essence of the
Eucharist in my life?
 In what ways do I nourish my faith in God?

IFP SY 2021 - Module 5: Mother Ignacia’s Family - Page 22

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)
Mother Ignacia bore witness to a life lived in the presence of
God. Her devotion to and love for the Eucharist truly
reflected her intimacy with Jesus. The Eucharist was the fuel
which strengthened her and her beatas in their day-to-day
living. In our own way, we too are invited to do the same—to
nourish our relationship with God in the Sacrament of the
Eucharist and to constantly become more aware of his loving
presence in our lives.

NOTEWORHTY APPLICATION OF INSIGHTS GAINED

The students are to make a pledge of commitment expressing
their desire to really value the meaning of the Eucharist in
their life.
