INTRODUCTION

The Ignacian Formation Program was originally conceived in the 16th

Ordinary General Chapter in 1996. This aims to provide a more solid
foundation on the spirituality of Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo which
is a “spirituality of Marian radical openness to the will of God that
impels us to a humble and courageous, generous and creative service to
the Church especially the poor.” It is the spirituality of the humble
servant of the Lord (CD 1996,5).

The original Ignacian Formation Program (IFP) Modules were first

implemented in 1997 for the youth and Lay Partners; and in 2008 for
Grade School, High School and College. These modules were revised as
mandated by the 20th Ordinary General Chapter. (Documents CD 2016,
p.35, 1.3). The revision was to align the modules to the current social
context of our students and personnel, to enable them to uphold their
personal integrity rooted in Christian morality and discipleship, and to
exercise their strong sense of accountability at the level of their
responsibility following the examples of Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu
Santo.

This current year 2021, the Education Ministry Commission implements

the revised IFP Modules 2021 for Grade 3 to Grade 12 and for
Personnel. The topics and contents of this revised IFP Modules 2021 are
based from the original IFP Modules of 1997 and most of its contents
were copied/lifted from the book entitled “Mother Ignacia del Espiritu
Santo, A Lamp to Our Path” by S. Ma. Anicia B. Co, RVM; and some were
taken from “Behold the Handmaid of the Lord!” by S. Ma. Rita Ferraris,
RVM; “A Valiant Woman: Thoughts and Reflections on the Legacy of
Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo”; Novena Prayer to Mother Ignacia del
Espiritu; and from other RVM Documents.

The IFP Modules 2021 for students (Grades 3 to 12) are designed as a
series of ten modules with four (4) sessions to be given by year level.
The time frame for each session is one (1) hour, however if the school
allows, the facilitator may extend the time to have more activities,
reflection and faith sharing. The modules focus on the family
background, vocation, mission, qualities, virtues and values of Mother
Ignacia and its relevance to the present reality in our society and
concerns of our students.

Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the
students will be able to appreciate Mo. Ignacia’s
response to God’s call by living out and sharing the
fruits of her decisions, actions and virtues to others.

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)

A. Concept
When Ignacia was 21 years old, her parents wanted her
to marry. Heeding a call deep within but not wanting to
disappoint her parents, Ignacia sought counsel from Fr.
Paul Klein, a Jesuit priest from Bohemia who arrived in
Manila in 1682. The priest gave her the Spiritual Exercises
of St. Ignatius. After this period of solitude and prayer,
"Ignacia was inspired by God to remain in the service of
the Divine Majesty and she resolved to live by the sweat
of her face.” She left home and brought with her only a
needle and a pair of scissors. She started to live alone in
the house located at the back of the Jesuit College of
Manila. Her life of prayer and labor attracted yndias who
also felt called to the religious life but could not be
admitted into the existing congregation at that time. M.
Ignacia accepted these women into her company and the
first community was born. They became known as the
Beatas de la Compañia de Jesus because they frequently
received the sacraments at the Church of St. Ignatius,
performed many acts of devotion there and had the
Jesuit fathers for their spiritual directors and confessors.

M. Ignacia centered her life on the suffering Christ and

tried to imitate him through a life of service and humility.
She prayed earnestly to God and performed penances to
move God to have mercy on them. Her spirituality of
humble service was expressed in her capacity to forgive,
to bear wrongs patiently and to correct with gentleness
and meekness. This spirituality was manifested in peace
and harmony in the community, mutual love and union of

care of the Blessed Mother.

B. Broadened Concept:
 Is Mother Ignacia’s decision to follow God’s call still
relevant in today’s world?
 How did Mother Ignacia attract women of her time to
follow her?
 How can Mother Ignacia’s response to the will of God
be our inspiration in following God’s will for us
especially in our world today?

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)

Life is a series of calls and responses. The more we are
attentive to the call, the more we become responsive in our
decisions and actions. Like Mo. Ignacia, she listened and
prayed hard to be able to know the call of God for her. She
weighed things over before she made a decision. Then she
acted on it. God is calling you and me to respond to His call
IFP SY 2021 - Module 6: Mother Ignacia’s Vocation - Page 8
from the time we wake up to the time we sleep at night. God
constantly calls and reveals His will through persons and
events. If we pray always, we will be able to hear and answer
God’s call. And if this becomes our habit, then we will be able
to make the right decision to fulfill our wishes like Mo.
Ignacia.

MODULE 6 - SESSION 2

INTRODUCTION (Preliminaries)
Opening Activity/Prayer:

Father, we lift up to you all the young men and women to

grow spiritually in You and with You amid school, family and
social pressures. You often called great men and women in
their teens to follow you into their destinies. From David
being crowned King as a teen, to Esther saving her people as
a young adult, to Mary being bestowed the honor of carrying
Your Son, Jesus. As a teen, You often have a tender spot in
calling youth to their journeys. We pray that during this time
between childhood and adulthood that they would come to
know You more spiritually. That it would not merely be
religion in the sense of rules to be followed, but a deeply
rooted relationship where they come to know the character
and heart of God. We pray that in these years, they embrace
You in their hearts, and that seedling of faith will grow into
gardens of splendor in Your Kingdom, full of fruit and life. We
pray against attacks of the enemy or influences that are
seeking to corrupt them. We speak against such spirits in
Jesus ‘name, for as You said in Matthew 18 that those who
seek to lead a child into sin come in offense against You. We
pray for your Spirit protecting and leading them into true
communion with You, growing in truth and Spirit. In Jesus’
name. Amen.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)

Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the students
will be able to describe the way M. Ignacia lived her
prayer life and demonstrate it in their life.

Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the

students will be able to imitate M. Ignacia’s way of
relating with God as they examine their life of prayer.

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)

C. Concept
Ignacia, born from her parents, Jusepe Iuco (Chinese) and
Maria Jeronima (Filipina), was the only child who survived
from the four children. She was exposed at a young age in
the Christian life of prayer. She was always with her
parents attending Mass. She prayed the rosary with them
and observed Church rituals and practices. She never
missed any of these. Because of her upbringing, her
prayer life was deepened. As she grew older, she became
eager to become even closer to God by considering to
enter religious life.

At the crossroad of her life: to have a family of her own or

to respond to the call of God, she did not rush her
decision. She went into discernment by asking advice
from Fr. Kelin, a Jesuit priest. Instead of giving an advice,
she was encouraged to make a retreat. She put all her
IFP SY 2021 - Module 6: Mother Ignacia’s Vocation - Page 11
concerns into prayer that led her to remain “in the
service of the Divine Majesty.”

Her Christian life was a life of prayer. She did not only
recite her prayers, but she made them alive by forgiving
those who did wrong to her and thanking God for the
blessings received by the whole community of beatas by
sharing them to the poor. She earned her living “by the
sweat of her brow.” She raised the consciousness of
women of their own worth and dignity as women created
in God’s image and likeness. We are called to do the
same, in our own way.

D. Broadened Concept:
 How did Ignacia live her Christian life?
 Is the example of Mother Ignacia’s life of prayer
significant in our world today? Why?
 With the pandemic (COVID19), natural calamities and
other man-made conflicts and disasters around the
world, do you still have time to pray like M. Ignacia?
What do you constantly pray for: your family, our
country and the world?

ACTIVITIES:
The teacher prepares pictures of persons who are victims of
typhoon, earthquake, fire, flood, sickness, suffering,
government leaders, children, parents, and people needing
help. By group, the pupils choose a picture to pray through
the intercession of Mother Ignacia.

Social Integration:
Months/years since the beginning of the spread of the
COVID19 pandemic in December 2019, do you see how
God works in the world, in our country and in your

prayers alive?

INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME

Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
 If Mother Ignacia is in front of you now, what will you

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)

Ignacia’s prayer life is not only lip service. Hers is a prayer put
into life. Her attendance and observation of Church’
activities, practices and culture deepened her faith. Through
prayers, she learned to discern well during the time that she
needed to decide on difficult challenges of her life. She let
God worked with and in her. God is her stronghold, her
strength and the source of Christian life.

Closing Prayer: Pope Francis’ Five Finger Prayer
Using the fingers on your hand, start with the thumb and
pray these intentions in this order:

1. The thumb is closest finger to you. Start praying for

those who are closest to you. They are the persons
easiest to remember. To pray for our dear ones is a
“Sweet Obligation.”

2. The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach
you, instruct you and heal you. They need the support
and wisdom to show direction to others. Always keep
them in your prayers.

3. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our

leaders, the governors and those who have authority.
They need God’s guidance.

4. The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even though it may

surprise you, it is our weakest finger. It should remind
us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those plagued by
problems. They need your prayers.

5. And finally, we have our smallest finger, the smallest

finger of all. You pinkie should remind You to pray for
yourself. When you are done praying for the other four
groups, you will be able to see your own needs but in
the proper perspective, and also you will be able to
pray for your own needs in a better way.

IFP SY 2021 - Module 6: Mother Ignacia’s Vocation - Page 15

NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)
A. Concept
M. Ignacia opened her heart not only to other native
women but also to other women of different
nationalities. She was very much willing to open to form a
community. She did not consider only herself, her needs
and interests, she looked into the needs and interests of
her fellow beatas. In responding to the call to the
community life, Ignacia was learning the art of loving.

The call to community meant pooling their resources

together. They defined themselves as a community of
religious bound by the vows of poverty, chastity and
obedience. their way of life did not pass unnoticed. Their
frequent attendance at Mass and reception of the
sacraments in the Church of St. Ignatius earned for them
the name “Beatas de la Compania de Jesus.” They lived as
an independent community of religious native women.
They grew according to their pace. They had to work for
their own living and most often suffered from lack of food
and other necessities of life.

The endurance of M. Ignacia and her beatas could only be

attributed to the grace of God to their lives. Their very
poverty taught them the reality of following the poor and
humble Christ. M. Ignacia persevered in this call. She was
faithful to her community in joys and sorrows. Her life of
commitment to the Lord was now being expressed as a
life of commitment to the community.

B. Broadened Concept:

Is the community life of Mother Ignacia and the Beatas

still significant and worthy of emulation in our society
today? Why?

IFP SY 2021 - Module 6: Mother Ignacia’s Vocation - Page 19
NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)
A. Concept
Mother Ignacia gave us an example of holiness by her
total self-dedication to the service of God and unselfish
love for her fellow men and women. Her holiness gave
her the courage to answer God’s call in the manner God
wanted it. Through her deep faith and trust in God and
her commitment to the person and teachings of our Lord
Jesus Christ, she lived out the greatest commandments of
love: love of God and neighbor.

Her services brought unity and change in her community

and in her country. She was like Christ who served the
poor and the needy with tender love and care. Now,
Mother Ignacia is calling us to follow our Lord Jesus Christ
and our Blessed Virgin Mary just as she did. Anyone of us
here can do what she did to put Christ at the center of
our life.

B. Broadened Concept:
1. What makes her Christ-like?
2. From the virtues, which helped M. Ignacia lived a holy
life, which virtue/s do you think you need to possess in
order to respond to her invitation? How are you going
to practice it?
3. In today’s world, which virtue do you think need to be
strengthened by young men and women like you?
Why?

ACTIVITIES:

JOLLYVIRTUE:
The world sometimes is like a fastfood chain. There are
foods that can be ordered and served at a very short time

but there are sets of menus that take time to be served.
Comparing this, we have virtues that are innate and are
built in because our parents and our culture taught us.
But there are virtues which need time to learn and
practice at a longer time because we do not practice
them. Below are situations which need your response.
Identify the virtue/s that you will practice based on your
